Marvelous shelter
I purchased this for car camping with friends. It works great for this. Over a recent weekend we at Assateague Island State Park (MD). There is always a light wind. This shelter was able to shed the wind when other shelters in the campground could not. It also was able to shade most of the group comfortably. I used two extra poles sold by REI that were height adjustable. I used snow stakes for a better bite in the sand.
Terrific in the Arizona Desert
We used our MSR Rendezvous 200 for the first time this weekend, on a three night camping/climbing trip to Cochise Stronghold. The shelter set up quickly. We already had extra poles, which made it possible to get more headroom over a larger area. It was easy to lower parts of the shelter to get maximum shade over the course of the day. Our third night the wind kicked up. But the shelter sheds wind really well. It stayed tight, with no flapping. We were confident that the shelter could handle much worse weather. We were hesitating between the smaller and larger model, and are really glad we got the larger. I pitched it over the bed of our truck--we cook on the tailgate. There was lots of room to lounge underneath. We may pitch our tent under it next time, and leave off the rainfly. It's an expensive purchase, but the quality is apparent out of the box.
Already held up in a major thunderstorm!
I set up the Rendezvous 200 in our backyard to practice for our upcoming 6 week road trip. It was easy to set up. We switched out the cord for cam straps since weight is not an issue on this trip. We had purchased additional poles so we used those. A major thunderstorm, enough to cause localized flooding, rolled through about 30 minutes after we set the tarp up. The tarp was standing and the ground underneath was dry when the storm was over. We are looking forward to using this tarp on our upcoming trip.
Good for occasional use, poor in constant sunlight
We purchased the "Sun Shield" as a more visually-appealing shade over our entry courtyard. Unfortunately, when left in place in direct sunlight, the "Sun Shield" lasted for only one year before becoming uselessly brittle and fragile. We thought the name and marketing implied that we could use it continuously it in the sun. When we submitted it to Cascade Designs for evaluation, they replied that "The condition of your Sun Shield puts it beyond its useful life and out of warranty" and they sent a 30-percent-off credit. (The "Sun Shield" did work just fine as long as we stored it and used it only occasionally. It only became useless after leaving it permanently mounted in direct sunlight.)
great sun/rain protection but stakes need to be improvised
I use this shelter for rafting, it is a life saver in rainy conditions and exposed sun situations. It is made of high quality material and can be configured into shapes and heights to fit your environmental conditions. It is not easy to set up with one person but if you have a group it goes up quickly. Reading other peoples reviews the common theme seems to be the stakes are inadequate and I would second that. To improvise I made 12 inch wooden sand stakes, once these are pounded into the sand the tarp is not moving even on windy days. Sand stakes were made on a table saw using some old wooden flooring.
NEVER MSR
Hello i’m a long date MSR customer who is now speechless…………….. I’m in the outdoors activities roughly since 25 years. I bought 4 years ago an MSR elixir 3 and a MSR Rendezvous 120 wing. Since my purchase i used both products 5 times. I always been really careful of my outdoor gear including my tent and my tarp. I always stored my tent loose, and in a cool, dry space. I’ved never stored my stuff when it was wet or dirty. I carefully stored my gear following my MSR official retailer advice. Moreover, when i bought my tent and my tarp, i called MSR to verified the good way to take care of my new gear. The MSR staff gave me the sames instructions than my retailer. This week i was preparing my gear for camping. When i took my tent and my tarp, both was really sticky and like little bit yellowed. Moreover the seams of the tarp was destroyed……………… From my surprise, i done a lot of research to find what was the issue and if i done something wrong !!!??????? The only thing i found is the fact that it can happened when you don’t store your gear properely. After my research, to understand the problem, i went in 2 differents MSR official retailers stores. In the first store the manager told me that he wasn’t surprised. He told me that he was really discouraged of MSR. He explained me that he saw that problem hundreds of times and he spoke oftently with the canadian rep here about that. He said that MSR is not going to help me and not going to recognized the issue. He told me that compared to other brands (Marmot, Nemo, Big Agnes………….) the MSR polyurethane is problematic. For im the hydrolisis phenomena is normal but not for my gear that «not have been used» and cared properly. He does not recommend MSR anymore. At the second store, the manager wasn’t surprised of the problem. He told me the same things than the manager in the first store. He told that before, MSR was a great brand with good stuff and good warranty\customer care. But since a couple of years he told me that MSR have a lot of constructions issues (polyurethane, hubba hubba seams and poles………..). He do not recommend MSR anymore. He also explain me that before MSR care about there customers (good services, good warranty-repairs, solutions). But according to him now MSR don’t consider the customers and are really not helpful. He doesn’t want to know anything about MSR anymore. After my stores visits i was shocked, traumatized !!!!!!!!!!! I always been a huge fan of MSR and a loyal customer. I also buy a MSR Habitude 4 last week for my family. After my reasearch i returned it to the store yesterday. Yesterday i called the MSR warranty repair service to explain them my situation and the conclusions of my reasearch. The MSR person on the phone just told me it was normal, the warranty is 3 years ( so not for me ) and i have to restore my gear by my own. Period. This is what MSR say : “From the materials in our products to how long we keep the lights on, environmental sustainability runs through MSR in a variety of ways. We realize that every decision we make has a positive or negative environmental impact.” «We build products to last, offering outdoor enthusiasts more adventures and reducing the amount of goods piling up in land lls. Product Durability Our rst priority is to design and manufacture durable, long-lasting products. Extensive testing—both in-house and in the eld—allows us to ensure that our products will stand up to the wear and tear to which our customers subject their gear. Our products have stood the test of time, and we often hear stories from customers who are still using their MSR stoves from the 1980s.We believe in what we make and stand behind it. Worldwide, MSR adheres to the voluntary UIAA standards. The premier international standards for climbing and mountaineering, products that adhere to these standards meet the highest international standards for climbing and mountaineering safety and durability. » «we make sure it is a durable, high- performance material» This is a very nice speech, but its not the reality !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m sure that Larry Penberthy doesn’t agree with the way MSR is doing business these days………. That is sad because like i said i have always done a more than a good promotion of MSR and have been loyal. My conclusion now, i’m going to tell to the outdoor community here and all my outdoor friends (climbers, fly fishers, hikers, bikers, camping budy) that MSR are not what they said. I’m going to tell them, like the 2 managers to the stores i visited, to never buy again MSR stuff. Maybe one day if everybody tell MSR that there is good ways to do business the MSR culture is going to change ? At that moment its going to be a pleasure to deal with MSR again. Best regards
Good and close to great
Used this to stay dry on recent trip. The pros... Easy to set up. The tensioner are great. The storage of line is well designed. The fabric is durable. Room for improvement... Tough to use in the wind. We were camping on gravel bars with few trees. When firmly anchored, it performed well although multiple lines snapped and had to be replaced with paracord. The included stakes did not hold well on gravel bars and had to be supported with big rocks. Even when supported stakes would pull out of gravel. I will be looking for a better way to anchor in gravel and will replace all the lines.
Great protection--rain or shine.
I bought this last year right when the new design came out. I've used it as a base camp at trail races and on multi-day river trips. Using oars, tress, etc. will give you more height when you pitch it. Have not experienced a true high wind situation yet, but so far it appears bomber.
Wing 200 shelter is amazing
I recently purchased the Wing 200 Shelter. i had thought about purchasing the 120 Wing but it was out of stock. The Wing 200 turned out to be the perfect side for my recent car camping/mountain biking trip. The first day it poured down rain and the next 2 it was close to 75 and sunny. Welcome to Spring in Central Oregon. I set up the Wing 200 over out table and it covered that are perfectly, giving us enough rain perfection the first day and sun protection the other days. This was easy to set up, great coverage and we stayed dry and protected from the sun...all in the same trip!!!
Solid Construction...
The included poles measure 7’-7”, are not adjustable, but come in their own stuff-sack. There are seven stakes included in their own sack, as well. I initially believed that guy-lines were not included, but discovered that each guy-line is cleverly tied to each corner and stored in an attached pouch with a Velcro closure.
