No More Cold Hands
My fingers get cold very easily. I tried many gloves before these were recommended to me. I was hesitant, but bought them anyway. Glad I did cause these are super gloves. I wear them when hiking every cold morning with my dog; throwing snowballs for my dogs; shoveling snow; scraping snow off the truck windshield. My hands stay warm. Surprisingly dextrous. I dropped my keys on the icy snow and was able to pick them up. The liners are super cozy and nice against my hands. And, they velcro in place so the gloves easily come off with the liner staying put. Carabiner is nice; I can hook the gloves to my beltloop as the temperature goes up and I no longer need to wear them.
Weak leather
I used them for backcountry snowboarding for about one full season and went out about every week on average. The leather peels off and sticks to skins almost immediately, the fingers where I clear snow off splitboard connections developed a small hole in leather, and edges of board easily cuts into palm if you have to carry board. I had cheaper OR gloves for 4 seasons and they looked better than one season of huestra. They are very warm for temps in single digits although the pointer finger gets cold at times. Great dexterity and compacted well in bag but don’t last at all for such a high price. I returned them.
Initial thoughts
I have worn these gloves a 1/2 dozen times since purchase. The weather being a low of about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Hands have stayed warm than with other gloves that I own. Index finger does get a bit cold. I have found there is enough room in the 3 finger box to easily put index finger and use as a mitten for extra warmth. After reading reviews I was worried about the quality. I haven't put them through the test yet to rate the long term quality but for now seam hood.
Finally, gloves that keep you warm
My fingers are always cold when I walk or hike when the temperatures drop outside. I have different gloves including vortex outers with an inner glove but none were keeping my fingers comfortable after 30 minutes outside. I literally read reviews on every four star or higher rated glove on REI’s website and concluded these gloves would offer the best chance of staying comfortable vice having to put my gloved hands in my coat pockets in a futile attempt to be comfortable. I could not have been more satisfied - they are very comfortable and keep all of my fingers warm enough to walk or hike outside in the coldest weather - we were experiencing extraordinarily cold temps in February in OK. Well worth the cost.
Cold finger
These were very soft and I loved the idea of the dexterity having a single finger and thumb to zip ski coats up and other tasks but after a day at one of our Utah resorts my single finger was frozen while everything else was toasty warm. I ended up exchanging these for a pair of the regular mittens and love them.
Not for cold hands
I have cold hands and decided to purchase new gloves with a budget of $200. I ski mostly Utah and after forum reviews and speaking with staff at REI, I settled on 3 finger Hestra gloves. Well, at 0 to 3 degree weather and winds 15 to 30 miles on lifts there not windproof, waterproof and index finger got cold and I used the mitten. I did waterproof them as suggested on the tag with lube the gloves came with. The leather is so soft I was afraid to pick up ski's to not rip them. Made great for snow balls and cold weather without winds. I am thinking either a mitten or outdoor research gloves made with gore tex wind proof instead.
Warm and practical
Before these, I was a five-finger gloves guy. I have poor circulation - the tips of my fingers often go numb even when the temperature is only at 35 Fahrenheit or so. But I hate mittens, because I like to be able adjust my boot bindings, helmet, jacket zippers, etc. while skiing. These have kept my fingers warm down to 10 Fahrenheit and, based on how warm my hands felt, I expect they would keep them warm at even lower temps than that. At the same time, the lobster claw design makes it so that I can easily adjust my gear when I’m on the mountain. Absolutely worth the money. One note: definitely try them on in person if you can, or order multiple sizes. I’ve found that glove sizing is an inexact science, especially when transitioning between five-finger, mittens, and three-finger designs.
Very warm under all conditions
These are amazing. I taught skiing outside all day, in all conditions including pouring rain. My hands stayed dry and warm. They are quite soft on the inside. The dexterity is great - no problem holding on to ples, whether it be treking, ski, or nordic ski poles. I bought a size 9, I am female, weight 130, height 5 7. They fit great with a bit of space so my hands don't feel crowded. I don't wear a glove liner with these, it might be a bit crowded with a glove liner so plan accordingly.
Fantastic, but Tricky Fit
I've used these for a couple of years now, have severely abused them, and absolutely love them. I've never had an issue with cold hands when wearing these, and have used them in temps down to -20F. They definitely aren't suitable for nimble tasks, but I can at least manage to set up my tent and handle most camp chores while wearing them. I often just use the liners while backpacking when my hands get too warm but it's too cold for the other (North Face) liners I use. These are quite waterproof, which is great for when a wintry mix rolls in or I'm scooping snow out from around my tent. Durability has been great, and there was no long term negative impact when I had a fuel stove malfunction and they got soaked with white gas. One issue though is with sizing. I followed the sizing instructions to the letter but they are just a tad too large. I don't have baby hands or anything, so not sure what's up with that. Just keep in mind you might need to buy two pairs and return one.
Hestras or Frostbite
I have two pairs, these and the Fall Line, both are the “Ninja Turtle” config. and I have used them in every type of cold weather imaginable. I’ve used them on Cotopaxi and Rainier to the backcountry of the Rockies. The liners come out to be washed and the leather, if taken care of, will take care of you. Buy once, cry once.
