BioLite Portable Fire Pit /Grill
I recently purchased this fire pit for my remote cabin. I love the portability and would recommend the solar carry case. Produces nice fire that can be seen through the screen sides. Nice grilling option and charging station. We didn’t think we would use the app, but found it to be a great way to check the battery level. Overall very happy with this purchase!
Enjoying it so far.
Love this so far! Less is more when it comes to burning. Grilling has been awesome! Worried about the battery only due to things I’ve heard, but we will see. It would be nice to have a secondary battery that can be purchased as an accessory.
Our new patio fire pit
I was late getting to the Kickstarter Party (it was actually difficult for me to put the $$ out there and wait for about a year until I would have received the BioLite FP. When Aust 2018 rolled through I remembered that date from Kickstarter. Our REI had one in stock and we love it on our patio. Battery pack (fan) fits snug. Easier for me to attach it with hingne in open position. We’ve used it a few times in the past month. Less (to no) smoke when fan is at a higher speed. Kids enjoy the tech of using a mobile device to control fan speed. I’m excited to take it to baseball games for dogs/burgers/chicken. It always burned the wood to ashes. It does cool quickly after fire has burned out.
Great for cooking
I've been eyeballing this fire pit for over a year; reading reviews online and watching videos. I decided to take a chance on it, since I could use my additional 20% on an items for being a Rei member - for their annual sale. I used this for camping [car camping] in Northern Michigan (Interlochen,MI) for two nights. I was surprised at how fast the fire was able to start and at the speed to which it started becoming a blaze. Cooking on it was a breeze. Plenty of room for a full sized iron skillet and more. After cooking, we were able to turn the fan speed low and make smores. The only drawback to this product, is that it doesn't produce enough heat to keep physically warm. We had to sit inches from it to be able to feel somewhat warm. it was probably only mid-40's. Most of the heat is coming from the top (going straight up), not radiating. Set up, break down and clean up were simple. Not entirely smokeless, unless fan speed on high and no wood blocking the jets (which is somewhat hard to accomplish). Watch the video for how to go about doing it on the BioLite website. Overall, a good product! Definitely, a great add to my camping supplies.
Perfect for a backyard fire!
The BioLite FirePit is perfect for backyard hangs, camp trips, grilling in the outdoors, and when there are fire restrictions. I have already gotten so much use out of this piece of gear, and I’m sure I will continue to use it throughout the summer. The ease of use and efficiency is hard to pass up and it’s way easier to “have a quick fire” with the BioLite FirePit. I am disappointed not to see it charge the fans with heat, like other BioLite products, but understand it was to keep the price point reasonable. Having the fans to control the smoke and intensity of the fire is well worth the trade-off of charging it with solar. I look forward to many evening fires and roasted marshmallows to come.
Bottom Air Tube
The bottom air tube has come detached from the front of the unit making it useless. It seems the fire pit has expanded and pulled it out of its place. Doesn’t look like anything is welded let alone tacked. Used 4 times.

Solo vs BioLite
A buddy and I recently pitted (Ha! Campfire pun!) the solo stove vs the BioLite. It's not a totally fair comparison given the price difference. But our main goals were to see which was more "smokeless" and/or produced the best heat efficiency. Solo Stove won on both metrics. I personally don't feel that the BioLite delivered on any of it's claims. It took about 5 minutes to get the kindling started and another 3-5 minutes to add logs. Not bad, but not the 30 seconds they claim. Also, as you can see in the photo, it is not smokeless. The only time it was truly smokeless was with the fan at maximum. Then there is the fan noise. It over powered the calming sounds of the camp fire. Those three issues lead me to need to return BioLite.
Amazing little fire “pit”
Though it’s not really a pit is it? I mean it sits on those little legs. I bought mine used at a REI garage sale for half price. Prior owner could not figure out how to use it, I dunno. Making a fire smoke free is a tall order when you’re burning wood and what not but this does a pretty good job of it. Pros: - the 360 mesh view lets everyone around enjoy - the battery pack lasts a LONG time. You could run this several nights on medium speed with periods at high or max to get it going and be good. - carrying handles mean that if you do have to move it while it’s still hot you can. - fire burns bright and hot. On max it looks like a blast furnace and burns incredibly clean. - you can run it with your phone or without. - cooking on the top is pretty easy due to the heat it provides and the little sliding grill top. Cons: - you’re gonna go through A LOT of wood with this baby. It burns hot and fast with the fan running which is to be expected but was still a surprise. Whatever you think you’d need for a small camp fire bring at least 2x as much. - fan noise can be an issue with some people I guess. When it’s at medium you can barely hear it, on max it’s there. - sometimes you’ll get a vibration rattle while using it due to the fan. Just give it a tap with your foot. This thing is a car camper’s dream. It leaves hardly any wood or ash, after running about 20 pieces of wood through it I had about two cups of ash or less in the bottom. Probably less. Much different than the average campsite fire experience. Note: a friend tried to burn a fire-log in his. Seems that due to whatever unholy concoction those are made out of the increased airflow and subsequent rise in temps made that evil thing smoke MORE. We thought we were gonna pull a fast one and have an all-night fire that we did not have to tend. Nope. I guess you can use those logs normally but when we turned up the fan it was like a coal plant over the stove.
Rusted after being stored in my garage for 6mos
I bought this item in August of 2019 from REI. Upon receipt of the FirePit, I was super happy with the product I received. Sure, it didn't create 100% smokeless flame...but I never expected that. It successfully minimized the amount of smoke put out by the wood, which was great! It folded very compact, the fan system served its purpose, and I had a really great firepit to take on adventures. Initially I was very happy with the unit! That is...until I brought it out last May (after ~9 months ownership) to get ready for a trip. After storing in the garage in a very moisture-free area, I took off the cover to find the unit had rusted over. I have to say that I'm pretty shocked about how poorly the FirePit held up. I even thought I might've had a leak in my garage, but after looking at other similar reviews, it looked like I certainly wasn't the only one. After talking with Customer Service, I was only offered a high-temp paint touch up kit. I'm pretty bummed by this "solution" since had I known what was going to happen, I would've just gone and bought a much cheaper firepit from Lowe's or Home Depot. Hopefully they either improve the quality of the product moving forward, or offer better solutions to customers who went out of their way to spend a good chunk of money on this fire only to have it rust on them when stored in proper conditions.
Great campfire!
I love this fireplace! I’ve used it several times this summer. I’ve used it with charcoal during a snow storm when the wood was wet and it created a great fire. Usually I start with pine needles and clean up forest litter. The fan is awesome and truly keeps it from smoking once started. My only complaint is that you cannot use water to put out your fire. After 20 years in scouting that is hard for me. I’d like to see them include a piece of material that the sides are maid out of to place on top when you’re ready to shut it down. You have to sit with as it burns out. The battery hasn’t gone below the first setting after one or two campfires.
