Super Easy Set Up Car Canopy/Awning
I just got this REI car canopy/awning and was anxious to set it up. I'm mountain biking today with some friends and decided to set it up on my driveway to give me some shade while I was packing the suv. My topline on this canopy is SUPER EASY to set up and it provides great shade with lots of space. I can't wait to set it up for some shade after biking, hiking, or camping. It took me 5 minutes to set it up this first time, and instructions were easy to follow. I used the straps provided to anchor it to my subaru, and used a weight with a carabiner to attach to the strap as one corner of the canopy was on a hard surface, and staked the other corner into the ground. This is very light, about 5 pounds in total, and packs up into a small bag. I like that I can keep my rear gate open when using this for more space and shade. I think I'll keep this bagged up in the back of the suv since it's so compact, and can be used in lots of situations. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars is I'm not sure about how it will work in rain or heavy wind. Overall, excellent addition to my outdoor gear.
Excellent for truck bed campers
Bought this to use for sun and rain protection for my truck bed camper and it’s works better than expected. Setup and takedown is easy, and it actually fits back into its sleeve without any hassle. Offers a nice covered area to hang out when the sun or rain are beating down, plenty of space for a small group (we had 6 people comfortably taking shelter from a heavy downpour) and allows a nice space for keeping gear out of the elements. After several hours of heavy rain, it still held up and kept everything dry. We used a kayak paddle to prop up the center to keep rain from pooling up. Guy likes and stakes included are much appreciated. Haven’t tried it on our Subaru yet, but I believe it will work just as well.
Great waterproof awning!
Love this awning! I have set it up with a partner and alone. It is definitely doable in either scenario. I have used with our teardrop T@G camper and on its own! The image with the Jeep, the awning is not attached to anything other than the ground with stakes! I used it more like a tent/ waterproof area. It was a great rain free area to relax, make a meal, read, keep wood dry, etc. (I didn’t not want it attached to the Jeep.) The other image attached to the camper is how it is typically used. It is great for extra privacy too! This image was taken after a day of heavy rain and 20 mph winds! Both awnings were staked very well, and both survived with no issues.
A tailgate for my Subaru
Set this up by myself . I was strategic with making sure that I had all my guy lines attached prior to initializing to raise the structure. It is important to have a secure hatchback if you support pistons are worn you will need to support the hatchback with a pole or some other form of support…it did well in the wind . I will be sending a follow up review at a different location with Mountain wind and exposure .
Convenient for when you want some shade!
This is a great sun shelter. I purchased a couple of tent poles to use this sun shelter as a stand alone shelter when not attached to my vehicle.
Works well on T@G XL teardrop camper
I'm a teardrop camper on a budget. Other clam shell awnings available command a premium price. At $150 regular retail, this shelter does everything I needed to do and then some. The flexibility to open it up or extend the awning with additional poles seems to be unmatched. Although not marketed as a teardrop camper add-on, I think it fits like a glove. As always, the craftsmanship and quality from REI are top notch. My only real quibble is that I will never ever be able to get it back in the stuff sack again.
Great, versatile little shelter
So far I really like this shelter, I've pitched it twice and used it once overnight in the rain. I can put it up myself, (5'3" female.) It worked to keep rain out of my car with the rear windows cracked overnight. Its versatile, pull it farther forward on your car to cover windows and keep the back part close to your vehicle or farther back for more room under the canopy. There's lots of ways to attach it to your car/the ground, I ended up getting extra stakes and guy lines to attach to the ground around my vehicle.
Quick fix for Shade at the Park or on the Parkway
Quick fix for shade at festivals or out for a picnic on the blue ridge parkway is what I purchased this awning or shelter for. With small children I'd envisioned being able to keep the baby up off the ground in the back of our SUV while our toddler can be on the ground with room to move while still being in the shade. I'd read other reviews and given the price took a chance. I didn't have any issues connecting the straps to my wheels (I did find it easier to wrap around a spoke that the entire tire). It was a little cumbersome to setup alone, but doable in 5-10 min the first time. I did go ahead and purchase the tent poles to lift the shade and make more space as needed (note: they come in a single pack so get two and I'd recommend the 6' version). I can understand that if someone is really car camping out west or overlanding this might not be the right option, but the better options for that are going to run 2-4x as much $$. I haven't run into a windy day, but plan on bringing a couple extra stakes for guy lines on previously mentioned poles if trees aren't available.
Seems great to me!
I just did the quick yard setup. I'm not sure about some of the complaints. I have set up a lot of tents over the years and this seems straightforward. I glanced at the instructions and agree they are pretty useless but the design is pretty easy. I did it alone in seven minutes in a strong breeze. I tied the front leads to the rear car handles, assembled and inserted the hoop pole and staked out the far end corners. the breeze was from the front of the car but I thing staking out the rear then hoop and then attaching to the car n the reverse would work with the breeze from the rear. After it's up you can fine tune the positions of everything such as staking out the front wings as shown in one photo. I set it up for maximum space but it can all be shifted forward to have side coverage over the car windows. The materials and construction all seem top-notch and the array of straps and tie downs make the car connection very flexible. I might try it with some removable suction cups (Harbor Freight) I have as well. Great for cars and it seems a must for teardrop trailers.
Better than I expected…
Used the shelter for the first time over my truck bed tent and it performed better than I expected in heavy rain and wind while camping. Highly recommend.
