Glad I got to test it for free rather than paying
To be fair, I'm not sure if this product is no good or if I received a defective item. I followed the heating instructions to the letter (including the type of power source), but the product doesn't heat up. The instructions indicate it can "take up to 10 minutes to reach maximum heat;" I had it plugged into a running vehicle for 25 minutes and the only warmth was from transferred body heat. (I contacted REI about this issue so I could write a fair review and the first response asked if i used the proper power source, which I had already stated I did; the next response asked me for a photo of the defect. I indicated it wasn't possible for me to take a photo of the temperature of the blanket. One week later, I received no further response, so I'm writing this review in order to comply with product testing rules). Now, there are things I can say about this blanket without it having worked properly and I must say I don't think I would spend the money on it based on my total experience. Positive attributes: The fabric is very nice and seems durable enough for a blanket. The seams appear to be good enough, though I can't definitively say they would be lasting (I only used it 3 times). It works pretty well as a blanket on it's own - at least over top of a sleeping bag. There is a clasp so you can kind of wear the blanket like a cape, which is a neat feature if you want your arms free and still want to be cozy. There is a pocket sewn on the blanket to store the power cord, which is really nice - especially when you're packing a lot of items and want to stay organized. There is a stuff sack for the blanket as well, which could be nice, but that brings me to... Negative attributes: This blanket is a nightmare to fold. The lovely fabric is silky smooth so 1) if you try to fold it and just set it somewhere, it won't stay folded; 2) if you're trying to fold/roll it to fit into it's stuff sack, you better have a large area - at least a little bit bigger than the blanket to wrestle it; 3) it's almost impossible to get the blanket small enough (even without having to fight the smooth material) to fit in the stuff sack. I twice attempted successfully to get the blanket in the stuff sack, with extreme difficulty and frustration. On the third attempt I didn't have a large enough area (read roof top camper is not large enough area) save for the cold, wet ground so I gave up and crammed it in the back of my car. Additionally, when you are trying to fold/roll/compress it, the heating elements within the blanket are certainly stressed and on my last try made some sounds that were not good - had I not already known the blanket didn't work before this process I would have been convinced it wouldn't have worked after this. Lastly, it appears (and I'm not sure since it never worked) that in order to keep it very well heated you need to be plugged into a power source. This seriously limits the usefulness of the item. The manual indicates the blanket needs to be plugged into a 12v power source, but that you shouldn't plug it into your vehicle when it's off as it could quickly drain the battery. well, perhaps if it's heated to capacity you can unplug it and it will hold its heat for a time, but the manual doesn't indicate how long that could be - to be fair, the manual itself can't account for your body temp, ambient air temp and other variables. In any case, I'm curious - assuming mine is defective and it's not just a subpar product - if it would hold heat for any useful amount of time, say around a campsite. If not, it again seems like not a very useful product if you need to be tethered to a running vehicle or a battery source that isn't very mobile - or if you have a mobile one, having to tote it around. Overall I think it's a great concept, but I think it needs to go back to the R&D stage.
Nice heated blanket for car camping
I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This is a very nice quality blanket that can also be worn as a cape. It is moderately heavy like a weighted blanket. We used it to sleep in the back of our Honda Element and it covered two adults. There are very specific battery requirements. It worked with our car battery and we brought a jumper in case the battery drained, but we did not need to use the heat setting long enough to drain the car battery. This blanket can only be spot cleaned which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. We travel with a dog so things that cannot be washed are not my favorite. It fits easily into the provided stuff sack. I am always cold so I am excited to have this!! There are several important instructions so be sure to read the booklet before using. It cannot be put inside a sleeping bag or folded over, but it does say you can fold it over for a few minutes to let it warm up.
Perfect Weight, Added Warmth
The weight of this blanket is perfect! I love that it has a warm suede-like bottom, so it won't slip when I reposition. I'm also happy that there is a zippered storage pouch and a velcro wrap for the cord. I'm not a fan of the red light on the car adapter, but that can be covered with a small piece of electrical tape. I'm 5'2" and the cape feature works pretty well for me, the back doesn't touch the ground. When I set the blanket to 80, it was drawing 46 watts to warm up, then it dropped to 35 watts to maintain temperature (but that is heavily dependent upon ambient temperature).
Just when you thought you couldn't warm up...
This is the near-perfect car-adventure blanket. I say near perfect because the cord can feel a little wonky, but overall this thing does the trick and the awesome thing is you dont even have to be on an adventure! When you are getting your adventure on and that cold snap comes, or you knew it was going to be cold going into the adventure the topside heated blanket has you covered and gets you warmed up fast. Just took the kids on a hike in the mountains and it got cold and wet fast. When we got back to the car we fired up the blanket and within min my kids were warmed up and ready for the next adventure. Dont sleep on this blanket... nap under it.
This will extend my Alaska camping season!
Buck for buck, this blanket is possibly the most economically sound purchase I've made out of all the gear I own. I have a teardrop camper with a queen size bed inside and was looking for a way to extend my camping season (as you can imagine, it's pretty short in Alaska). I've found it with the Ignik 12V blanket. I went camping at Denali NP this past weekend where temps were well below freezing - and over 3 inches of snow fell overnight. I powered this with a Rockpals 500W power station that I put on a shelf at the foot of the bed area. I turned the blanket on to "preheat" the bed about two hours before I planned on sleeping. It was at 100% with the timer set for five hours. When I went to bed - the bed was SO WARM and the temperature inside the camper had actually risen about three degrees. You could feel the heat of the blanket through the blankets over it. I went to sleep warm and snuggly in just a pair of knit pants and a tank top (as opposed to the previous weekend at Denali where I slept in baselayers, fleece pants, and a fleece top!). I woke up about 6 AM for a call of nature - and while the blanket had been off for several hours, the mattress itself was actually still very warm. It used about 18% of the 500W battery running on 100% for five hours. The only parts of the mattress that were cold were the very edges that touched the sides of the camper - it's a NuCamp and very well insulated, but still, it was about 18F overnight. The interior of the camper stayed above freezing, where I've seen it dip below freezing before (and this is the coldest I've been in this year so far). I'm sure it's because I was warmer overall. The blanket now comes with a 12V car adapter, and while I had to put it "upside down" (cord at my feet instead of by my head) so the cord was closest to the shelf with my battery on it, it didn't change the heating I received. I think I prefer it that way as it prevents getting tangled in the cord. I tested it inside when I first received it to ensure it was functional - and I think many are only doing this and aren't taking it outside in the elements. When you have it inside, you don't get the full experience of what it's capable of in the cold. Trust me - this baby cooks. :) I admit I was skeptical about it, and I was fully prepared to don my usual sleeping attire. I think I would have toasted myself in it. After learning my lesson on "off brands" with two bad rounds of highly rated but not larger brand powered coolers (and it became Dometic for the win!), I chose to just go with a name brand 12V blanket - and am THRILLED that I did.
Warm All Year Round
The Ignik Topside Heated Blanket is a perfect 4 season car camping blanket. In the warmer months of the year the blanket unplugged will keep you perfectly warm at high altitudes. When the weather changes plug in the blanket and face any weather conditions. The cable pocket is an extremely nice feature and really adds to the versitility of the blanket. The blue green color much better looking in person.
No more cold nights!
I purchased this blanket right when temps in the mountains dropped to around 30 degrees and have to say I was more than pleasantly surprised by how warm this thing kept me and my dog. I plugged it into a 12v battery bank and set it at 7 and fell asleep. About an hour later, I woke up and was absolutely roasting with the temperature outside the tent at about 34 degrees. I had to turn the blanket off because it heated up the entire tent. I think a setting of 3 or 4 would have kept me warm. The blanket itself is really well constructed and I like the sewn in pocket that holds the cord and 12v plug. Nice job, Ignik!
Great blanket!
Great electric blanket. It heats up primarily in the middle of the blanket and provides just the right amount of warmth. The use of the blanket is somewhat limited because of the 12v power supply. You can use it in your car or plug it into a portable battery bank. Perfect for those who get chilly on long car rides.
Keeps you cozy on the go!
At first I was a little concerned the blanket was too stiff to be comfortable but I was pleasantly surprised by how cozy it was and it has a handy little toggle to close the blanket around you like a cape! The blanket heats up fairly quickly and retains the heat quite well after turning it off. I plan to use it camping with my portable power unit to keep cozy and warm while at the beach for sunset or pre heat it so it can keep the dogs warm on the drive home from snowy hiking.
Great Blanket for Kids and Adults
Very nice blanket, it get’s toasty warm on about 40 watts of 12V power. We purchased for a recent camping trip to keep our kiddo warm, but I’d probably get one for myself also. The heating area is a strip about a third of the width of the blanket, down the middle. I’d say this is best for one person, not more. It has a pocket to store the cord/temperature controller and the blanket works well to reduce power use once the temperature is achieved. Comes with a nice travel bag. It’s a little pricey, but I’d recommend this over an expensive tent heater that draws more power and doesn’t get as toasty where is counts.
