Bummed about the shoes and extremely disappointed with REI. Shoes are great but developed a small tear in the mesh fabric where it meets the welded upper. Obvious when you bend the shoe at the ball of the foot that the upper is pushing into the mesh. Total mileage on these shoes is a little over 100 miles over 12 hikes. Returned to the store within REIs return period. Cashier said wear and tear, footwear specialist said wear and tear. Management looked at the sole, pointed to the midsole and said the foam is compressed from use and said the tear is just wear and tear. My return wasn’t for wear on the sole, and the foam isn’t worn out after 12 hikes. The 100% satisfaction guarantee has no meaning if the vetting process is rigged.
I bought these shoes in early May of 23. I’m writing this review in the middle of September 23. These have been my daily choice for walking the dog as well as hiking and backpacking throughout the summer. I own several Danner products and they’re all very comfortable. However, after only 3.5 months hese particular shoes are starting to split in the mesh toe area and are feeling like they need replaced. My feet and ankles are fatigued and I describe it like driving on flat tires. They are great hiking shoes and are very grippy on a variety of surfaces. I feel shoes at this price point should last a bit longer than 3.5 months, in spite of being a daily wearer.
They are unique among the Danner line in two ways. They have a loop at the bottom of the laces to allow a hook and some Velcro on the heel to attach a very popular line of summer gaiters. I love this! I wish all summer hiking shoes had this. I absolutely love using gaiters in dusty or grassy areas. If you haven’t used them and you live in dry climate, do yourself a favor. The second thing is there is no tongue to speak of. The whole area where your foot slips in is a solid sewn piece. The “tongue” is made of stretchy neoprene so instead of pulling a tongue up and slipping in, you must just squeeze into a stretchy hole that holds your foot snug. I suppose it is to keep dust and pebbles out, but I find it uncomfortable. I have a high volume foot, and this shoe is hard to put on and too snug while wearing. Overall a great made shoe, but I wish it had a more conventional tongue.
I used these on my thru-hike of the A.T. in 2021 and easily got 600+ miles out of each pair before needing replaced. Even then, they were not falling apart; only replaced because I had worn the tread smooth. Best hiking shoe I have ever used! And still use for all my hikes.
I use this shoe to walk 5+ miles a day on our local paved bike trail. I find this to be a very comfortable and supportive walking shoe. I have read several reviews commenting on the lack of a standard tongue. It does make for a snug fit sliding your foot into the shoe. However, I do not find it to be too tight or restrictive. Toe box is also plenty wide.
