fast rolling, but impossible to seal
this isn’t a “i can’t get the bead to seat” situation… though some careful work with a razor blade to smooth out the casting is a good idea. my issue is with the sidewalls. i’d expect this from a hyper thin / crazy supple tire,,,, but 3 months later my sidewalls are still seeping sealant. it’s like they’re made of (i’m exaggerating) cheesecloth. i’ve managed to get one successful ride on this bike and had to stop to add air multiple times in 35 miles… despite many weeks of letting the tires rest (on each side to get the sealant everywhere it needed to go) post install. unfortunately I will be returning this set as they're unusable. i’m sure they’re “great” if you run them with tubes.
Flats and more flats
I would not recommend these tires. I have them set up tubeless with Stan’s sealant and have commuted to work three times (total of 60 miles) experiencing two flats. First the front then the back. The front now has a Stan’s dart and I replaced the back with third byway tire I bought as a replacement for when they wore out. 60 miles on mixed surface is a very short lifespan for any tire.
1800 Miles
I've used these tires on my Salsa Journeyman for my commute and light gravel grinding on the weekends. I havent had many complaints with the rides until the last 300 miles. They have been wrought with punctures and flats on my rear wheel(3 flats in less than two weeks) Have I reached the life of the tire? The tread appears fine, no cracks or other visible wear. I cleaned the inner portion thoroughly before replacing the inner tube. I've also noticed the rear tire has been slipping more frequently even on the road surfaces when under load either braking or pedaling. Should I swap the front and rear tires or has the tire reached its life expectancy?
Paved and dirt road roller
Nice compromise for a gravel/road set up. We live in Vermont with lots of dirt roads. Plenty of size and tracrion on the gravel, with a smooth roll on the pavement in between
love my Byways
I have had these tires for 2 years and have put over 2000 miles on them. I ride 70% trail/path/gravel and 30% road. I have had two flats and I feel that's a pretty good rate. I do notice that these tires are rated up to 50 psi 650b/47 and the only time I had issues with flats was by taking them to their max. These tires can fly on pavement surprisingly well. Did a multi day road tour and they never dragged. These do not have super aggressive tread obviously, but do well in dry off road conditions. I would not expect them to perform well on gnarl, but you're not planning to tackle that either if you're looking at these. Overall my go to option for anything not muddy rooty baby heady filled trail.
WTB Byway
I bought these to put on my hardtail to make the bike more of a gravel bike. I’m using tubes with them. They look sweet and are much faster than my old 29er tires.
2 punctures and a factory defect within 3 weeks
Bought a brand new set of these about 4 weeks ago. One of the tires had a factory deformity (big bubble formed on the tred, made me think my wheel came out of true) so I returned it for a new tire. A week later I took these on some relatively light gravel terrain and they punctured very quickly. The puncture was big enough it called for another tire. 1 week after that I had yet another puncture on some very light gravel terrain. After 2 punctures and a factory defect I am moving onto another model tire. While I really enjoy the feel of the slick center and the traction is very good, the strength of these Byways just dont hold up if you're looking to put them through even the lightest gravel grinder.
Fave Gravel Tire
Awesome tires for gravel, hardpack, and pavement. I’ve ridden a thousand miles on these with no issues. Of that, half was on gravel. Tougher than my MTB Racing Ralph tires, I have not had a single puncture. Run about 40 PSI, and the ride is comfy...less fatigue on 4+ hour rides. Fast rolling. Only downside is poor grip in wet/mud, but I knew that. I won’t go back to skinny tires, and even bought these for wife’s Slate.
700 x 40 Byway
These tires fit my needs exactly. I purchased the 700 x 40 to replace 42 Resolutes. I am riding more asphalt right now and these are perfect. They are not quite as capable or comfy on long rough gravel stretches, but feel more sure and quick on pavement. Not quite measuring up to 40 as installed, Resolutes were true 42 if not wider. I run both tubeless in the range of 32 to 38 psi on 20mm rims. Sidewalls are a little darker brown and seem a thicker rubber than the fabric feel of the Resolutes. I have had very good experiences with many WTB tires.
good tire
I have the 700x44c version of this tire for my road/cross/touring bike. Although the tread pattern is great and the tire rolls well and does well on gravel, this tire and many WTB tires severely lack puncture protection. On 3 out of 4 rides with these tires i've had 3 flats, which came from the dreaded thorns of course. I wouldnt expect this tire to hold up to the constant rigors of urban and gravel touring for long. I would love to say this is a great tire but until WTB offers some sort of puncture protection on their tires I can only say these tires are OK.
