Can Handle Lots of Pulling!
I used this leash in combination with a harness walking my 12 year old Alaskan Malamute. The hibiscus pink color popped well with her black coating and against the white snow of the Adirondacks. I really liked the handle design, as it accommodated wearing large mittens to walk my dog easily, and the 5 foot range was adequate for giving her the space she wanted to explore. I also liked the clip design where it went onto her harness ring, and was relatively easy to clip and unclip. I was able to run with her using this leash and she responded well to any tugs I made. Quality product and would look at getting other Ruffwear for my dog!
I love the clip and energizing color!
Thoughtful details make it easy to get out the door for a W-A-L-K. As soon as I say the word, he wants to get out! The carabiner-style clip is easy to attach and best of all it doesn't get jammed with sand. As we often walk beaches, this is a hassle with leashes that have a conventional clip that stick open from sandy grit. Is it ok to like what makes this leash easy not to use? It folds to fit in my pocket when I take my dog off-leash. Other designs are too bulky to fit or don't bend as well. The gripping texture of the material inside the handle is subtle but when my dog lunged toward a rabbit while I was loosely holding the leash, it stayed in my hand. Reflective detail would give peace of mind for night walks but his harness has reflection so I'm less concerned about that. With an adult rescue who's been with me for 2 months, frequent walks have helped him acclimate and explore his new home. We happily use this leash multiple times a day.
Simple Leash
This leash is minimal and light weight. It has enough features to be more useful than a standard lead without adding too much. The clip is a swiveling carabiner with a lock which is practical. There’s also a loop at the end so you can tighten the length when passing others on the trail. The handle is slightly padded which is nice; it’s just enough that it isn’t too heavy. I’ve owned other Ruffwear products and this seems in line with their quality. If you are looking for a simple leash for the trail this is a great choice!
Great light weight leash!
I have been testing this leash for a few weeks. As others have stated one thing that would make it better would be to have the loop closer to the middle to avoid having to bend all the way to the bottom to grab it. When it first arrived i was surprised at how light weight the leash is. This turned out to be a great thing for my elderly dog. Where other leashes get heavy for her this one is perfect! I highly recommend for others with elderly dogs with mobility issues. Another nice feature is the carabiner clip. It has a clasp that would be handy for bigger dogs who pull to avoid it unclipping. I have not needed this feature as my dog doesn't pull
Light and Strong Leash!
I was really happy to test out this leash over the past several weeks. Overall, I was happy with the leash. It is a bit thinner webbing than our previous leashes and light in the hand but still seems strong with our 40lb terrier trying to take our arms off chasing a rabbit. The clip mechanism is unique and worked well once I discovered you could just push the plastic piece on the spring down to release and you can even do this easily with gloves on. My only wish for an update would be to add an additional quick grab loop above the first; the current would work well for a larger dog but we have to bend down and stoop to reach it with our shorter pup.
Best Leash EVER
To the low ratings out there, maybe there was a bad batch made? We've had ours for over 2 years. This leash is our go-to leash. Our dog is a hyperactive 85-90 lbs of force. When out walking, our dog will often go from calmly walking to a full-out sprint, especially when he thinks he sees a bunny or squirrel... or you know, a leaf lol (in his defense, he can't see all too well), so smells often get him going too. I'm surprised this leash hasn't broken for us yet. We've put this leash through it all... rain, snow, throwing it in the car, dropping it - you name it. We've had other similar style leashes, and they didn't hold up.
Not durable
Webbing material started to fray after just 4-5 months of daily use
Great light leash
I'm enjoying this leash mostly because of its simplicity: it is super light and has no heavy metal pieces, so particularly well suited for smaller dogs. While the handle could be a little softer, I like that the hook has a little rubber safety feature that prevents the leash from coming loose. I personally would love to see some reflective lining added.
Easy to use and secure!
This leash works very well, even with a strong dog at the end of it! The clip is nice and secure, and I’m confident that even if she pulls at the leash, it is sturdy and will hold up. It was easy to quickly attach. The handle is very comfortable, and fits well over my hand even if I have puffy gloves on. The orange color is cute and easy to see!
Good for travel
The Ruffwear Front Range Leash has some really great things going for it, but it misses the mark in a few areas that prevent it from being my go-to leash for every day use. My favorite features on this leash are the clip, the handle, and the fact that it packs down small. The clip is really easy to use with one hand - the carabiner style and the 360 degree rotation makes hooking and unhooking your wriggling beast a snap. The handle is reinforced with a nice, thick piece of fabric to give it a good heft. The fabric in the main part of the leash is quite thin, which means that the leash is lightweight and packs down small for traveling and stowing away. Unfortunately, the thin fabric is also this leashes main drawback. Because the leash doesn’t have much diameter, it slips through your hand easily. For those who don’t give their dog the full length of the leash, or if your dog has a tendency to pull, this is a real issue. It makes the leash hard to hang onto, and it can dig into your hand which can be a bit painful. My suggestion to make this leash even better would be to take the loop that is at the very bottom of the leash and move it to be halfway up the leash. This would solve the problem having a spot to hold onto, and to be honest the loop is not doing much good in it’s current position. Most people would just grab the dogs collar rather than trying to snag the loop at the base of the leash. Overall, I’ll keep using this leash when I travel and hike, but it won’t replace my thicker rope-style leash for everyday walks.
