2 year update
Update after having the Roadshower 4 gal for two years now. Admittedly it doesn't get as much use as I thought, a few times here and there but this year mounted up and used for good camping trip and leaving it up there for the summer fall. In my initial review I mentioned there's no way to fully drain without removing, what I am attempting now is using a simple cheap hand pump siphon to drain all the remaining water out, then leaving the fill cap off (with a small piece of screen over it) and drain valve open for a day to dry out as much as possible. I also run some clean distilled water through it if not in use for a few weeks. I added two L brackets to the "back side" in addition to the units standard brackets to mount underneath. Overkill maybe but it's attached to my Thule bars solid. Last camping trip there was water at the site so I filled in the am and it did warm up some over the day. 4 gal unit provided me with either 2 very quick showers or one nice long one. It also did a decent job of getting some of the mud of my mountain bike after a ride. Upon filling with water I found psi maxes out at around 50 psi and with an upgraded hose and nozzle from Home Depot (on cone spray setting) I got really nice pressure till it ran out. Decent little unit, let's see how it holds up with some more use this summer. Great being able to get a quick shower in right at camp. Another upgrade Im working on now is making a shower arm out of extruded aluminum piece so hose can hang off out away from car.
3.5 Star Review - want to love this more
Want to love this product but it does have a few shortcoming and took some fine tuning to get it to function efficiently. Great concept, light and sturdy construction. Came missing the hose adaptor and REI was great about discounting the price due to not being able to get the part. After a trip to Home Depot I picked up a couple adaptors to have an extra one. Was well packaged. after initial setup I did have leaks on the plug and on/off faucet. The plug did not come prewrapped with plumbers tape so I taped it and tightened extra tight and then it did not leak. The on/off faucet leaked so I tightened it some more (directions say not to over tighten) and it still leaked, it also was at a strange angle pointing upwards. I removed and retaped and tighten down tight with a plumbers wrench, this is very tight but the only way I could get it to stop leaking. I hoping if it ever needs to be removed and replaced the threads will be ok. Took it on a 3 day camping trip and worked great. I used a small battery operated air compressor to charge and filled the tank every morning with a gallon water jug. (campground had water available so I did not have to travel with it full). The locks provided are a good idea but tricky if the brackets from the Roadshower are near your crossbar towers. They need a good bit of room to spin on so you need to keep this placement in mind. The filler/pressure release cap seems to fill with water when raining, I wonder how this holds up over time, any remaining water seemed to evaporate during the day with sun but wondering how it would hold up in a good week/month of inclement weather. My one main complaint and possible design oversight is that you have to take the tank off your rack to fully empty. (as suggested by REI after every trip) There should be a drain valve. If I use this every weekend in the summer that's a lot of on and off, not that big of a deal as the tank is light but the lock washers will wear more quickly this way. So keep an extra eye on that, I'm going to get a second set of mounting hardware to rotate if I use the tank often. And not a functional issue but aesthetic - the front and back "Yakima Roadshower" logos were printed (powder coated?) on very uneven, like it was a quick after thought so I sprayed a bit of flat black Bedliner over them, kept the Yakima logo on the side dont mind advertising the company, great products but I feel like this acquisition of Roadshower was a bit quick and could of used a little more QC and design upgrade. All that being said after some work on the unit it looks great and functions well, hoping it holds up.
Issue after issue.
Started out very useful, then the hose started getting gross, yellow and sticky on the exterior and water started to smell. Did full rinse and clean. Hose Disintegrated less than one year. Replaced it. Valve went out next. Leaking valve. Twice. Replaced valve. Then would pressurize tank but not spray. Released pressure, re pressurized and same, no spray. This on multiple overland trips. Hauled full tanks of water back home as it would not spray. $400 plus shower waste of funds. Read about the same issue on other overland sites and should have listened!
What happened Yakima?
Very excited to have purchased this only to be let down over and over. From having issues at install with the bolts not even sliding through the track to the water connector not being aligned correctly, the entire process was frustrating. After countless tries to make everything work at least partially, the pressure doesn't hold up. I am very disappointed that this product didn't live up to expectations. Will be returning to store and hopefully the brand will review this product to adjust the issues it's having.
Garbage!
First couldn’t mount shower due to defective bolt. Yakima customer support little help. Bought substitute bolt at hardware store, mounted shower, fill and pressurize, open stop cock, sprays water everywhere (leaking). Returned to REI, wait 2 weeks. Mount replacement unit, fill and pressurize (already slow leaking), open stop cock, sprays everywhere again (leaking again but from a different location). Clearly a design/workmanship/QA issue. Total garbage. Totally unusable. Total waste of time.
Cheap brass fittings
I bought this product not even a week ago. Installed in on my vehicle right away, filled it with water, pressurized the tank. When I opened the valve from the tank, I hear and see all the escape from a bad fitting on the hose. I contacted Yakima and the response I got was return it! Over a $2-3 part this is stupid, all I want is new brass fitting so it will hold air and I can keep the road shower, honestly I don’t want to return it. Frustrating to say the least, I may just buy part myself and be done with Yakima gear forever!
Works great
Works excellent. Hot and fast spray. Keep the hose inside truck via plumbing quick connect. First hose I received was defective and Yakima sent out a replacement no problem.
Contains delicious lead
It contains lead, there’s no need for this in 2024. REI doesn’t even let you know on the website, the owners manual doesn’t tell you, it’s only mentioned on the Yakima website for California residents. It’s apparently still the 18th century at REI and Yakima.
