Not a fan
I am a huge Keen fan and had reasonably high expectations for these boots since we own several different styles within my family. I've bought my daughter the Newport H2 sandals (which we LOVE) every Summer since she was born, and for her 3rd birthday we decided to gift her with her 1st pair of hiking boots. We hike at least 8 miles a week. Sometimes i wear her in a carrier, but over the past few months she's been walking a couple of miles on the trails on her own. We both have Keen hiking boots and I love matching with my toddler! But I noticed we had identical scabs in the same place on our right ankle. Then my daughter started complaining more about her ankle hurting. I realized that it was our hiking boots that were rubbing in the exact same spot on our ankles. It seems to really cause her discomfort, so unfortunately we will need to return her boots and find something else that works.
Nice boots for winter and hiking
My boy’s favorite winter shoes
Hit and miss
I bought 3 pairs for each of our kids and two of them like the boots. They are pretty hard to get on but have good support once on. Like others have mentioned the Velcro closure seems to be a bizarre size that isn’t nearly long enough on our smallest pair but ok on the bigger sizes. My biggest gripe and the reason for the 3 stars is that there is a giant seam in the toe area. It doesnt seem to bother our littler kids but it causes a huge pressure point on our oldest and hurts her when she walks. We’ll have to find something with a better seam layout for her.
Lace strap broke
I was super bummed that the strap holding the lace that goes around the heal broke
Too difficult to get into - but well made
The whole family wears Keens but this year we've had issues with two new designs - both the kids Lumi boot - totally sweaty and wouldn't dry even with inserts out nightly. And now these new Targhee's that have a much more narrow entry and the laces are too short so that the release mechanism doesn't release enough to open the large tongue for the boot. They are a 1/2 size too big for my daughter and I don't think she'll be able to get into them when they should actually fit next fall. The design is quite different than previous little kid Targee and I think you need to do more testing with Kids actually using these shoes.
Laces broke as soon as we got them home
My wife and I were reluctant to buy these for our daughter because we'd had problem with the laces before, but we were assured by REI employees that these were completely redesigned and didn't fall apart. Unfortunately the laces now fall apart even faster, we barely got a day of use of them before we had to take them back.
Nice shoe - 1 big flaw, velcro strap doesn't hold
We wanted to love these and have been big KEEN supporters but this shoe just didn't work out and will be returning them. The biggest issue is that the velcro strap at the top which provides all the ankle support comes unstrapped anytime you lean forward in the shoe (ex hiking up hill). This really diminishes the functionality of the shoe. Otherwise it's a great shoe, comfortable, pretty waterproof and lots of grip while still being flexible.
Bulky seam at heel means blisters
As others have reported, there is a strong chance these boots will cause blisters. There is a thick seam down the back of the ankle that will rub unless thick wool socks are worn. Disappointing and not what we’ve come to expect from Keen.
Annoying to put on kids
I bought a pair for my 3yo son and I’m taking them back after wearing them once. The ankle strap is a huge pain to adjust because the buckle for the strap is too tight to move past the Velcro. This makes the already too narrow opening a nightmare to get a kids foot into. I honestly don’t know how they didn’t realize that this was a problem because it’s an obvious design flaw.
Doesn't seem to have much thought put into it
The bungee laces don't work too well for kids shoes as when they have a tightness on the foot the shoe doesn't slide on and off. Being these are hiking boots, they need to fit snug which means the cords need to be adjusted for use and they stretch out easily. The Velcro strap on top leaves a lot of strap hanging off when pulled down to hold a foot in place for hiking also. I do not think they spent any time actually designing a hiking boot for a kid, but rather just making an adult one smaller.
