Comfy flattering shorts
These shorts are a nice soft brown with a comfortable wide elastic waistband and cute white and red draw string. They are a flattering mid thigh length and versatile enough to wear camping or hiking. The fabric is on the thicker side so very tear resistant but maybe not ideal for a really hot and humid day. The only thing to know about these shorts is that if you have thicker thighs like me, they are cut a bit on the narrower side so they can bunch a bit. Got lots of compliments on these.
Quality Shorts, Depends on Your Style
These shorts are comfy enough to wear on a work from home day. The length is perfect and they feel like quality material. Seems durable enough to withstand an intense hiking or camping trip (it hasn't been warm enough to wear them outside yet) . I think it's the cut that keeps me from loving them. They feel like mom shorts or what you'd get to wear on a safari or something. That wont stop me from wearing them, but they wont be go-tos. On first the waistband felt tight for a small (I'm 5'4"/~120lbs) but it broke in and was fine, so I'd say true to size but if you're in between, go up.
Comfortable All-Purpose Short
These shorts could easily go from the trail to a post-hike beverage in the town; especially with the zipper back pocket to store the essentials. The fit is good, not too short and wide enough to allow for freedom of movement. The material is breathable, but also sturdy. I wasn't sure about the color at first, but it would indeed allow you to play in the dirt and not have to wash them too often - a nice environmental bonus. Another plus to this product is the sustainable company practices: organic cotton, reduced water and energy consumption and durability. Overall, I foresee these being my go-to shorts this summer.
Comfy and durable, not flattering on all bodies
I’ve worn these shorts a few times and found them to be, on the whole, only okay. They are fairly comfortable, except the high-waisted drawstring and elastic waistband can cut into my stomach when sitting or bending. The length is great for hiking and I’m not worried about an accidental flash. The cut isn’t very flattering on my body, so these feel like a utilitarian short rather than something for a cute day out. The fabric seems durable, and a couple of scuffs/dirt marks washed right out. They don’t seem to dry particularly quickly, so I wouldn’t take them to the beach again. All that said, the best thing about these shorts is the pockets! These things have deep pockets. Really, really deep pockets. I can fit a phone in there. My spouse said the pockets are like the pockets on his pants. Really outstanding pockets!
Mixed Feelings
I was sent the shorts directly from Topo Designs. I was disappointed in the excess packaging used to send a pair of shorts (medium sized cardboard box and a giant plastic bag). My first impression was that the Natural (brown) color is perfect because it hides dirt well. Also, the fabric is high quality. It can take a beating! Upon trying on the shorts, I found them to be the most unflattering shorts I have ever worn. (For reference, I am 5'2", 100 lbs and received an XS.) I, honestly, am not sure if the shorts are meant to be worn at one's natural waist or at the hips. At the natural waist, the inseam is very short, and even as a tiny individual, they look terrible. Wearing the shorts at the hips causes the back pockets to ride low and is also awkward. On the plus side, the shorts perform well. They move, bend and flex well. They are comfortable for long periods of time.
Durable shorts, run big
I ordered a size up (large) in these shorts because I usually run between sizes and I have a bubbly bum. I definitely did not need to order a size up and could have gone with the medium. Otherwise the shorts seem well made and durable. They're also comfortable.
Basic shorts with cute details
Topo Designs- Dirt shorts- First- I don't often wear shorts. So when I do, I want them to fit well and feel flattering. These shorts are a nice length and felt comfortable in that respect. The waist is an elastic waist with a drawstring tie, which feels less flattering than if they were button/zip up. However, the drawstring is pretty cute (imagine black and white shoelaces with little red caps) and definitely convinces me the shorts are fine to wear. The color is not my favorite; it's a very dirt-mud color, but it matches most tops and sweaters. The fabric is soft but holds its shape and seems like good quality material. Overall, the shorts are cute enough, comfortable enough and good quality to continue wearing; I just wish I felt a little cuter in them!
I’m tiny
OK so I so wanted to love these shorts… And I did love these shorts… But I am super tiny like double zero no butt, no legs and they look great from the front. Horrible from the back so I returned them.wish I had a butt.
Returned
The material of these felt sturdy and they were a good length to prevent chafing. But the pockets on the hips really stick out in an unflattering way. Worst of all the back seam gave me a constant wedgie. Maybe they would be better for someone with a less full backside.
LOVE but runs a little large
I bought the dirt pants and had to buy the dirt shorts! Study fabric but still lightweight. So comfortable hiking or just running errands.
