Best Stable Fun Kayak
This is a sturdy well built Kayak. It's everything I would expect from Perception. The ease of use pedal drive was the ice breaker! It's nice not having to take the PDS out, turn it around and place it back in or pulling on a cord in order to go into reverse. This might not be an issue for most Kayakers. However, when I'm fishing or on an adventure(my hands full), I need that instant reverse to get me out of the shallows or away from an obstruction quickly without struggle. It has ample room for fishing gear, cooler and accessories. If there is a con: the back handle is off on one side of the kayak which throws the balance off while loading and unloading. Might not be an issue for most. I'm a 5'3" female so I will be adding another handle on the other side. I believe that side was left for future pains of troll motor. I will modify the shallow cup holder.
Great Kayak - packaging & assembly not
Bought two of these kayaks. Nicely made, great pedal mechanism and easy to handle. Assembly directions were missing in both boats so got those from the internet. The tool for attaching the rudder was missing in one of the two boats. Rudder lines were a tangled mess. Only one boat has the manufacturers hull id information with is needed in Idaho. Overall a great boat once you get past the lack of assembly directions and missing tools.
Peddling beats paddling!
My wife and I are really enjoying this peddle kayak- we are new to the sport and also bought an inexpensive sit-on-top kayak so we've been able to compare them. The peddle drive system is MUCH faster and easier than paddling...the Crank can literally turn circles around the paddle kayak. Steering with the rudder via the left-hand rudder control knob is easy although it would be nice to have a more ergonomic handle. Peddling backwards is possible and is just like having brakes. Our local river has some shallow spots where it is necessary to retract the drive system. Although raising/lowering the drive system is fairly simple, be aware that it will take more than just a few seconds to do it so be sure to practice doing it ahead of time so it's done well in advance of the shallows. I learned the hard way that once it hangs up, it can be a bit tricky to get unstuck. Thankfully the prop and drive system had no damage (it seems pretty tough). I was surprised to find (and REI confirmed this) that Perception doesn't provide an owner's manual/instructions of any kind with the boat (info is only available online) For mechanically inclined users the assembly will be fairly intuitive. The drive/steering system does make this kayak significantly heavier than the other sit-on-top so it would be a challenge for one person to carry it. A wheelie cart is a must if you're going solo. Also, it would be nice to have some sort of clip/mount to stow the paddle since you're not using it most of the time.
cheap parts, expensive kayak
Manufacturer will not stand by their cheap parts. If you plan to fish with this angler kayak in a river, expect to be disappointed. The manufacturer says the kayak was only intended for open water because evidently fisher people do not want to fish in streams, rivers, or creeks. If you hit a log, it’s on you, they won’t support you or honor any warranty. Find another brand to buy that has more sturdy parts and a better company to stand by their designs. This is not at cheap kayak at $1500.00.
Nice kayak, but ...
A few issues from the start. A bent piece on the rudder and the plastic sheath holding the cable going into the boat is popping out. No big deal as I know REI will handle these two things when stores are operating normally again. The real issues are the paddle holder and perception in general. I reached out to their customer service and they recommended adding a paddle clip which requires adding holes to the kayak. I don't really want to put holes in the kayak. But seriously, a small wave caught the bungee and pull the paddle out to 90 degrees almost tipping me over. Second, when I brought this up to Pereception they tell me they don't recommend this kayak in the ocean. The sticker and website all state that this kayak is fine in all coastal waters. And, I also bought the pilot 12 this month as well and had the same exact experience. So which is it, are these unsafe for the sound or not?
