Needed a few modifications/upgrades but I'm happy!
I've been riding this bike fo a few month, taken it on everything form smooth roads to dicy single track and I can say with confidence that this bike performs wonderfully, however I did had to adjust the brake alignment (on front and back) and straighten the front rotor from factory (but the rotor bolts were glued on!) and I had to replace the bike cables as they stretched out a lot more that I thought they would for only a few months. I am planning on replacing the tires with some better offload tires (the frame should* fit up to a 47mm). Overall the bike provides a great riding experience, it's comfortable (after you buy a better saddle) and smooth. I would recommend this bike to anyone who wants an entry-level gravel/road bike to take on all their ADVentures!
Highly recommended for the price!
Two rides so far with this bike including a 65 mile, 5K ascent ride along Mulholland and PCH yesterday. Great bike for the price and my first drop bar bike in a while, as I ride mostly mountain and hybrid bikes. Appreciate the brake shifters, which differs this from the ADV 3.1 with its weird 80s throw-back bar end shifters. Good looking bike and very comfortable so it will probably be my main road/light trail bike. One problem I had yesterday was two flats with the factory Kenda tires (it was an all road ride, but these tires seem to attract thorns). The rubber is too soft for our hard So Cal thorns, so I ordered Continental hybrid tires which are more resistent.
Just great
I've been riding this bike for a few weeks now, and I'm very happy with it. This is my first road bike so keep that in mind while reading my review, but the bike is comfortable, the tires inspire confidence when cornering or going over rough terrain. You get plenty of gears both for climbing and speed, and shifting is smooth. The mechanical disk brakes have more than enough stopping power, and are very responsive. The bike is very noticeably lighter than my old steel frame hybrid. The components on the bike might not be the top of the line, but everything works well and I think the bike delivers great value at its price.
Solid bike 👍🏽
Really good bike. I bought it Summer of 2020, so 3 years now. I primarily ride on the road but have had a a couple outings on gravel for about 5-7 miles total distance. Probably have put a couple thousand miles on it so far. Speed isn’t that of a road bike, but it gets the job done for me. Average about 18-20 mph in year 3. Been on a couple 100-mile rides and several 50-70 mile rides. Typical ride is 25. Only one flat so far and that was a slow leak that I discovered while it was in the garage. Definitely happy with the purchase.
Very disappointing bike
I purchased this bike a year and a half ago and have been very disappointed with it. The front gearing is a bad choice because the big gear is larger than normal and the small gear is barely half its size so a shift down requires shifting up in back to minimize the vast difference in gear ratios. Yesterday I had to take the bike in for service because the nail head at the hub on two spokes had sheared off leaving the end hanging. I have been maintaining my own bikes for at least 60 years and I have never had to replace a spoke for any reason other than overtightening at the wheel which stripped the threads. Overall I have not been very happy with this purchase.
Reliable commuter, fun to ride!
The ADV 2.1 is a great bike for commuting in and around Seattle. About a month in to riding my ADV, the chain and derailleurs had stretched and shifted a bit, so the complimentary small adjustments which the REI staff do for new purchases was really appreciated and kept the bike quiet. They made the adjustments within ten minutes of my bringing the bike in! Now that it is raining, I am appreciating the disc brakes and their responsiveness in the wet, and am hoping to keep riding to work throughout the year. I am not the best with working on bikes myself, so I had bike mechanics install my fenders, but the ADV has all the attachments you need for fenders and pannier racks. The ADV rides smoothly and shifts well!
Solid recreational bike.
If you’re looking for a versatile bike the ADV 2.1 is a solid choice. I’ve ridden for 50 years (now in the plus 65 age group) and chose a reliable bike with a company that has a solid maintenance department. I had a road bike previously and wanted a bike that could handle more surfaces (i.e. gravel). I ride maybe 500 miles per year so durability, low maintenance, solid feel, and comfortable ride were all high priority. I no longer ride 25 miles at a time however ride frequently. For the price it’s a bit high but have had it for two years without issue. I’d recommend for recreational use with moderate to intermediate climb. Shifting is fluid, frame is light enough and is stable on the turns.
Commuter
After urban commuting for more than a decade on an ancient road bike, I bought the Adv 2.1 as a replacement. I wanted something faster than a Hybrid bike but still durable for urban commuting and I am loving this bike. The REI shop installed fenders and a rear basket for me.
great bike for a good price
This bike is fun to ride and quite versatile. It’s like a road bike without the annoying minuscule tires that puncture all the time, and can actually go tubeless with a tire change. You can go fast like a road bike but drop a staircase and hit the dirt if you want without worrying that you’re going to break it. XD A lot of ppl say this frame runs on the large end, but idk much about that stuff. I’m 5’7” and love the small I ordered. I got my bike at the flagship in Denver and they did an excellent job setting it up! There’s a bunch of cool people at that shop.
Great budget gravel bike
I got this bike for gravel, I ride some rutted out loose gravel with some steep roads. I am amazed at how nimble , comfortable and capable it is. I had the REI tech mount 45mm riddlers and a head tube raiser to raise handle bars a little to give it a little more of a mountain bike feel. I would have given it a perfect score but the mechanical brakes are not great but good luck finding hydraulic breaks at this price point.
