Alpine Pro?
I had high expectations for my first pair of Hestra mittens....threading on palm joint was disintegrating after two days skiing and had to return. I’m hoping to give Hestra another try, but this was very disappointing for $165 “Extreme” mittens. Heli Ski model seems to be more proven (and they don’t have a vulnerable threaded joint right in the palm where your grip is!!)
Warm hands in negative temps
Purchased these for skiing in Canada. My go numb when it's in the thirties and I'm wearing good ski gloves, so I was concerned about the negative temps in Tremblant. I wore these plus a Burton liner and felt 90% comfortable the whole time. They're a little bulky, but the handcuff bands + the liners made it easy to take them off, adjust zippers and goggles, and get back to skiing without frostbitten fingers. Thrilled to finally have warm hands!
Not as warm as I had hoped
I thought that by paying $170 for a pair of mittens that they would be super warm, but I am somewhat disappointed. My thumbs got cold after 15 minutes in 17 degree weather. Another time my hands got cold when I was using my walking poles. I know that when gripping walking poles or ski poles, it can make the hands colder faster, but that's why I wanted super warm mittens. They didn't do much better than mittens that I have that were half the price. They're ok, but not as warm as I had hoped for the price.
Great gloves, worth the money
"Hestra gloves are great" (to quote two other family members) and hopefully they are as durable as they are warm! I plan to buy new liners when the ones inside these gloves pack out and stop insulating well. My hands have been cold while skiing using other, expensive brand name ski gloves that have a waterproof, breathable fabric membrane. These older gloves, that I'll put aside for Spring skiing, did a great job keeping my hands dry, just not keeping them warm even with hand warmers placed inside and with thin liners. These gloves work without liners or hand warmers.
Quality Materials/Workmanship = Warmth/Durability
These mittens, (with liners) keep my fingers warm hour after hour at 0° and below. Dexterity for a mitt is good, the thumb is well designed and they are supple, not stiff, bulky or squirmy. Materials and construction are top notch. The interior of the liner is open (no inner finger glove to will limit functionality). The cuff is wide and will accommodate a bulky sleeve. This makes the glove look a little like an expedition glove, but I understand why it is made this way. I have a long hand and long fingers, but size 10 was perfect for me - no extra length at the tip of the thumb while the hand fits comfortably in the the mitt, so the fit is larger than usual. I wear a variety of liners and they fit well within the mitt. The wrist retainer is detachable and the liner is easily removed from the shell for drying or the occasional wash. For years I relied on lighter mitts with chemical hand warmers for those colder days, now I just wear the right equipment for the temperature without worry and I am delighted with these mitts.
Warmest mittens ever
I used to wear gloves, mittens, and hand warmers inside my mittens when I ski in really cold temperatures. These mittens are the warmest, coziests mittens I’ve ever put my hand in. I’m super stoked to ski without the extra bulk of gloves and hand warmers! These mittens keep my hands warm and dry even in the coldest temps.
Very wary and durable mittens
The mittens are extremely warm and were utilized for skiing in 0 F and below. Never had cold hands or fingers. Mittens are a bit bulky, but that is the price to pay for warmth. Very high quality construction with leather on wear surfaces. Great product.
Awesome for Colorado
I sounds ridiculous, but my hands run cold, and I needed these just for snow shoveling and walking around in Colorado. We've had a very cold winter with temps below zero, and these gloves are really keeping up. My only complaint is they are not intensely waterproof. If you're just playing around in dry powder they're great. If you need a glove with an absolutely waterproof shell, you might want something else.
Really warm
My hands get cold easily when I’m not exercising hard. These mittens are perfect for walking or standing in cold conditions. Watched the 4 year old sled in 25 degrees with 40 mph wind and my hands stayed warm. Also, these are not so large and bulky that it is still possible to have some manual dexterity. Expensive, but worth the price.
Simply Awesome.
I have big hands and (6'4" 270bs.) and it was refreshing to find gloves that fit. I"ll only buy Hestra glove henceforward.
