Doesn’t work for trekking poles

These are great BD quality gear, but they are NOT compatible with hiking poles and that is NOT clear online or in the store. These are for ski poles only. They counter-thread and are different thread size from the trekking poles. Why? Who knows. It would make sense for all the screw-on accessories to be interchangeable across the BD suite. Glad I bought these at REI so I can get my $$ back! For trekking poles to use on snow, you need the product that says “trekking pole basket 60mm”. I have not found it at REI.

Sturdy, easy to put on using moderate effort.

Far easier to put on than those giving low rated reviews and the posted YT videos make these out to be. Perform well, sturdy. Those that state in their reviews these come off likely didn't remove the original small baskets before installing the large snow baskets. The small original basket needs to be pulled downward and unscrewed off the pole. Then the large snow basket is pressed upwards and screwed into place until it disengages from the threads and spins freely on the pole, residing in the smooth notch above the threaded portion of the pole.

Nice baskets and YES they DO fit all BD poles

These absolutely fit BD trekking poles. The many reviews saying otherwise are incorrect. They are on the tight side for BD baskets (I have several pair BD poles in the family gear closet for comparison). You MUST remove old basket by unscrewing counter clockwise while pulling on the basket. Once removed, screw on the new basket while pushing. Simple enough. I have been using BD poles for nearly 20 years and the attachment system has not changed. Once you figure it out, you won't have to again.

Tricky installation

All of the baskets on my old ski poles are press-fitted into various types of plastic or metal holders a couple inches from the bottom of the poles. The holder came off with the old basket on this pole. The hole in the Black Diamond was too large to just slip onto the pole so I was about to cut the old basket from the holder, slip the holder back onto the pole, and see if the BD basket would fit into it. My wife suggested pressing the new BD basket on above the old basket and using them both. The powder has been so deep here I’m thinking 2 baskets might be ideal. We’ll see.

You have to watch a YouTube to attach these correc

I bought these snow baskets and tried to put them on. There are ZERO instructions included with either the poles or the baskets, so I thought, How hard could this be? I screwed them on, went out, and promptly lost one. Bought a new set and decided I needed to figure out what was wrong. I Googled for a video, and there is one where some random guy shows how to do it - and it's not at all what you would think. So, WATCH THE VIDEO before you throw money away.

Expect to replace over and over and over again when they fall off

I've been using BD snow baskets for the last 6 years with two versions of Alpine Carbon Cork trekking poles. I've gone through several replacements, because they continue to fall off in the snow. This is a defective design and I'm tired of it. Just purchased a new pair this week. On my first hike with them today both fell off, despite my continuing to tighten them throughout the hike. I could only retrieve one, and now I'm faced with ordering another pair just a week later and after just one use. A clearly inadequate way to attach baskets that they haven't addressed in at least 6 years and I'm tired of wasting my money on them.

Terrible for Backcountry Skiing

Bought a set of Expedition 3 poles for myself a few years ago for hiking and skiing, and I love them. I liked them so much I bought another set this year for my girlfriend to use hiking and skiing too. We noticed this past week that Black Diamond changed the basket design to this type are not quite strong enough to flip the climbing aids on the heel of her Kingpin bindings with ease. What a pain, looking for something better now

Great If You Have the Right Poles

My partner and I both bought these for our Black Diamond trekking poles. He had a VERY hard time screwing them onto his Trail Backs, while they attached to my Trails super easily. A friend with the Trail Ergo Corks also said that he had no trouble getting his baskets on. So, just be aware that these will be easier or harder to attach depending on which BD poles you have. Once on they worked exactly how they should.

Helps keep Black Diamond poles up in soft snow

I put these on my few years old Black Diamond Trail Back poles and they work as expected when I'm out snowshoeing--kept my poles from going straight through the powder. Installation was a little tricky. It took a little extra oomph to get them on--you have to get the threaded parts of the pole and the basket to meet before screwing them on and it takes some muscle to get there. But once they're on, they aren't coming off on their own. Wouldn't mind it being a little easier to pop these on (and I haven't yet had to take them off), but not inconvenient enough to drop a star.

Make sure to install correctly

Perfectly functional and secure snow baskets if installed correctly. Withholding one star for the lack of installation instructions. At first I thought I had incompatible baskets and had to look at a you tube video to install them. First, the small basket must come off, pull and unscrew simultaneously. Warm up basket and pole threads in hot water and then push with quite a bit of force while screwing on, but make sure your pushing force is close to the shaft so you don't distort or damage baskets. The threads will eventually engage - they are a tight fit - and the basket will screw on past the threads where it can rotate without engaging the threads. No way these can fall off if installed correctly, but better instructions or a link to a video should be included
