I highly recommend anyone interested in purchasing a pack for backpacking to go to the store and try them on with weights. I tried on other brands, but the Gregory Jade 63 fit me perfectly. I'm 5'1". This pack didn't have a high frame, whereas other packs did which was uncomfortable and forced my head forward. I took this on my 1st backpacking trip ever to Havasupai. I hiked in and out with about 25-27 lbs in the pack. When packed correctly, there's plenty of room in the bag. I really liked the outer pocket for quick access and the stretchable mesh side pockets which made it easy to fit my 1L Nalgene bottle. The shoulder straps and hip belt were comfortable throughout the hike. For me, this pack was perfect and I am happy with my purchase. I'd highly recommend this pack to anyone.
Admittedly, this is my first "nice" backpacking pack purchase, but I feel like I really lucked out and recommend this product for smaller framed bodies. For reference I am 5'2 135 pounds and purchased the XS/S. On our latest adventure we backpacked 4 nights/5 days at most my pack weighed 30-35 lbs. After dialing in on tightening the straps I did not have any pain points. The pack did get "creaky" noises that I could not figure out, but this doesn't change how happy I am about the bag overall.
I have had this pack for a little over a year now, and used it on several backpacking trips. I usually put 30-40 lbs of gear in it and it is so comfortable! It fits everything I want it to, and I love the super stretchy side pockets. I have fluctuated in weight while I have this pack and it’s made me appreciate the highly adjustable hip straps. I have not experienced any bruising due to the straps. The one issue I have is that I picked it up for a trip a few days ago, and the chest strap snapped where it was fixed to the pack. The trip still wasn’t bad because the hip strap is great, but I’m now having to replace a strap I didn’t think I’d have to replace for several years.
I purchased this backpack after a long search. It checked all the boxes - lightweight, comfortable, versatile pockets/attachment points, capacity, and color scheme (let's be honest - color is a factor!). I've taken it on two trips, and during both I found that the pack was incredibly creaky. One was a solo trip, and a fellow hiker asked if he could help me readjust the pack because it was bothering HIM too. I accepted, but we couldn't find a solution. I may have a faulty one, but the noise is coming from the internal frame near the top. Back it goes..
This pack holds up great in all sorts of weather. Even the rain cover is extremely effective. The hip belt is innovative and i didnt have any discomfort (and i have wide, boney hips). I do wish that I would have gotten the xs/sm instead of the sm/med, as my hips are high and i have to tighten the straps to the limit for the pack to keep from moving; I recommend trying it out in stores if you are on the cusp of the sizes like me. The only feedback I have is that I wish there were more places to hook things onto, particularly in the arm straps, and smart phones of a normal size are snug in the hip pockets. If you take a lot of pictures or want quick access to your phone, they're not the best.
I am a huge Gregory fangirl! Everyone's body is different, but for me their packs are absolutely the most comfortable. The FreeFloat suspension helps your pack feels lighter, and the frame of pack keeps everything stable - pack doesn't feel "swingy." Overall every part of their packs feel extremely high quality and have held up well for me. It feels like they've thought through everything that could make the pack better and more helpful, right down to small things like the sunglass-keeper. I don't work at REI, but when I was there the other day I was showing someone the sunglasses loops because I love that feature so much!
As a Ranger for the Dyrt, i get to demo awesome gear on occasion! This pack was perfect for myGrand Teton Summit trip! I was trying to cut weight as the trek up Garnet Canyon is rugged. This pack is one of the lightest options with this capacity on the market! It is 3.51 pounds. It is very comfortable, by far the most comfortable fitting pack I have used. And comfort is super important in the backcountry. The back mesh panel helped ventilate my back. I loaded this pack to its maximum 40 pound capacity. I had all the backcountry gear as well as climbing gear and a 60 m rope. I still felt stable as I crossed varied terrain. The large boulder fields had me nervous in a few spots and I considered removing my pack to cross, but made it unscathed. The materials used in the pack are very durable. Not a single tear or visible abrasions, quite dirty post trip, but no permanent scars! The hip belt pockets were great! They were easy to access while wearing and there is plenty of room for phone, snacks, chapstick, and any other small items you need handy. The stretch mesh water bottle pockets are huge and are an awesome feature the way the have dual openings. It was easy to access my Nalgene bottle when I used the forward facing opening. However as I was crossing a boulder field and needed to bend way forward it did fall out. I placed it in the upright opening when crossing terrain that required less then upright posture. The drawstring opening is huge and there is also a u-shaped zippered access to the main compartment on the front of the pack. I made sure items like my water filter and first aid kit were right there for easy access if/when needed. The stretch mesh panel on the back of the pack was an easy stow for my rain gear if needed in a hurry. The top compartment houses the rain cover for the pack and also has a lot of room for storing small items. There are straps galore for holding trekking poles, securing climbing rope, even a sunglass QuickStow that I used often as my glasses were on and off all day long. It was nice knowing they were secure and not going to fall off the top of my head. Post trip, yes I was sore and exhausted, but no rubbing or discomfort caused by the Jade pack! Very impressed with this product and can’t wait for my next backpacking adventure!
I tried on 8 packs in REI before settling on this one. This was literally the only pack that didn't pinch my lower back or hit me in the head. I've now used it about 5 times and it's been comfortable and easy to organize all of my things. I'm 5'6 and 135 lbs with a short-ish torso and this has worked great for me. I generally use on 2-4 day trips and this thing has worked perfectly.
I’m oddly proportioned and finding a pack that suits me has proven tricky. I’m not sure this pack is for everyone, which is why I gave it an 8/10 for recommendation but I am tall with very wide hips and a large chest but also wider shoulders and this pack sits comfortably even when packed extra full of client’s gear. I love all of the access zippers, the subtle color combos and the weight distribution draws were in the perfect spots.
This was the only pack that fit my back properly and I loved it. A little sad that it didn't have a ton of exterior pockets.. but I got it anyways. The functionality of the side/ water bottle pockets are not great.. I had things falling out of them a lot. There is a secondary hole to the pocket which didn't make a lot of sense. Additionally, I couldn't zip up my hip belt pocket by myself when I had the pack on.. Very frustrating for my partner and I.
