Good Product, Disappointing Customer Support

The Oru Inlet is exactly what I'm looking for as a Seattle apartment dweller who likes to get out on the water after work during the week, but doesn't have the storage space for a full-size kayak. I'm only interested in flat water like lakes and slow-moving rivers, so this one fit the bill perfectly. It's also has a big opening, the perfect spot for my 50lb dog to chill between my legs or standing on the bow. It comes together in three minutes just like they say, and packs up to the size of a large suitcase. My biggest disappointment has been the customer service from Oru. One of the buckles broke the first time I put it together, and it took Oru product support two full weeks to get back to me. It's been two more weeks since then, and I still don't have any idea when I'll get the replacement parts. I've made due in the meantime, but I'm truly disappointed with their lack of customer care. Oru has blamed lack of / slow response time on covid, but in reading on message boards this is not a new problem. They either simply won't staff up to support existing demand, or they just don't care. Overall I'd say get this kayak, but don't count on Oru being for you should you run into any problems. Yet another reason to purchase from REI so that you're safeguarded against these issues.

Great for Traveling!

I travel for work and take my Oru Inlet everywhere with me. It stores away into the trunk of my CX-5 easily. It is very easy to setup and fold back down. It’s great for getting out onto flat water anytime I feel like. The boat is very wide and short. Meaning it will turn very easily, sometimes too easily, and it is very slow. A great boat for a relaxing day on the lake. I’ve taken the boat out over a dozen times now and only had a buckle break. It was easy to replace.

Worth it!

I’ve been eyeing an Oru Kayak for years and was so excited to get this model once I discovered it! It really does take less than 5 minutes to set up, and it’s even faster to “tear” down. I’ve only taken it out for one trip so far and thought it handled very nicely. I was looking for a kayak that was easy to store and easy to put together- this is both and exceeds expectations. It’s also roomy and has plenty of space to carry other items, including your dog! Love the adjustable foot rest and seat back as well. I’ll plan to edit this review if anything changes, but I highly doubt it. Had to get this out there because I truly think this product is a gem!

Love it

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been paddling in smooth water for a long time. I had a hardsided kayak for many years yet it got to difficult to get it on top of the car so I sold it. Recently a friend invited me to join her in her Oru tandem. It was great and I decided to purchase an Inlet for myself. The ease of transport and the light weight make it a breeze to get in the water. I’ve practiced several times setting up and folding down. At first it was very hard but it is better now as the sides are less stiff and I watched the video on the website for hints. It takes me under 10 minutes to set it up and get in the water. The first time I went out on slightly choppy water on a small inland lake, no power boats. It handled as well as my hardsided kayak did. It moves smoothly without drag and turns with ease. I never felt unsteady though I have not had it out on a big lake or river yet. My one complaint: I would like a good place to put my water bottle. I clipped it to one of the places for the carrying strap but had to unclip each time to drink. It was awkward. My 66th birthday is next month. I thought my kayaking days were limited to rentals and the kindness of friends. This kayak has returned me to the relaxing simple joy of floating and paddling again.

I expected more

I've had this kayak for over a month and I've used it about 10 times. I have tried it on different lakes. 1) I didn't like it. If there is a lot of wind, the kayak moves a lot. 2) As I said, I have not used it more than 10 times and I have been super careful so that it does not get damaged, but no matter how much I have tried to take care of it, it already has some damage. I attach photos and videos. 3) In the video you can see how in some parts of the base of the kayak it seems that water has entered it and honestly I am afraid that at any moment I will be in the middle of some lake and I will get drowned because of this. 4) One of the plastic buckles on the front of the kayak was upside down and it was very uncomfortable to try to close the kayak. attach video. For the money I invested, I thought I wouldn't have so many problems.

Exactly as expected

I’ve read quite a few reviews on these and wanted to give the practical and the basics. Some people talk about the tracking, maneuverability, the speed bla bla bla etc. When I want a solid or fast or long workout, I take out my 20ft long, 18” wide fast boat. The Oru is not for that. This is your 2nd or 3rd boat for the days you just want to throw it in the car at the last minute, wear your sneakers, maybe toss the dog in, and paddle next to your 8yr old granddaughter while she tools around 2-3mph in her kid size kayak for an hour. It is perfect for that. I bought the optional backpack and glad I did. I brought it with me for a hotel stay in downtown Jacksonville and no problem walking 1/4 mile down the river with my dog on a leash, till I found a put-in. There’s just no way I would’ve dragged my 20ft boat thru all that. I read complaints about the seat - I have absolutely no problem. Stayed in place and as comfortable as you can expect for sitting on the bottom of the kayak for an hour. I had a good bit of chop and no issue whatsoever…stable and no water over the sides. I’m a fan…does exactly what I expected for my main mission - a short leisurely paddle just for fun that you can toss in the car without a whole lot of planning.

Everything I hope for!

As a mom to 3 small children, I knew I needed a kayak that would allow me to get out on the water quickly and easily, so I can take advantage of every spare minute I can grab. The Inlet has done that and so much more. It’s incredibly quick and easy to set up and pack away, and I get to maximize my lake time. It’s so light to carry and small to store, but it can also cut through the water perfectly (to this first-time kayaker, at least)! I’ve also been able to take all three of my girls with me, when I just NEED to get out on the lake—it’s definitely a heavier paddle (we juuuust about reach the weight limit together), but then I get to chase loons with my girls!

Just love it!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great invention. It is so easy to store, transport, assemble, navigate, and dissemble. I immediately got the second one so that I can enjoy it with my friends. I weigh 130 pounds and I use it with a seven year girl 50 pounds and a Chihuahua 10 pounds. It was so stable and we love the experience. I definitely recommend recommended to all who were thinking about the new adventure with kayaks. Thank you and congrats to the team.

Great Kayak for spontaneous adventures

After taking some classes last year I finally decided to get my own Kayak. I took it out on it’s maiden voyage today and I am impressed. It assembles as easy as promised, is very stable and with the open build has a lot of space. It tracks well and is very maneuverable. And 5 minutes after you are out of the water you are on you way back.
