Decent backup to a Leatherman, well made, bulky.

2 things first: (1) This is NOT a Leatherman. I knew this wouldn't replace my Leatherman. With that in mind this Gerber Suspension NXT *is* well constructed with quality materials and decent workmanship. (2) This was on-sale as a kit and included a standard locking Gerber knife. It was WAY cheaper than my Leatherman Wave (well, any of my Leatherman products). So I purchased this as an office tool that I could leave at the office for the errant loose screw or bolt, opening boxes, etc. It's not something I'd take camping or on a project - for that I rely on my Leatherman (no, I don't take my Wave backpacking, just base camping; Swiss Army Rambler is for backpacking). The Gerber Suspension NXT tool is bulkier than I expected, but it's also a little lighter(193g, 6.8oz) than my preferred Leatherman Wave (242g, 8.5oz). I have small hands but the tool is acceptable for basic use with a little dexterity. The spring assist pliers can make it a little challenging as there are times when I need the pliers to stay clamped on to something simple. Keep in mind I don't expect them to be clamped on like "vise grip pliers," but just enough to lightly hold a "thing" in place for a moment - the spring assist pops those babies open in a heartbeat, including when simply trying to rearrange your grip on the plier handles. The one-handed knife blade was easier to actuate than I expected and while the unlocking mechanism is a little stiff and takes both sides of the slider lock to disable, I actually think this is a good thing for safety so it isn't TOO easy to accidentally close on you. The knife blade is smaller than my other multi-tools but in my use case this doesn't really affect me too much. This would bother me OUTSIDE the office, hence Leatherman. The phillips and flat head screwdrivers are functional and lock in to place nicely. I've found they're just as easy to work with as on other multi-tools. They are not interchangeable, but they also don't get lost that way either. The scissors, while short, small and seem like an afterthought, are surprisingly efficient with a really good spring lever (actually better spring recovery than my Leatherman). The Gerber Paraframe I Folding Knife: In true Gerber fashion this is a very nice, well made blade with a good solid feel, not overly heavy, no frills; just a good basic pocket knife with clip. I like that this is a straight edge knife - no serrations. The lock is solid and has a very satisfying snap to it's lock. Easy to open with the thumb nubs and easy to close. I do feel that this is primarily a right-handed knife for closing, but with a little dexterity can be closed with your left, if you're careful. Overall a good deal for the price and what you get. Again, don't expect a Leatherman experience, but it's a pretty decent backup and if you lose it - it's not quite as painful.

I bought this as I had recently lost my previous multitool and the knife bundle seemed like a good deal. I've had no complaints with the separate knife and it came as expected. However the black paint finish on the multitool leaves a lot to be desired. The coating on parts of the frame and many of the tools is rough and uneven and doesn't have the slight gloss finish as other sections do. Additionally, the hinge of the pliers and scissors had way too much lubricant, so much that it gets on your hands and pockets. I'll have to completely de-assemble it to properly clean it and remove the excess oil. Fortunately, all the tools seem to function well enough for a cheap multitool, but the locking features on each side requires two hands to unlock which is a bit annoying. Overall, I'm satisfied with the functionality but expected better quality from Gerber regarding the finish of the multitool and the excess joint lubrication.

A decent multitool that gets in its own way

I lost my last multi-tool and needed a replacement. For the Suspension NXT Multi-tool, out of the box, way too much lubricating oil applied to the hinges and blades. The paint is inconsistent with each part of the tools and are different shades of black and texture. The hinge of the pliers are loose and flex. Using the screwdriver, I can tell anything more than wood screws or too much torque will not be good for the tool. The locks keep the tools in place when opened, but when closed, I was able to slightly bump the tools open. Not safe at all, considering the tools opening is where the blade is located. The side tools need two hands to open, and two hands to close. The belt clip is a decent length compared the the folding knife and allows the multi-tool to fit in my pocket securely. As for the folding knife, the thumb studs are too close to the pivot, and make opening the knife difficult to open one handed. I have to rest my index finger on the hilt and push downward to open the knife one handed. Closing the knife is also a two handed affair, as the thumb lock does not have a large enough lip to allow one handed close. The belt clip needs to be just a bit longer, as it tends to slip out on thinner material, compared to the longer clip on the multi-tool. A decent offering for the price, but maybe look elsewhere for a lifetime tool

A decent multi-tool that gets in the way of itself

I lost my other brand name multi-tool and picked this up as a replacement. Out of the packaging, I knew this was not as solid and reliable as my previous multi-tool. The locking mechanism does not lock the tools in place as well as it should. I had inadvertently bumped the side of the knife against my palm while using, and the tools with the blade side just slide open. The black paint finish is rough out the box. Way too much lubricant on the blades and hinge of the pliers. The tools do not have the raw metal showing like the ad photos show, and opening and closing the tools are rough from open to close. The body has too much flex and when torquing the screw driver, it definitely is not up for more rugged work. For the folding pocket knife, opening the blade one handed is difficult, and I have to rest my index finger on the front hilt edge. The thumb stud is too close to the pivot of the blade to allow for a smooth opening. The two washers between the body and the blade are made of plastic and are already wearing down. There is just not enough thumb grip to allow one handed closing of the knife. It's a two handed affair. It's a good enough multi-tool, but for a lifetime tool, save up and spend a bit more.

Good knife, cheap multi-tool.

Good value for the money. The stamped metal parts of the multi-tool body are a bit sharp so I took a metal file to them to help round them over/smooth them out. It feels a bit flimsy, but that's ok, I bought it to be stored in the trunk of my car for emergencies. I wouldn't use this daily as I feel it wouldn't hold up to heavy use.
