My new favorite shell
First impression, this is a very attractive and well made jacket. The Habitat color is fantastic in person. It pairs with all colors, but I especially like the contrast with black pants. I'm usually more of a color person but this shade may just change my mind. Plus, when I wore this shell hiking, my friends immediately complimented me (always a nice way to start the day 😉). The fit is perfect, both flattering and comfortable. It has plenty of room in the shoulders and chest, even with a puffy underneath. For reference, North Face and Patagonia jackets tend to be tight on my shoulders/chest or hips, but I had no issues with this shell. I am curvy, and wear 14/XL pants, L-XL tops, 38D bust, and have a 19in torso. Snow has been slow coming this year, so I haven't gotten the shell out on the slopes yet, but it won me over already while hiking and clearing snow. When clearing snow in freezing rain, the Andessa kept me completely dry. I love the pullstring hood and visor adjuster. It allowed easy fine-tuning, and the built in visor did a great job keeping my glasses from getting coated without restricting my vision. (Clever design there.) Bonus, the shell dried quickly once back inside. My hike (White Mountains NH) was 14°-24°F, and I was comfortable at the summit and on the descent wearing the Andessa with just a tank and long sleeve tech tee underneath. (I do run a tad warm.) The inner lining was soft and toasty. The zippers were smooth, and easy to operate without removing my gloves. It was breezy on the ridge line, but I didn't feel the wind at all. Best of all, the cut was comfortable with all my movements. I felt no restrictions at all. The length over my butt was perfect, even with a long torso. I had no problem with backdrafts or when sitting to put my spikes on. My only complaint with this shell is that it doesn't have a zippered chest pocket for my phone. I like easy access for quick shots, and I don't find the side pockets as convenient (though they are zippered and each has plenty of room for my S22 Ultra plus a hat or pair of gloves). The large inner pockets fit my phone, but are better suited for snacks since there are no zippers. The zippered RFID pocket on the sleeve and the inner zippered key pocket are nice touches. For a hiking shell I would choose a model with pit zips, but this will be a fantastic ski shell and will double duty nicely as a multisport shell too. My new favorite for sketchy weather! In the picture with the shovel, I'm wearing a puffy underneath. For the rest just a tank top and long sleeve tech tee.
Performed well in sleet/freezing rain
I haven't had the opportunity to wear this skiing/snowboarding or in a snow storm yet, so this review is based on wearing in freezing rain/sleet. Starting with the color (habitat): the eggshell color is pleasing and (as I have found with other Arc'teryx gear) somewhat chic, but seems less practical for visibility in snowy conditions because of the low contrast. That being said, when I wore it (at night walking the dog in sleet/rain) it was actually great because I was highly visible as compared to the general surroundings. I was able to fit a wool sweater and a hooded down jacket under this shell (which is not insulated) without any issues. I think it's sized appropriately/tts given that other warm layers are meant to be worn underneath. The jacket covered my backside and essentially stopped at the top of my legs (ymmv if you have a very long torso). The hood is designed for a helmet under it, but I found that it also works without because it's fully adjustable. The hood did a great job of keep the rain off my face. The only improvement I would make is adding a double zipper so the jacket can be unzipped from the bottom, for easier access to the interior pocket. Otherwise, I think this is a high quality shell that worked incredibly well in cold, wet conditions.
Great shell for any adventure
Arc'teryx has always been a go to brand for me, and this shell is no different. It's been great for rainy days while camping and hiking, and looking forward to using it in the snow soon. I wear a size 2/4, and the small had enough room for a thin puffer or other layer under it. The sleeves are nice and long and there are plenty of pockets. The color is also nice...a pretty shade of grey that goes with pretty much anything. Overall a great shell for any adventure.
Love it!!
Great for skiing, only downside is no reverse zip!
Beautiful jacket with great fit
Love this jacket! Comfortable and great- looking. Pockets are well placed. Good in rain and wind, and layers well for warmth with the addition of either my fleece or down hoody, perfect in Whistler! And tI like it very much while hiking too - an all-season jacket.
No pit zips in gortex shell?
I have this jacket. Wouldn’t purchase again until they add pit zips. It needs it for the proper use they suggest. The fabric needs to be able to be vented if you do any activity in it.
Great look and excellent performance
I tested the Jacket on three walks/hikes and two bike rides which ranged in length from 30 min to 4 hours. For one longer bike ride, rain was predicted, but it only drizzled slightly. One hour-long walk had significant rain, but I used an umbrella, because I was carrying a back-pack and I walked in the city. The jacket has an excellent fit (size M for my 5’4” 110 pounds frame). I like the tested size that allowed me to layer enough clothing for enough warmth. Arms are a bit long, but the Velcro closure addresses that issue. The hood with the two-level adjustments took a bit of exploring to figure it out but work very well after some exploring. The Gore-Tex material was perfect for the wet testing. I was totally dry. I would have preferred to have zippers under the arms allowing for venting. This may be an issue on strenuous bike rides. The inside and outside pockets are great, and I especially liked the small zipper pocket on the left sleeve – very handy for change or a key. I am very happy about the fit, the material, and the overall design and would recommend this jacket as a great shell. Additionally, I like the looks.
