Best Coat Ever — No Promo, REAL TALK!
Best winter coat I’ve ever had, no joke, this is not part of a promotion I paid for this coat and love it — want it in more colors. I’ve lived most of my life on the east coast, legit cold winters — was looking for a decent priced coat, without a ton of branding, just a black bubble coat with a hood. The dimensions are good, the hood closure around the face is amazing…i’ve worn it in 8° weather with a t-shirt to walk the dog. This coat is the only coat I am going to need all winter.
Coldfront Checks the Boxes
There are many brands offering puffer jackets and many reviews that are truly only opinion, so choosing a puffer jacket online can be daunting. So a starting point was keeping my priorities in mind: intended use for winter season, durable fabric, warm, can be worn alone or as a midlayer insulator, and not over-priced. The Coldfront Hooded Jacket came today, and though I worried the fit would be too big, it actually fits well (size S) and meets my priorities. For the design team, the sleeve cuffs could be at least 1 cm less circumference and the sleeves themselves about 2 cm less in width, and it would still fit a base layer and fleece underneath.
QC control?
The jacket looks great from outside. But when I check the inside, there are many uncut threads and some parts had stitch goes through 2 or 3 times with loose threads. I had same issue with another review that zipper cannot go all the way up but my skin does not touch the metal part of zipper. No matter how much good material you used, if the building quality is poor, it turns people away. For me, this jacket does not worth even half price.
Nice coat but arms too short
I really wanted to keep this jacket, as it seems warm with a good amount of loft. Unfortunatly, the arms are too short and cuffs and neck area too open to the elements. The body is also a bit baggy in the belly, but not a deal breaker since I planned to use as an overcoat. I read that it ran large and was hoping that would run in the arm length too. Unfortunatly, the arm length is too short, especially if using as a belay jacket. Not sure what's going on with OR, but I have noticed the fit has changed in recent years to accomodate wide, short-armed people. It's feels a bit weird putting on a giant coat with short arms.
Sizing a little hard to judge - Mail order
First purchased a 2xl based on reviews of smaller sizes saying this jacket is very large for its size - which may be true for S - L. When the 2xl arrived it fit slim like other known slim brands. Ended up buying a 3xl to be able to put on over a sweater in cold weather. This 3xl arrived but was noticably thinner on down fill. Like the same amount of down was used for a larger size hoodie. Seeing a friends L confirmed that his was much puffier than the larger sizes. Overall is light and packs up nicely in the pack, but in larger sizes it is not oversized, and could use more fill. I needed something for COLD weather.

Definitely keeps you warm.
Excellent protection from cold. Construction is very good and should perform well for a long time. Sizing is a bit small. I would recommend going 1-2 sizes up from your usual, particularly if you are already bundled up to some extent. I normally wear an XL size and ordered this in XXL, fits perfectly with no bulky clothes underneath. The coat is very well engineered to move with you if you're active.
Best winter jacket ever
I bought this to use it as a winter jacket in Chicago and it is absolutely amazing. A few days ago it was below 0F with windchill in the -20s, and this was impenetrable with a fleece under it. It is extremely light yet very warm, and so comfortable. I'm 5'10 145ish lbs and the medium is great for layering, or using it with just a tshirt under (its slightly roomy but you just gotta tighten the waist elastics a bit). I love being able to get into my car and putting my seatbelt on without having to unzip it too. I got this on sale but would buy it again at full price because it's such a great jacket.
Everything you need in a puffer
Great puffer that goes toe to toe with jackets twice the price. Already seen plenty of use in the great freeze of late 2022. So warm I had to shed my mid-layer after 10 minutes of shoveling snow in -30 wind chill. I'm 5'9", 170 lbs, athletic build and a medium fits great, enough room to layer underneath but not loose. No down shedding thus far and the material feels durable so I'm not worried it ever will. Only "negative" I can say is the women's version of this coat has an inner storm cuff in the sleeves with a thumbhole. The men's does not have this feature, and the cuffs are on the large size. But winter gloves allowed a snug fit that did not allow any wind or snow into the sleeves.

Coldfront Closely Nails It
What drew me to the Coldfront was its durable 30 denier face fabric, its warmth, and functional design as my winter insulator. In regards to delivering a balance of casual and technical style, the Coldfront so closely nails it. Here's why, in my opinion. The sleeve definitely should taper to a smaller circumference cuff and elastic. Not only would that give it a sportier, sleeker appearance, but also keep cold drafts from nullifying all the downy warmth, while creating that perfect balance of being a dutiful outer and mid layer. With these minor tweaks, the Coldfront would be a serious contender against Rab, Patagonia, and Fjallraven. And at its value-driven price point, it would win hands down.
Too small in the sleeves for layering
I'm 6'2", 200 lbs. I have a 43" chest and 36" sleeve. While wearing the jacket over a t-shirt, I could not move my arms 90 at the shoulders or elbows without the material binding, flattening the down, and constricting motion. This is not the case with other similarly warm size L jackets I own, so I attribute it to poor fit- maybe to keep the design simpler and the price more reasonable, I'm not sure. I think the need is there for a durable, warmer than average down jacket for moving in the mountains, so if they revised the design I would try it again. The current one didn't work for me.
