Potential
So I got this hatchet and right away noticed imperfections hence why I took away two stars. First the metal has horrible cutting that’s not even on both sides and at the very top making the blade look like it’s curving. Second, the sharp part has chips in it, something I can take out by sharpening but looks bad when it’s brand new. The quality control needs to step their game up for the price of this hatchet. Expected more since it’s made in Germany. Look at pics to see what I’m talking about
disapointed
12/22/21, just received this hatchet for Christmas gift giving. It's just OK, nothing more, overpriced for what it actually is. It's one of those "emperor has no clothes" kind of thing. Check out my photos before purchasing so you know what you are getting. The heft and feel of the tool is fine, no issues with that. The bevel is totally absurd, several grinds, sloppy work. Flat spots and chip outs indicate poor quality assurance. I will include the receipt and leave it up to the recipient to return or keep.
Handy Axe, Good balance and I love the rubber grip
I took the axe with me on a trip doing some forest cleanup along trails. I was concerned when I first saw the axe that it wouldn't fit in the straps on my pack but it was a perfect fit. I'm used to a larger/longer axe so it took a bit of getting used to but once I was used to the weight and balance, it made really quick work of logs into kindling as well as quick and easy branch cutting on the trails. It was warm out while I was hiking and I was sweating so the rubberized hand grip made a huge difference with control. I was disappointed with the axe cover. The top button is fine but EVERY time I wanted to use the axe I struggled to remove the bottom button of the cover. That's a very nuanced issue but I did find myself getting frustrated each time and wishing it had been made in a way that it was a bit easier to get off. All that said, I realize it is brand new leather and after some continued use it will likely become more flexible so the blade doesn't keep catching on the lower button. Overall, this has replaced my old axe and will remain strapped to the side of my pack!
Small but powerful!
The hatchet is powerful and sharp. The colored paint is certainly a matter of taste, but I like it.
Craftsmanship and impressive power
I've owned 3-4 small hatchets over the years, primarily for backpacking and processing small pieces of firewood at home. I've come to appreciate the light weight of fiberglass or composite handles so much that I no longer use any of my wood-handled chopping tools. This hatchet, though, is something I get excited about using. It feels high-quality in your hand. The balance is great and the shape of the head makes splitting and de-limbing easier than my other hatchets. I love the hand-made look, too. I wish the handle were a little bit lighter and more contoured at the grip (which has a great texture), but I can see this becoming my #1 hatchet for one- or two-night trips. It will certainly be my go-to for home use.
Great hatchet, fun to use!
Got to put this hatchet to work clearing out overgrown bamboo. It made quick work with one or two strikes and then stripping the branches was actually enjoyable given the sharpness of the blade. The weighting and balance is perfect for single hand use and I didnt find myself developing any fatigue after clearing out 30-40 tall bamboo shoots. The axe came in a nice sack as well as with a leather sheath/blade guard. It looks great and is a fun tool to use. You can tell it was german engineered. I look forward to using it again soon. I would definitely recommend this tool!
Quality control Issue
First of all, this is getting 3 starts strictly based off the metal quality, and head & beard shape. The problems are all with the handle, this handle isn’t hung well at all, it is has gaps on bottom and the top. The top looks like the wedge was just thrown in and when they went to cut down the top, they did it unevenly and it isn’t protruding enough to prevent slipping. Pros: -very nice head to it, good shape, decent bevel, and a nice beard for a hatchet. -top notch sheath. Very nice leather and sewing job. Only issue I can see happening is potential rust in the buttons, but should be a non issue.
Durable and handy axe
I haven't had a chance to use this on a trail due to our shelter in place, but I've played around with it in my yard. The axe feels durable and is well balanced. The rubberized grip helps since my hands tend to get sweaty and I don't normally carry around gloves. The axe cover is a little difficult to take off and is a little annoying to put back on the axe. The bottom button doesn't come off as smoothly as the top button. Overall, I look forward to taking this on a camping trip and chopping up some firewood.
Perfect Hatchet for Camp
The Rheinland Hatchet is very capable, it's perfect for car camping or keeping at base camp, it can chew threw just about any piece of wood you would expect a hatchet to. It's very well designed and the grip on the handle gives it an extra confidence boost.
Broke on first use cutting wood
Mine broke on the first trip trying to trim some wood bundle we bought from a store.
