We have had our Advanced Elements tandem for approx. 5 years. We have paddled in all kinds of conditions, from absolute flat calm to open ocean swell. It has been in high Sierra lakes where we fish from it. It has been in San Francisco, San Pablo, and Tomales bays. Most recently we used it to paddle up Big river and paddled the sea caves at Van Damme state beach in heavy seas. The hull material has been tested on barnacles, rocks, and mud with mystery objects. We have sustained no damage other than discoloration from bay mud. We went the inflatable route for storage and transportation reasons. We can shove it in a Prius, or in the bed of a Tacoma. No need for roof racks. Then it stores on a shelf in the garage along with the rest of the gear. I have some tips for potential purchaser’s and new users. 1. If you purchased your kayak with the standard floor as we did, you need the backbone kit. The best solution though is to order with or upgrade to the Drop-Stich floor. We found the standard floor too flexible. The drop-stich floor makes a world of difference especially for fishing. 2. Advanced Elements makes a rudder kit that helps turning immensely. Tomales bay usually has a cross wind that we found makes the kayak weathervane into the wind. I made a number of modifications to the pedal assembly. Finally building an aluminum pedal box that snaps in place. We use a rear seat steering position unlike the kit configuration. 3. To answer HuniBadger, yes it sure looks like the pump comes with the kit. False advertising to me REI needs to correct that. When we bought ours, Advanced Elements was recommending an electric pump, that did not have the correct fittings to fill their boat! I have found that after you inflate any new thing you need to give it time to stretch and settle in. Then re-set all the pressures. The only problem we have had is putting it in lakes with ice floating. The air in the kayak contracts causing a need to top off. The double action pump is what we use, and works well. 4. We have the top deck and spray skirts, but find we rarely use them even in moderately marginal weather.

Deflated first ride at PSI recommended

Product images on website include a pump. Everything on leading up to launch after purchase had me believing I now owned a pump. Got all the way to the launch to setup and there was no pump. Finally got somebody with an electric pump to help: Next, the floor of this kayak is total trash and completely deflated an 2 hours into the trip. It’s complete junk and I kept to inflation suggestion of l 1psi. The rest of the boat also lost pressure by the time we got back to shore making it extremely difficult to move at all. If I wasn’t paddling, I wasn’t moving, full stop. The first voyage ruined one of the days of our 4th of July holiday. It was really disappointing because people spoke so highly of the product. I would not recommend this boat.

Great performer in a variety of conditions

I'm leaving a review to counteract the negative reviews. I bought this kayak in 2020 to get out in the intracoastal waterway (and the Atlantic Ocean!) around Wilmington, NC while everything was closed during pandemic lockdown, and it's still going strong. The amount of freedom I felt having an affordable and capable watercraft during the pandemic, paddling next to pods of dolphins, was absolutely a saving grace during that period. I've since used this thing in mountain lakes, the Potomac river, etc. I agree that the stock floor is a little too flexible, so I upgraded to the dropstitch floor after a couple years, and wow did it make a difference in comfort, tracking, and ease of carrying. But it was still enjoyable before that -- not everything needs to be the most optimized thing in the world to be fun. Yeah I wish it were lighter, but it's extremely durable -- I've taken it in some sketchy terrain, run over way too many sharp rocks, and it's holding up fine. It's currently 35% off, and I'd buy it all over again if I didn't already have it, even though I hate spending money.

Love this Kayak

We have had this kayak 3 years. It is easy to carry in it's bag. Pretty simple to inflate the multiple chambers and to deflate and repack. You need two people to carry once inflated. It is very stable and easy to steer. It has bungee cords that you can attach too. The seats are pretty comfortable. Easy to paddle and glides nicely. We fish from it with telescoping poles. Have not had any problems with it.

Positive Enthusiastic Review with some Hints

I watched the You Tube reviews and my experience eclipsed those reviews The AE kayak handled some light chop and still maintained speed. The comfort level is luxurious and supportive. For the nonobservant purchaser (me) notice that the pump has an inflate and deflate valve Do not connect the hose to the deflate if you (me) want to inflate. The hose will kink up and you (me) will bang your (my) head against the wall in frustration. Assembly / Disassembly is labeled and my hard shell kayak companions were not unreasonably delayed. On deflation, purge, then use the pump (on deflate) to suck out the last few pockets of air You (I) will thank yourself I will take it out again and again

Versatile, easy to use, solid performer

This is an excellent boat. It assembles and inflates quickly and is easy to pack up. Performance on the water is very good, especially considering that it is an inflatable. It is not as good as a true sea kayak in terms of rigidity and tracking, but the tradeoff is worth it given how much easier this boat is to transport and store. I have found this boat to be well made and durable. It is well suited for a wide range of conditions, including the ocean. As a bit of background, I am 6'4" and this boat fits me, in tandem or single mode.

Very impressive

Only taken on one paddle so far, but huge improvement in the Intex it replaces. Inflated to the correct pressures it is reasonably rigid and can clearly carry bags of weight when paddled solo. It tracks straight and true and is only barely affected by the stiff breeze we returned in. It passed its test with fitting colours and the next run out will be with the kids and more luggage - it's not a rigid boat but it's better than an inflatable has any rights to be.

Suitable for indoor pools

Was looking forward to an inflatable kayak I could travel with. Unfortunately after one afternoon out, I will be returning the product. The kayak folds like a greasy slice of pizza over the slightest ripples. I obviously was not expecting the rigidity of a plastic/carbon/fiberglass boat, but this was way too flimsy. Beyond that, the kayak had tons of drag and really sloppy handling but I guess that is to be expected given the construction and overall design.

Terrible proprietary valve design, avoid

A decent kayak but the inflation mechanism is somewhat proprietary and is a PIA. Look somewhere else. it has a spring loaded mechanism and you need an adapter to use most inflators unless you only use the mechanical pump. That alone is good enough reason not to buy. Also one of mine leaks even in the "inflate" position.
