Huge disappointment
I tried the Dakine DLX Curve in hopes it would cure the problem all the other tailgate pads have: none of them fit the curved tailgate of my 2019 Ram 1500 well. So the DLX Curve should, right? That’s what the Dakine website says. It does not. There is barely a curve to it, and the width of the top portion is pretty uniform, i.e. it rectangular. Shouldn’t it have a curve, line the name suggests? In addition, the pad is very basic. It costs more than the Raceface pad, and it’s... well, a lot less. On the plus side, the flap is nice and large and doesn’t block my backup camera, and even has a cool hook to keep it in the open position. But the “curve” is a fail.
Best option for wider tailgates
Good fit on 2020 Ram 1500. I tried 2-3 other brands, but as most Ram owners know the tailgate is pretty wide (8-9 inches). This makes most tailgate pads incompatible. The Dakine DLX has a 10” wide middle section that accommodates the wider tailgate. It does have a gap on each end as the Ram tailgate tapers on the edges but not a big deal. The DLX also has a nice feature other pads do not, which is a reinforced tail for each strap. This makes putting the pad on solo a breeze as you can feed the tail up through the gap in the tailgate and grab it, while supporting the tailgate at a 45. Materials, buckles and features are overall very good.
Does the Job on 2019 Ford F150
Had the pad for about a month now. Used a couple dozen times. Fits great on my 2019 F150. Protects both the bikes and the truck nicely. I’ve only carried two bikes so far, and the straps have held them nicely in place. Well designed flap for the backup camera secures both in the open and closed positions — it’s a nice touch. I docked a star because of the anti-theft feature. It’s a metal grommet through which you can pass a looped cable to secure to the truck...which I did. When I pulled the loop through, the grommet came with it. I was able to work it back onto the pad, but it could have been designed better/stronger. Will still do the job in preventing someone without tools from stealing the pad. Would definitely buy again.
Easy and perfect fit!
Installed in under 10 minutes with only one person. Fit my '18 F150 perfect. Pad doesn't cover whole tailgate (where F-150 imprint is on tailgate) but covers all the parts that bike would contact. "Hidden" straps for tie down on inside of bed provide much cleaner look than some others that put them on top. Convenient strap attachment for keeping tailgate handle free and backup cam clear.
Space Saver
Made hauling family’s bikes camping easy. Fit perfectly on my 2018 F150 and am able to use my backup camera. Needs to be attached very snug to still see my hitch when grabbing my camper.
Poor fit
Despite this being designed specifically for Dodge and Ford pickups with the curved tailgate, it fit very poorly. The portion that goes over the top of the tailgate was way too long and there was a lot of open space under the ends and in the middle. Because of all this extra material, the 29" bike I was using to test didn't really sit well. It could be attached to the tailgate but that's the best you can say for it in terms of fit. Looking at pictures of these online, some fit so well and some so poorly that I wonder if Dakine has changed the design. If so, it was not changed for the better. No comments on the quality of the hardware because it was not acceptable for use on my vehicle. Returned it, gone back to using a moving blanket. The reason we purchased it from REI in the first place was the ease of returns to our local store, so props for that! Tested on a 2010 Dodge 2500.
Not worth it!
Piece of Carp! (yes it's spelled wrong so karen wont delete the post) Royal Pain in the A to take on and off. I guess if you want to leave it on and let it flap around and rub the paint off of your tailgate it would be ok. Get yourself a big piece of foam and strap your bike down. Save the $ ... it's not worth it.
Works great on my 2018 Ram 1500. I've used it with 3 bikes for a year now and had no issues. 29" mountain, 26" kids bike and hybrids all work.
