Great for half-day adventures
I received this hydration pack in May but didn't have a chance to fully test it out until last week. I decided to wait until I could really put it through its paces for a thorough review instead of just a cursory look. To me, this pack is perfect for half-day adventures. If you're going on a full-day (or multi-day) epic, you're going to need more storage and more water. But for shorter trips, this has been great. With the bladder full, I managed to fit in bug spray, sunblock, a bike pump, my keys, and my id/credit card/cash clip. I appreciated the little details on the pack. The hanging loop for the bladder kept it from bunching up in the bottom of the bag. The padding on the straps and back did a good job of keeping me less sweaty (as much as could be expected on a 95F day!). I liked having 2 separate compartments, and the clip for keys is nice for making sure they don't accidentally fall out when you're on a chairlift. The locking lever on the bite valve is great for making sure the pack doesn't leak when you toss it in the car or into a bigger backpack, and the disconnect for cleaning the tube will come in handy later on. I wore this pack while biking on a rail-trail, hiking around the Red River Gorge area in KY, and doing the Via Ferrata climb in that same area. I never felt encumbered by the straps and the pack sat nicely in place as I scrambled around. I did drink ALL of the water on one of the days (again, it was 95F) so if you think you need more volume, consider the larger size. My only complaint was that I could not see a way to move the clip for the tube from the right side over to the left side, but that isn't really a big deal - you just get used to having it on the right. To sum up - CamelBak paid good attention to details and made great design decisions to come up with a nearly-perfect pack for shorter adventures.
Like It's Not Even There
Getting more into bikepacking, I've recently been focusing on moving more weight to the frame of my pack, and off of my back. The problem with this is still keeping hydrated while keeping moving. This pack is very minimalist, breathes well, and is quite comfortable. I've taken it on multiple 50-mile rides on my gravel bike and found it very comfortable and well riding for a unit with no hipbelt. Pocket is big enough for keys, wallet, etc., but not big enough for tire pump, larger repair items if your deeper away from the cars.
Great Little Hydrobak for a Day Hike
Used the Hydrobak several times on day hikes of 3-5 miles. This is a great little back and you barely realize you have it on. I was a little worried about the mesh shoulder straps bunching up and digging into my shoulders, but they were fantastic. Overall a great pack, but the one drawback I have is the storage pocket is a little small. I like to put a first aid kit, keys, & wallet, but the storage pocket is a little tight to store all of that. I could see this also being a great hydrobak for running or biking as it is small enough and you barely realize it is there. Overall, I highly recommend the pack and think it is awesome for day hikes.
Great hydro pack for running
Great little hydration pack. A bit awkward to fill, but not too bad. The bladder is supposed to be a 1.5 litre bladder, but if it's filled to full it leaks like a sieve around the bladder cap. Filled to a bit over 1 litre however, it works great and doesn't leak too much at all. Comfortable to wear and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't chafe anywhere over a 10 mile run on a hot humid day. Best option I've found for carrying water on long runs. I'd buy it again.
New Design Sucks!
Whoever designed this updated version of the Hydrobak should be fired. Trying to access the bladder opening is a challenge to say the least, and don't even bother thinking about refilling it quickly at an aid station as the bladder opening is seated deep inside the bladder pouch and requires detaching the entire bladder to get it far enough out to access the opening. A perfect example of what happens when someone over engineers a product that worked just fine in the first place.
Better features than Osprey
I returned my Osprey hydration pack and got this one. I’m really pleased with my decision. You can hold the hydration pack with one hand while using the other hand to fill it up. You can lock the drinking spout, this prevents water from leaking when the bag is laying flat. These features were missing from Osprey.
Can't run without it
I tried running belts and hand-held water bottles before but this hydration pack trumps them. It fits my phone and keys and holds a perfect amount of water. It has minimal bounce and very comfortable straps. 100% recommend!
Perfect Size for My Road Running
I'm a runner and previously had used a larger CamelBak for trail runs, but it was too large/bulky for road running, and wanted something lighter. This one fits the bill! After a bit of adjustment, I hardly felt it, and the mesh back kept my back cooler than I expected. I love the huge opening to fill the reservoir, and it was easy to take out and put back in. The small pocket on the front isn't as handy as I'd like, since I can't reach it while I'm running. It would be nice to have a tiny pocket on the front straps, but I totally understand that would make it bulkier and maybe less comfortable.
Perfect for trail running.
Perfect size for a short to medium trail run. Just enough room for a energy bar and a light wind shell. After a run, didn't feel sweaty like other hydration packs - stayed snug and in place during the entire run.
Virtually weightless
Purchased this to replace my classic and so far I’m very happy with my purchase. I’ve used it 6-7 times on day hikes, trail running and cycling. Storage compartment is perfect for a phone, keys and a food bar or two. It’s super lightweight and barely feels like you’re wearing anything. Highly recommend this product.
