I love these shoes, the support they give my feet is excellent, comfort and style in one doesn’t happen very often with a hiking shoe, I had the N 45 for summer already and decided to get the N 45 GX for the rainy season. The D width is perfect for my feet. I’m a size 12. These feel like they will last for a long time.
Very tight across top of forefoot. Use of other insoles/orthotics highly unlikely. Had to return.
Love the non gtx version. I wear a size 10.5 regular. Danner didn't adjust sizing after adding the goretex and padding. The shoe is uncomfortably tight. I need to order size 11 wide. Currently danner doesn't offer the gtx in wide. I hope they offer a wide version soon.
These shoes look less capable in the pictures than they feel in person. The textile on the upper is very abrasion resistant and the rands feel protective. I usually wear a 44 in euro sizes with a forefoot that is right between a D and a EE and a high arch that requires a lot of volume in the midfoot. I was pleased with the fit of these in size 11. The toe was just a mm or two long, and the heel was a little loose until I re-laced it to get more heel lock. The Vibram outsoles feel more durable than an approach shoe but more grippy than average for a hiking shoe, and I like that I can get them resoled. They are a little steamy, but no more than you'd expect from a shoe with a Gore Tex liner. They wouldn't be my first choice if the temperature were in the 90s or above, but I have sandals for that. Midsole feels bouncy, but stable and supportive, and there are no odd bulges that I feel around either side of the heel cup area that might bug someone sensitive to such things. I'm aware of what the ground is like under my foot, but the midsole damps the edges of any rocks underfoot nicely and feel planted. Overall, they are comfortable and seem sturdy enough that I'd trust them on a challenging day hike with a light pack. They are certainly more confidence inspiring than a lot of the more running shoe inspired fast-and-light shoes with thick midsoles and rockers on the shelves. These definitely feel capable.
