Wait until Prana learns from this mistake..
Bought these to replace the old ones I had from years back. (Used those for climbing and everything! Besides stretching out a bit and a few broken stitches, they're still in decent shape) The new design is a big let down. The button design may look cool, but is a quick fail point and stretches overtime. The material feels the same, but I got 2 holes from my pen clip after a few weeks! Same pen went into my old shorts for years. Come on Prana.. just make them like you used to! Then I'll buy a few more pairs. For now, I'm returning these and not buying them again.
WHY RUIN A GOOD THING?
The new fabric is flimsy and shiny and unattractive. The new button is terrible. I was a devoted Zion stretch short fan for years but I can’t get behind this new design. Also, the old design was great but after a few years I noticed the fabric quality started to decline when buying new pairs. I was hoping this new version would use a stiffer and more sturdy fabric but still with a little stretch. We need a version three and soon or some other company is getting my money and I’ll wear out all my old Zion’s waiting for something better. I’ve probably bought at least 10 pairs of the old version.
New Version - Flawed Button
I purchased a pair of Zion II 12"for my son and the button snapped in half the first time he wore them. He has over a dozen Zion 12" shorts and they are the only shorts we wears and he wears them every day year round ( 16 years/so. Cal) . I cannot say enough good things about the earlier version of the zion 12", they are long enough for a 6'3" boy, they dry quickly, the fabric holds up, they are versatile for many occassions ie backpacking, school and dress up. I am not returning them because he needs black shorts for work and I cant find an older version with the metal button in black and he only wears the zion 12" so I have no option but to keep them and make them work. I ut off the strip that the button was on and sewed a generic button back onto them and they are fine for him now. Please go back to the metal button !!!!
horrible new design. please go back to old one!
The new button is horrible. Why change something that isn’t broke. Or, why change something that is perfect! I only wear Prana shorts. I have had 5 pairs and still wear all of them. It was time for a new color, and I am so upset they changed the design. The new button is plastic. Why would they do this? What’s the reasoning behind it? I would honestly like to know. And the material is shiny. Looks and feels much cheaper then before. Prana please go back to the old ways. I will be retiring these and looking for a new brand now, or waiting for Prana to fix their horrible mistake.
Poorly designed
An older pair of these are my favorite shorts. These new ones have some serious design downgrades and didn’t work out for me. The new fabric has a odd sheen, the bottom hem is sewn in such a way that it flairs out around the knees like bell-bottoms, and worst of all the button is now plastic and attached loosely by a piece of webbing/fabric. They used to be nicely tapered too, now they feel baggy and shapeless. I really hope Prana will reverse course on some of these unfortunate design changes.
Significant downgrade over original
I have been a loyal wearer of the original stretch zion shorts for a number of years, and the new design is a serious disappointment. The original fabric had a beautiful matte classy look, while the new fabric is oddly shiny and not appropriate for casual wear. The new button design also has the button sewn through a long floppy piece of fabric rather than firmly attached with a metal rivet, which causes it to sit oddly and will likely be an early point of failure.
New Button Redesign = Planned Absolesence
I will start by mentioning that I have 4 pairs of Prana stretch Zion shorts that I have purchased over the last 6-7 years. All are extremely resilient and have held up very well over the years. Even after all these years of continual use I only have one pair that has ever torn. This was on the back of the pocket where I kept my money clip at the time and was obviously caused by the rough metal Clip. I recently went to purchase more since I have been wanting to add some new colors to my wardrobe. Immediately when I received my new pair I realized that the design had changed. Instead of the older style button there is a cheap plastic one that is held on by a single little strap. The strap pulls to the side and bunches up when warn. After having my other pairs for so long it is clear that the new style will not hold up as long as the older design. In addition to that the material feels less soft to the touch and not as much stretch as the original. Contemplating returning them. Really disappointing since they have been my go to for years now and the cost is too high for the new lower quality version 2.
Totally agree with last review from SF.
Old Zion shorts were my favorite, lived in them during the summer. New shorts have reflection, shine. They are also way more baggy in rear. I probably will unfortunately return these, hopefully Prana will go back to old Zion style.
Why change a great thing?
I know others have said the same thing but if enough people mention it, maybe Prana will take notice. They've messed with the sizing, fabric, and button making a less-than-average product. I bought 2 during the REI sale to replace some older zions. Sadly, I'll be returning the new ones and looking for a new brand.
decline in quality
Have lots of pairs of the older Zion. They’re still good. These Zion IIs, however, have significantly worse fabric quality, like others have said. It seems thinner and much more prone to rips and tears. Very disappointed. Returned.
