Tail strap is no longer field replaceable
I've had many pairs of skins and generally prefer BD skins (vs G3) due to better glide and better glue. But, the major weakness of the BD skins has always been the lack of durability of the tail strap. In previous versions this was annoying but easily remedied by carrying extra tail straps to replace in the field. But, no longer: the new tail strap design is not field replicable. In fact, you have to pop out the rivets and rivet in a new strap. G3 and Pomoca tails are much more durable, so not as much of an issue. The other weakness of BD skins had always the tip attachment. This year's model seems to be an improvement in that respect. The skin material seems great (as usual) and the glue is the same classic glue. But, a broken tail strap on a longer trip can be a serious annoyance. Sad to say: I returned these and am trying a different brand.
Do not buy - too fragile
Do not buy these. I just filed a warranty request for my second pair after both tail clip attachments ripped off during an overnight trip with just 3 prior days on the skins (on groomed XC trails). One of my companions had both of his tail pieces on a similarly new pair of Glidelites fail during the trip as well. The rivets are too fragile and not strong enough to be redundant. As another reviewer from a year ago states, the tail straps are not field replaceable. This pair was a warranty replacement (June 2021) for a prior pair purchased in January 2021 that had the tips start to tear away from the skin after ~10 trail days and in the middle of a 4 day trip on Mt. Baker. It does appear that BD semi-addressed that by pre-tapering the tip skin so you start your cut far away from the tip loop but I frankly would not trust the durability of these skins for any trip into consequential terrain.
Skin Bliss
So I've been skiing BDE Ascension skins for years. As a crusty BC skier I hate paying more. I bought these, and they saved so much battle with tools getting the tip on the skin. Everyone knows how hard that was - the holes were not drilled right for the screws! This was like, stick it on, smooth cut, done! Straight reggaeblast. No problem! Plus, the tip ring sits on the ski so plush.
Glue failed on second use
Catastrophic glue failure on my second tour with these skins. Gobs of glue were stuck to the skin savers as I took my skins out to slap on my skis. I toured anyway, and discovered, to my horror, reams of glue stuck on my ski bases during my transition. I've had better luck with pomoca. G3 don't even get me started - I've had two glue failures after just a season of use. I thought BD glue was good, not sure if I got a bad batch, but super frustrating either way.
These work great
I’m new to the sport and these are my first skins but I’ve had no issues. They work well for long or short days. No complaints!
