Mission Accomplished!

I have tried with various other products over the years to start fire without matches or lighter and have not had any success...until today! Mission Accomplished! This trusty little kit comes with 3 items: high-resin wood for making great kindling, firesteel set for creating the spark, and a handy little firefork for turning any stick into the perfect hotdog roaster! Using a knife I created a bit of kindling, and then got to work with the firesteel. It took about 10 minutes for me to get a spark that actually lit my pile of kindling. However, after that I was able to start my neighbors fire with about 3 strikes. Firm & slow pressure worked best when creating the spark. Starting high on the firesteel and stopping before you get to the end so you don't disturb your pile of kindling! I would hate to be using this in an emergency situation for the first time - definitely give yourself a bit of practice time if you have never used flint successfully before. The firefork was also a handy surprise...one of those things that I had never thought I needed, but moving forward I will not camp without it! Turns any stick into the perfect roasting stick that is sure to keep your hotdog or marshmallow out of the fire!

Amazing fire starting kit

The Light-My-Fire Firelighting kit is just plain awesome. I grew up as a Boy Scout and never used a flint and steel type kit that produces such a reliable and large spark. This easily replaces windproof matches or lighters in your outdoor kit. With a bit of instruction, my 9 year-old son was easily able to start a small fire under less than ideal conditions. What the kit contains: - Fire lighting and sparker unit (held easily in cold conditions, great spark) - Tinder stick (enough fatwood / lighter know to carve off chips to start many fires) - Grandapa's Fire Fork (genius way to attach a sausage to a stick) - Stowage bag The spark reliability of this kit will replace the lighter in my backpacking kit.

Great little kit!

Was super excited about this kit. I love the fire starter flint and tinder stick and have used those a lot in the past. I had never heard of the Grandpa's Fire Fork though and to be honest had no idea how to use it. This does not come with instructions but thank goodness we have the internet and once I figured out what it was and how to use it super fun little tool! One caveat, you must have access to sticks and particularly one that is the right size (or make sure you have a knife to whittle one down to size) but if that can all be arranged it is a really fun addition to s'more making nights! This would be a great stocking stuffer or gift for an avid camper.

Lightweight fire kit

This is a great fire starter kit for camping. While I would normally just use a lighter, I like sustainability of the flint and steel. It took me some practice to get a spark going, but once I did it was easy. The fork is obviously great for roasting marshmallows and hot dogs, but I used it to toast my morning bagel and it worked beautifully!

Fun kit

I'll start this review by saying this is a fun kit for all ages. As an adult you probably think this is more a novelty item than necessity as there are other ways so start a fire faster. For kids this kit can be fun and educational. Have different kids try to start fires with this as a competition.

Didn't Hold up to Wet and Windy Well

I got this produce free to test, and due to the rain in my area, ended up testing it in wet windy conditions. I've used a striker set before with other fire starters, but not when it's wet and windy. Light my fire claims this will work in that condition, but I didn't have much luck with the fat wood. Put the striker stick straight in the fat wood shavings, but they kept blowing around despite measures to prevent it. I think if it had been drier, or less windy, it would have been successful. Striker can double as fat wood shaver which is nice, and it's in a handy bag, so I'll still use the product in more ideal conditions.

Easier to use than I had expected

I had not previously used this type of fire starter. After trying this product I was pleasantly surprised. It is easy to use, and very reliable. After some practice I became quite proficient at starting a fire with it. The Fat Wood helps when sufficiently dry tinder is not readily available. The addition of the "fire fork" was helpful. It is a nice way to hold a stick to roast marshmallows or hotdogs, etc.. The kit comes in a convenient storage bag so all of the items are neatly kept together.

Fire Starter with a bonus

The Light My Fire FireLighting Kit is a great little fire starting kit. I'm not new to using this flint and steel (I've purchased before), and it has always performed well. Easy to spark and use to light gas stoves and with good technique with dry tinder, get a fire going. Since finding good dry tinder can sometimes be difficult, Light My Fire has included a fat wood stick that helps to mitigate that problem. If you've never used fat wood, it's a big time saver when trying to get a fire going. Just to make things a little funner, they've included one of their Grandpa's FireFork. What a neat piece of kit! I doubt I would have searched for something like it, but the fact that they've included it in this kit makes this whole package a home run. The FireFork works great, giving you a roasting fork for hot dogs/sausages/marshmallows...All you need do is find a pinkie finger sized diameter stick for the FireFork to grab a hold of and you're good to go. It even has a protective cap for ends so as not to poke through and damage things in your bag or the bag itself. If you're searching for a fire steel, this is certainly one to put high on your list of considerations.

Nice emergency kit

Comfortable east to spark set. Great for emergencies or tossing the starter in the pack. I'm not sure if I'll use the included wood stick, but its fun to get started and practice. Odd that it includes the marshmellow/hotdog spikes, but they are fun to try.
