Big on the Details
It took me a little while to really come around on these, but now I’m a fan. From the start it’s hard not to notice the attention to detail you’d expect in any BD gear. I dig the way the branding and patches are integrated into the seams. And I love the pockets. The front are deep and have elastic gussets which seem to keep things in place, even if you’re getting your knees up high. The back have a sleek flap nicely integrated over the top, and there’s a side pocket, too. My only reservation was the cut (looked a little box-y at first) and the lack of belt loops, but they really do move well, have a great range of motion, and feel secure—even under a hip belt. So while they look fairly casual, they’re pretty bomber!
Durable and comfortable
I have worn these shorts continually for the last four months. They fit well.I found that the draw string needs to be adjusted from time to time, but they stay secure. I have worn these hiking in Colorado and found the comrtable and protective from brush and resistant to anvil heads. I run in these and while thick material, they are not heavy or restrictive. The rear pocket design holds wallets without risk. The front pockets work with cell phones. The zipper pocket holds keys in an easy way, they do not bind when sitttingnor roch or pull when running. These are good shorts for outdoor activity.
Great Shorts that rate a 4.5 for me.
First off, I received these shorts as an REI Product Advisor. HOWEVER, I probably would have gotten them anyway as I have an appreciation for Black Diamond's reputation and the other items I have from them have performed really well. I like these shorts, I really do. They're comfortable and the material moves with you. Plenty of flexibility to hike, bike or climb and they still look great just taking your four legged friend for a walk. I like the drawstring, but would prefer belt loops as well. I didn't have an issue with drawstring once I dialed it in. Not a problem, just my preference as I tend to use my pockets for stuff and extra weight is a given. Great length. They aren't too long as to get in the way or too short that I was worried about them binding. Also, I love that someone FINALLY realized that your cargo / secret stash pocket should point BACKWARDS. Hip pockets face forward and if you're reaching across your body, its tough to get to the bottom. With a rearward facing pocket, its far more easily accessed from BOTH SIDES. Huge points for me! Overall, great shorts for just about any adventure and I'd absolutely recommend them!
New version just as good!
Used for bouldering mainly, I own 9 pairs of these shorts. The latest 2 are the new version. The fit is exactly the same as the old. New front pocket relocation is good. The pockets seem to be slightly more narrow which keeps my phone more "upright" instead of an odd angle. I like the addition of the side pocket which is great for a slim wallet or cash. Hardly noticeable. These shorts are very comfortable to climb in. They are very comfortable to do everything in! Very durable...oldest pair is going on 3 years with only light fading. Expensive but worth it!
not quite there
No fly? All sewn up! Great fit. But kinda weird style. Strange using the bathroom without a “trap door”
My new go to shorts!
In short (pun intended) I love these shorts and they’ve become my everyday shorts during this pandemic. I am 5’10”, 170lbs with a 32 waist and the Medium fits great. I bought he black and green and they both look awesome. Super comfy with great mobility. If we were able to climb I’m sure they’d be great for that. But alas they’re good for SIP too. Plus the phone pocket is designed really well so that has been a huge bonus too.
Comfy and stretchy
The material is heavy and well-made. I like that it feels like cotton but has a bit of stretch to it. These come down to just above my knees, which I like. I'm not a huge fan of shorty-shorts. The elastic waistband with the tie in the front is nice. I wore them to a restaurant and they look nice. I also wore them to the local bouldering gym and they're nice and stretchy which allows free movement.
Favorite Shorts
These shorts fit well when most don't. The material is semi-stretchy, the pockets are perfect sized, and the color is awesome. Half of the waistband is elastic along with a high-quality drawstring in case you need them extra tight. My only complaint is that the mid-seam crotch area is sewn together a little oddly, which might be troublesome to some people. Otherwise, they are amazing.

Well made shorts that are like swim shorts
I’ve worn these around 15 days and have grown to really like them. They are well made and should last years based on how well they have held up and the many washes they have been through. I haven’t noticed any color fading. They are made with a heavy cotton that isn’t ideal in particularly hot weather. I’m not a climber so I can’t speak to how well they might handle a stretched leg. That said, the inseam is a tad long for me so I wouldn’t think they would be great for climbing. I am a pretty slim guy (6’0 and 165). No belt loops or zipper. Waist band has elastic sections on the hips and there’s a drawstring closure that leaves the strings exposed like a bathing suit. Since you wouldn’t tuck in a shirt (or at least I wouldn’t) with these, no one sees the strings. The pockets in the front and back cannot be closed but the extra pocket on the right leg has a zipper. My iPhone 13 Pro Max (the biggest made) fits in it.
Great climbing short
I really like these shorts. I tend to buy “Mens” shorts as I prefer the length. Womens shorts are always too short. The length is great I love the side zip pocket which fits my phone and it works well with my harness.. the material is strong and rugged and holds well to abrasions. I’m 5’5 and 145 lbs and the small fit me great. Im buying more in different colors!
