Solid mount, but insecure
Have just driven from UK to the South of France and the rack was flawless while driving, through very heavy rain. It is not flawless while parked however. The release lever should be key operated making it harder to remove the bike as the cable lock is pathetic. Thule have replied to a few comments saying that thieves could release the axle instead, but that is a very weak excuse -for example the fork ends could be capped so the axle head isn’t accessible with an allen key. Instead I pack a separate D lock and cable but it would be a disaster if I left it on while driving.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Thule TopRide. I'm glad to hear that it was such a great addition to your road trip! Your concerns for the security of your bike are totally understandable. The cable lock provides a measure of theft deterrence that will hold off casual thieves, but a dedicated thief intent on stealing a bike will find a way to circumvent most security measures, usually damaging the bike rack in the process. The only sure-fire way to protect a bike is to store it in a secure location if it will be unattended for long periods of time.
Secure, quiet. I love the design!
I have been carrying bikes on top of my cars for over 3 decades and this is by far the Easiest and most convenient in regard to axle size and type. You put the corresponding cartridge on the front of the bike, slide it in and it locks in place then you slide the ratchet strap down and snug it up. I use for both MTB and road bikes. If you need to lock you bike up, you insert your key pull the lanyard out route thru the frame and rear wheel and lock it up. So easy :)
What an amazing product.
Hands down the best car rack and bike mount system out there. What a simple process to put together. I installed this with the bike rack in about an hour. It's really sturdy and easy to mount my bike. I definitely feel completely comfortable and confident that my bike is secure. I don't even notice that it's up on top of the car while driving. I've owned a Yakima in the past and I like the Thule TopRide and Evo setup better.
Set it and forget it.
Very satisfied with the TopRide. The adapter system works great and so far it covers all my bikes, from older road bikes with quick release skewers, to my modern gravel/mtb thru-axle bikes. The only minor drawback is keeping track of all the adapters as they are essential. Overall, it’s a well-designed, versatile rack that does exactly what it promises. I was planning on buying a second one, but the price has jumped up 33% since I made my purchase and I don’t know if I can justify a second.
A bit disappointed
In general, I'm a fan of Thule products. This one, however, has left me a bit disappointed for two reasons. The first reason being, that despite the website saying the Thule TopRide fit my car (2015 Mazda CX5), the bike rack prevents my rear lift gate from opening. Technically it may fit the car, but it doesn't really as it's too long. The second reason is that I'm not a fan of the metal bits that secure the bike rack to the cross bars. Because of the fit, I'm constantly taking this thing on and off my car. The metal pieces are always falling (it has a very odd design) and landing on my car roof. Not ideal for little dents and scratches.
Very functional rack, security disappoints
Bought this to replace an Echelon fork mount rack after upgrading bikes this year. Love how easy it is to set up and use, but am pretty disappointed in the security of the rack. I like the way the Echelon rack locks closed onto the fork so you can't open the rack without the key. The TopRide rack locks the rack to the bike with a small diameter cable that can easily be cut. I would prefer that a lock be installed on the release lever so that you are unable to release the thru axle slider without unlocking the release lever first. This would also eliminate frame contact and potential paint damage from having the cable looped through the frame of the bike.
Hi John! Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad to hear you are satisfied with the ease of installation and use of the Thule TopRide. The Thule TopRide features a rear locking cable since it attaches to the bike by the fork. Thru-axle and quick-release dropouts are difficult to lock securely since they are intended to be easily disconnected to quickly attach and detach the front bike tire. By using a locking cable, it is always possible to lock the bike frame to the Thule TopRide, regardless of any adapters used. Thule locks are designed as theft deterrents. Most bike thefts are crimes of opportunity, so the best protection is to ensure bikes are never left unattended for long periods of time and securely stored when not in use.
Solid and Sleek
I've been using my TopRide for a month and am very happy with the easy installation, rock solid carrying of my investment, and the super sleek look. I initially tried the alternative brand, but it wasn't nearly as well designed. The locking mechanism on the TopRide is fool-proof; There is never a doubt about the correct tension.
Versatile; just works
Easy to use, complete, well designed. But what I like the most is the ability to swap easily between types of bikes (road qr rim, road TA dosc, kids bike which bolt TA, etc) Just works . Only downside is the price
Intuitive and secure!!
I purchased this primarily for my mountain bike and the Proride XT for ease of transporting a larger variety of bikes in the stable. I found this rack extremely easy to install and remove from my Caprock platform and it holds the bike securely. The added feature of being able to adjust to multiple thru axel widths and quick release is an added bonus to the system. I’d highly recommend this to anyone who uses a roof system for transporting bikes.
Great Upgrades
Having used the previous generation TopRide, I was reluctant to get this version. I'm glad I tried it out as the new fork locking mechanism is solid. Easy to assemble and use, very secure and doesn't put wear on fork or thru axel. Overall a top tier Thule product. For those that can't use a hitch rack, this one is great.
