How to fix the taste

Great product, light and innovative. I tested the negative reviews about bad taste and smell and those people were totally right! There is a way to fix it. First wash with dish soap. Then add about a table spoon of baking soda and water until full, let sit for three days. Drain, rinse and repeat. Took me two cycles but now the bad taste is gone. Hope this helps!

Product should be discontinued

This product makes the water taste so bad that you can’t drink it. And this is not a minor taste problem. I tried washing it with dish soap and there was no improvement in the taste. The water tastes just like the product’s material smells. So I returned it for a refund. Never before had I bought a product at REI that was unusable. This product should be dropped from inventory.

Convenient and Sturdy

This water bottle is amazing!!! The seal is totally water proof as long as you securely put on the cap. I have been using it regularly for 4 months straight and there has been no wear and tear on the plastic. Not only great for outdoor activities, also a wonderful TSA water bottle work around when flying. When empty the water bottle is very thin and can easily be place in your carry on and you can fill it with water when you get through airport security. I did not experience any weird taste, but I always thoroughly wash anything I purchase from the store particularly plastic products. We like this product so much we are buying one for each member of our family.

Easy Peasy Squeezy Bottle

I have owned many, many water bottles. I have owned ones that leak when tipped in their side, ones that are bulky and heavy even when empty, ones that make your water taste like plastic. This one is is none of those things. It is pretty much perfect actually. I’ve brought it backpacking, through airport security and customs, on international flights, on day trips and used it at home. It is amazing and has been a great companion on all of these adventures. It is light, easy to drink out of, the nozzle has never leaked, the initial ‘new bottle smell/taste’ went away after a good rinse. I love it, so does my husband. Highly recommend!

Lighter Pack

HydraPak makes an excellent water bottle with the Stow product. It's great because it is light, easy to pack, and does not taste like plastic. I'm not sure what all these other reviews are trying to get at with the taste complaints. This is a plastic product. It is not stemware. Naturally it may take a couple uses to remove any artificial taste. I must have been lucky, because mine tasted fine on the first use. But, then again being realistic when using camping products is not a forte of all these new REI members. Bring back the old ways REI. Return to being an outfitter and not an outdoor Walmart.

Insanely versatile

First, in regards to the taste, yes there is some initially. I wouldn't call it excessive, but to each their own. It goes away after a handful of uses/washing, and you can accelerate that process by squeezing some fresh lemon into it, filling it with water, freezing it, thawing it, and rinsing it out. Taste is now gone. I suppose you could complain about this, but I liken it to a cast iron skillet: if you put in a little effort to season it all of a sudden it's in a league of its own for versatility, functionality, and performance. On to the Stow: I love it. From biking to hiking, on the weekends I'm trying to rack up some miles and weight matters. The double-walled stainless steel bottle I keep on my desk (or in the car for cold water apres adventure) doesn't cut it on the trail. The Stow is insanely lightweight, has never leaked in my pack, and the best part is it shrinks down as I drink the water in it down. This means there's no half-filled bottle sloshing around in my pack. And when it's gone, it compresses to the size of a golf ball. I usually bring it with me everywhere whether I'm using it or not. Takes up no space, and weighs nothing. Deploy when needed. Sure, it's a bit weird to handle when you're used to a rigid bottle, but you'll get over that and appreciate for all the thing it is vs. what it isn't.

Consistently Leaks

I took this on four or five ski tours. It leaked every time. I sort of thought I might not be screwing the top on right or sealing it properly. But the last time out I made absolutely sure and it soaked out my down coat and pooled water in the bottom of my bag. The leaking makes this bottle worse than useless. It's a poorer situation having it my bag than not.

Great Bottle, very durable

My wife and I used two of the one litre bottles extensively in our 28 day tour of Italy last June. We used these every day, adding flavored packets to water and draining them several times a day while hiking, riding buses, trains and ferries. These bottles are robust, did not impart objectionable tastes or odors and were able to withstand impacts and drops, including a pretty long drop when on the Path of the Gods. I have noticed some darkening, not sure if it is from friction internally or externally, but love them and will be buying more

Local and worldwide

I have used this one so many times I can't recall. World travel (Europe, Mexico, Canada), domestic all over the US, backcountry - fly fishing, hiking, backpacking, skiing. I have not had a leak, love how it compresses, fits great in side pockets, and when skiing it fits in my jacket pocket and because it is soft I don't worry about hurting my ribs if I fall on it. I have used Nuun tabs in it and found that if I use the BottleBrite cleaner from HydraPak it clean it out no problem!! Simply love this item for how versatile it is.

Put me in the bad taste camp

I got this bottle and a smaller one for a trip where I was worried about not having inexpensive and accessible water. I washed them at home and then brought them along and filled one at the airport. The water was awful. I tried to use them again during the trip and again the water tasted awful. So I lugged them all over Europe and back with the intention of returning them, but then lost track of time. It's been over a year and I may just offer them to the homeless we see standing on the corners begging here as I can't use them.

Just got it!

I ordered this for my husband who needs to keep a water bottle in his pocket. Loved it upon arrival. It’s a thick material that is bendy and almost a little stretchy. The water nozzle makes it so if you hang the water upside down, nothing comes down. Also, if your water level is, let’s say half, you can still suck on the nozzle and water will go into your mouth (I’m sure there was a more eloquent way of saying that hahaha). We will report back but so far so good! Considering getting one for myself.
