Love It! Numbers Matter
I don’t leave home (on bike rides) without it. Pairs seamlessly with all my other sensors and I can easily change screens with the swipe of a finger. The overall size of the 1040 being bigger than my old 520 & 530 make it quick to glimpse a field reading on the display. My wife loves the Live Track notification on her iPhone when I set out on a pre-dawn ride. I use Garmin Connected and have found the metrics useful, especially my Power Training Zones and Pedaling Dynamics (Ralley Pedals have proven useful for rehabbing a back injury and regaining RT/LT balance.
Good update from Edge 1030 plus
My 1030 plus decided took on water on a wet ride and had to be replaced. I got the Edge 1040 thinking it would be very similar and did not expect much difference. I was pleasantly surprised at the improvements in the unit. First thing I noticed were the icons on the data screens that make it easier to find things like elevation, grade, gears, and next turn direction (see first two screen shots). Probably the best improvement is in the Climb Pro screen (screen shot 3). Climbs are automatically detected based on the road you are riding (previously climbs just showed up on preloaded routes). The climb pro screen now shows you the map along with the graph. Includes the grade you are currently at and remaining distance, grade and altitude gain left in the climb. Nice feature! I like how the meter pairs with Di2 shifters as seen on the last screen shot.
Great features and TOUCH SCREEN !
I love my new Garmin 1040. I see it well in sun and shade, looks good on my bike and my stats are improving. I have downloaded maps,so easy to follow with turn-by-turn directions, PLUS the screen is nice and big. No more squinting.
Perfect combination with Varia 715 and UT800 Light
I wanted to get cheap bike computer. However I’ve seen reviews of Edge 530/830 then1040 on youtube. There was some considerable points. Finally I decided to get 1040. No regrets. It’s almost perfect. Looking also great. Performance is surely perfect with Varia 715 radar. Recently I added UT800 for night riding, It is also perfect. Garmin is just Garmin.
The Perfect Bicyle Computer
This is the most important device on my bike. It records my results, keeps me informed about my other Garmin and Shimano components and provides safety by alerting my of vehicles and other cyclist approaching from behind.
Great Bike computer.
Average mileage per year around 3000 the Garmin computer help me do my training have a lot of information very easy to use
Simple, this product works great
Excellent battery life, best upgrade on the aluminum back. For me Garmin is an user friendly product. Love it
Nice Device Still work in progress
Bought this 3 weeks ago and enjoy using it for my daily rides. I don`t use all the training offerings because I am not into the ultra-physical aspects this device is designed to do. I need it for riding in the woods where maps are kind of nice and to know where you are on the side of a mountain. Easy to trust 95% of the time. Only issue I have is that this units does not shutdown smoothly every time. It does like to hang with the power display showing. Garmin says this was fixed with last and latest firmware, but nope, it's not. Still, I would not hesitate to purchase because all of the good functions out way this annoying firmware bug.
I'm probably not optimally using it (yet)
I got this to help with my riding and especially MTB adventures (pre-garmin specific MTB). I like the size to see maps with my aging eyes. I really like the climbpro feature (although could be optimized to the top of some of the common climbs). I like the touchscreen more than I thought I would and how it helps download courses/routes to help me train. I am not sure how reliable the jump/airtime features are, but the noise can be somewhat motivating, and the beep warnings provide anticipation of sharper turns, although annoy my kids when riding with them...I feel I'm still learning and refining my use/data screens to get what I really want/need/enjoy!
WOW!!!
I LOVE the battery life - it's nothing short of amazing. The stamina/potential with the estimated distance features are a real game changer for me as I ride a lot of 100k to 200k rides and this helps my pacing immeasurably. The screen size is awesome (I'm 66). The 1040 paired beautifully with my PM, speed and HR sensors. This baby has been rock solid. This is my third Edge (prev. being 705 and Edge Explore). I've loved them both but this is unbelievable. To get the most out of this, do yourself a favor and get some type of power meter. It's not just the data it collects, but the way it distills that data into useful advice that rocks. This baby just WORKS.
