I used these shoes on a 3 mile hike through Muir Woods. It had rained heavily the day before so the ground was wet and muddy. First off these shoes fit very comfortably and they are an exact fit, I wear a size 10 and these fit perfectly. The padding on the insole was very comfortable, there was enough cushioning to not make my heels sore. The grip on the shoes was great, I walked over wet rocks, small streams, about 100 steps and mud and not once did I loose my footing. The waterproof part of the shoe kept my feet dry and warm during the hike. There were instances where my feet went into the water and none came in. The mud also seemed to not stick to the shoe and fell off as I started walking. Overall these are a great shoe to go hiking in a variety of terrain. I would have liked if they came in a wider variety of colors, but the evergreen color was to my liking. These are my first pair of Oboz and I am greatly impressed by the quality of the shoe.
The Oboze Katabatic are a great shoe for wet weather. I received these just after a 4” snow fall and wore them exclusively for a week in the weather conditions. They performed excellent on the snowy local hiking trails and kept my feet both dry and to my surprise warm given the winter weather conditions. I was also pleasantly surprised by there appearance. They look sharp enough to work as my business casual urban commuter shoe in wet snowy weather. Regarding the fit, they fit true to size but I would recommend those with wide feet sizing up a half size. I have wide feet and had some pinching the first three days until the shoes were well broken in. I’ve put about 18 city miles and 7 hiking miles on these shoes in snowy conditions and they still look new despite the salt. The treads have not broken in that time span so I’m optimistic they will provide many miles of wear in both wet and dry conditions
These shoes are comfortable and provide great support while hiking. However I did notice when going on the first few hikes with these, that they tended to pull down my socks after a while, so I would not recommend wearing these with any type of ankle socks. With anything higher than that, they did however work fine. Another issue I had was with the laces not staying tied for most of my first hike in these. The material they're made of is a bit stiff out of the box so it doesn't tie too well. However, it does seem that after a few more hikes and some wear they're starting to get better. These shoes seem to have a slightly longer break in period than I'm used to with my other hiking shoes. Hopefully after a few more hikes they will start to get better.
Owned for 7 months and the sole is coming detached. And the upper has a “crack” where his foot flexes.
I have worn many different brands of hiking shoe, and these are easily the most comfortable hiking shoe I have ever worn. Low cut, waterproof hikers have been my go-to choice for three season backpacking since thru-hiking the AT several years ago. The Katabatic would be a trusted choice for my next one! First impressions are positive with a beautiful subdued green color and nice black and tan accents. They are light, with thicker material in high wear areas. The build quality is impeccable with beautiful seamless fabric transitions. Upon first wear, the cushiony footbed and roomy heel were most noticeable. I was nervous if the roomy heel would lead to increased rubbing, but this fear quickly wore off after just a couple of days of use. Compared to my current go-to hikers, the flex of the sole isn’t as “snappy” and the outer feels less protective and durable, but these are much lighter. I wear 10.5 or 11 for most shoes and the size 10.5s fit me perfectly. After several weeks of heavy use, these have held up incredibly well. These were comfortable in snowy hikes in single digit temperatures, but these were equally comfortable during long days at work on my feet! I was grateful that they did not make my feet hot, unlike many waterproof shoes, and the footbed seemed to help reduce foot fatigue compared with many other low hikers I have worn. I seriously doubt this is my last pair of Oboz after my experience with the Katabatics!
Wore these during the last two 4-6 East coast snowstorms, they kept my feet dry and warm even with ankle deep snow and bottom of my pants wet. They are comfortable and very waterproof even under the snow. Only downside is they are looser in the back than the toe box, so do need to be tied snugly to keep them from slipping. Good shoes, can't wait to try them in the mud in the spring.
I've mostly been hiking on dry and frozen trails since it's been a fairly dry winter in Minnesota but it finally snowed last week so I finally had a chance to test out the waterproofing. Overall very comfortable show from heel to toe. Hiking boots are usually either too loose in the back or too tight in the front on me, so nice to get a snug fit all around. Lots of a cushion underneath without loosing too much ground feel. More open lugs grip nicely while not getting packed. Both times going out on mid-to-tight packed snow and never experienced the sole "icing over". For a low-cut boot, heel/ankle is nice and snug and has done a good job of keeping snow/ice/water from coming in over the top w due to the gusseted tongue. Waterproofing did a good job of keeping the shoe dry even when the synthetic fabric would saturate (which took a while but dried out very quickly even in 28 F. Looking forward to trying this in the shoulder seasons on flat muddy trails. If you're usually between sizes I'd go with the smaller one in this.
Ive been using these for about a year now and they have not held up. The tread is almost worn off in a few spots, torn through in another, and the parts that are glued on are peeling off. The water proofing lasted a few months and despite what the company says, there was a break in period. I wont be buying a second pair.
Wow, I have really like my pair of Oboz Waterproof Hiking Shoes. I'm an avid hiker and trail runner in the rainy Pacific Northwest, and I'm usually a bit skeptical about any products that claim to be "waterproof." But I got these hiking shoes during the wet winter season, so I got to put them to the test in all kinds of conditions. I loved wearing them during a recent ice/snow storm we had -- the traction on the tread is great! And the waterproof feature really did keep my feet dry while I was walking through snow and slush. I also took these for several hikes on muddy and wet trails, and I literally stood in a deep puddle to see if water leaked in (and it did not). My socks and feet stayed completely dry on these hikes, which was awesome! In addition to being waterproof and resistant to the elements, I think the fit is perfect (right to size) and they feel comfortable on long hikes -- I love the support provided by the insole. They seem perfect for winter season hiking, although maybe a bit too think and insulated for summer hiking in warmer weather. Overall, these are my new go-to hiking shoes this winter. I look forward to getting out in all of the wet and wild weather that we get here in the PNW, and not worrying about my feet being wet or cold.
I didn't purchase these for hiking, so my review may not be pertinent. I got these for my work which is often outdoors in the soggy falls/winters of Western WA. Second day wearing them today and put em through the paces, they did the job well. I find Oboz to be comfortable out of the box, these no exceptions, and they provided excellent traction today on slick leaf covered surfaces, a steep composite roof, and my ladder while keeping my feet bone dry and comfortable, not the case for the rest of me despite wearing good raingear. I can't speak for how they'd do on a ten mile hike, but for my needs they're off to great start
