Metolius Wood Grips with customized texture grip
I love the Metolius Wood Grips II Climbing Board that I purchased this summer in Denver. I installed in a high doorway opening to our kitchen. I didn't want the synthetic colorful style, so I purchased the wooden version. My plan was to stain, varnish and add texture to the piece so it would look more natural in the room. It looks and works great. See the pictures.

Good hangboard, but not sturdy
I bought this hangboard back in July as a way to keep my fingers strong during the gym closures. The texture was decent, and as a beginner to hangboarding the holds worked well. However, I use the top jugs for warming up, as well as doing pull-ups; in the past month I've felt a bit of flex on the right jug, and I noticed the wood is now beginning to split. For being less than a year old, I'm incredibly disappointed. While mine may have been a lemon, in the future I'll opt for a different brand.

Great entry hangboard to get your training on!

A simple and well laid-out hangboard featuring a pair of jugs, somewhat-slippery slopers, generous crimps, decent crimps, and an assortment of 2-4 finger slots. As advertised, the Wood Grips II is definitely more of an entry/intermediate board for getting basic finger strength and/or stamina training. Per instructions and various online guides, the Wood Grips II installed without a hitch using a 3/4" plywood backboard (not included), screwed into 2 king studs to the left/right of a door frame. I opted for beefier #10 torx screws (2.5" for backboard, 3" for hangboard itself) over the included drywall #8s.

Basic Hang Board for the Basic Climber

The hang board comes with several holds with varying degrees of difficulty. I have started with the middle side holds to improve my finger and shoulder strength. I choose this specific board because I did not want to use a plastic board because it seems they give you extra grip. If you are looking for a beginner board than I would recommend this board wholeheartedly.

Junk screws come with unit

Just installed this practice grip board. Utility of board itself is TBD, but the screws it comes with are cheap, low-quality pieces of junk; they immediately stripped when using a regular drill driver and no great force. Metolius should invest in better screws--at little cost to their bottom line (and to avoid mediocre reviews like thus one). Advise that users toss the screws that come with the grip and use standard coated exterior deck screws from any decent hardware store; such screws can take quite a beating and won't easily strip. Not considering such a basic factor in a grip like this doesn't speak well of Metolius's end-use testing or quality. (Incidentally, this unit also had an erroneous extra hole that the firm had patched over with a dowel; no biggie, but another indicator of less than ideal workmanship/quality.)

Holds become very slippery after light use

Good looking and easy to mount, but holds become very slippery very quickly and cleaning doesn't help. Like climbing in a very polished limestone crag. Not fun.
