Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".
PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.
TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

New favorite shorts!
Love these shorts! I got two pairs recently and have been wearing them for running and the gym. They're SO lightweight and at the same time very flattering and comfortable. Great for humid mid-Atlantic swamp summer runs. Love the pockets -- the back waist pocket fits my iPhone mini and the zip keeps it secure. I'm 5'8" about 150lbs and got the medium in both pink and yellow and found sizing to be consistent. Agree with the other comment that the rise is really nice -- the waist hits just at or under my belly button which I prefer. They dry pretty quick -- I hand wash after in the shower after each run and the next morning they're dry enough to wear again. Historically I've shied away from some REI brand gear but these shorts are so nice that I will definitely be checking out more REI brand stuff in the future.
So nice I already put the other color in my cart
I really like these shorts, they're so light I barely feel like I'm wearing them, while at the same time the liner feels super secure and offers good coverage as well, I definitely don't worry about it moving around. I also appreciate the rise, which to me was a bit more mid-rise (grazing just below my belly button) than a lot of other running shorts I've tried. I much prefer these to patagonia's strider shorts for that reason. As for the gobble test, I usually don't have an issue with shorts riding up my thighs so I sadly can't speak to that! I like the pockets, the zip back pocket easily fits an ID/credit card and house key, as for the two side pockets on the waist band, I wouldn't feel as comfortable putting those things in there, they would be perfect for like a gu or something similar, since the tops are unsecured. I'm a pretty true size small and thats what size I'm wearing here and I'm very happy with the way they fit. 5'3", 120 lbs, 26 in waist and 36 in hips.
Love These Shorts... but fair warning...
I'm a solid size 8 and bought these in-store (after trying them on) in size medium, in the cosmic magenta color, and they fit and feel like a dream! They are soft, lightweight, pack well, and dry quickly. I love them so much that I bought 2 more pair on-line; one in black, and one in deep carmine. The black ones fit exactly the same as the magenta ones, but the deep carmine ones fit like a size small. I could tell the difference the minute I held them up. I could get by with them but would rather they fit like the others. Great shorts, just know that the sizing may be inconsistent.
good shorts, weird sizing
I get the sense that REI hasn't really perfected running shorts the way that other, running-specific brands have. I'm 5'3, 120 lbs, and initially bought these in a small. The shorts themselves were fine, but the briefs were too tight. I exchanged for a medium in the 5 inch shorts (they didn't have 3 inch in store) and found that while those briefs fit, the crotch part of the shorts was too low and chafed when I ran. I finally settled on the 3 inch shorts in medium, which for whatever reason seem to fit better in the crotch than the 5 inch, tho I have to cinch the waist real tight. I'm going to stick with the current pair even though the fit isn't perfect.
Great shorts super comfy! Even at 7mo pregnant!
These shorts were an awesome fit even at 7 months pregnant. They were super comfy not restricting at all. Definitely a nice short to get out in the Florida spring! I would definitely recommend these so nice to fit shorts that fit well and look good!
Perfect running shorts
I bought these shorts at the beginning of the summer and have worn them weekly. I love the lightweight grid fabric, they keep me cool and don’t show obvious sweat marks like other colored shorts. I have shorter legs and the length doesn’t feel inappropriate for me. For precautions, I usually apply anti-chaffing stick before I run, but I have not encountered any chaffing even without it. The seams are smooth and comfortable. As a type 1 diabetic, my favorite part about these shorts are the small side pockets on the waist. My insulin pump fits securely in them while I run or move about. I have used the back pocket to hold my iPhone, but I prefer to have it in my external running vest or waist pouch. I am 5-5 and 130lbs, I bought these in a size small and they fit perfect.
so cling no ride no bunch! fantastic shorts
The REI co-op running shorts are as good if not better than other name brand shorts in this style. they are so comfortable, don't ride up, don't bunch, don't cling, and most importantly, don't cause wedgies! The waistband is incredibly comfortable and the zipper pocket in the back is a good size for carrying a car key and gu and your drivers license. The fabric wicks away moisture. The 3" shorts are shorter than what I normally run in, but overall great coverage. I'm 5'3", 120lbs and I have a small that fit perfectly.
Lightweight shorts, ran a bit small for me
These shorts are overall pretty nice. Love the green color and the material is comfortable and soft. They are very lightweight and airy. I did find that they run smaller than other REI-brand clothing (I am normally an XS in REI-brand with room to spare - the XS in these shorts was a bit tight and I would’ve preferred a small).
Inconsistent sizing
I absolutely love these shorts, but I’d recommend trying them on in store as the fit is super inconsistent.
Phone pocket a titch small
Good running shorts. One star off because I bought them for the back phone pocket, and it only works without my phone case. I have a Galaxy S22, so not an oversized phone. My other minor issue is that the price of REI branded items is creeping up but hey, if the quality is there I guess that's fair.
