Fantastically Sharp
Holds its edge very well. I have sharpened it but only after 3 camping trips. It is so sharp now it could be used in a barbershop!
Save your money unless you love "rustic" tools
I've had my SAW hand-forged Swedish hatchet for 30 years. I bought the Tarnaby so I could add something similar to a separate set of gear. I'm giving this hatchet 2 stars because the charm of this class of hatchet is undeniable. My assessment runs downhill from there. The leather of the sheath is second or third rate. The brass rivets came pre-oxidized blue-green. The finish of the hickory handle is -- well, I wouldn't actually call it finished. The edge looks like it was honed by an inebriated kindergartener. I'm returning this and buying a Gerber or Fiskar (same hatchet -- different handle color) which is still Scandanavian forged steel but benefits from modern machining and a composite handle.
Great hatchet for the price
This hatchet is fantastic. The negative reviews on this product are a bit nit-picky. Who cares if the sheath isn’t luxurious? So the factory grind is a bit rough, does it stop the hatchet from chopping and splitting? No. At the end of the day Hults is offering a pared down more affordable option than their other hatchets and camp axes. For folks who want a balanced, no frills, incredibly sharp hatchet that keeps an edge for ages, this might just be your buy. If you want something more ornate or specialized then keep searching.
Not worth it
The first one I received was cracked apart at the top of the helve that I decided to exchange for another. The second one had a handle that looked better at first, but needed a serious reprofiling of the bit. After spending a lot more effort than I anticipated straightening out the VERY lumpy, crooked, and poorly profiled bit, I was then able to notice that the head was hung slightly crooked on the handle. I returned the first one, but I'm stuck with the second one now that I've sharpened and reshaped it. All this effort and initial cost outlay for a slightly crooked hatchet is a bit ridiculous. When I find time and after I get out of my funk over this, I may try to remove the handle, fix it, and re-hang the head, or even replace the handle altogether. In the meantime, I ordered a Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet from another source. For folks who are looking for a nice Swedish axe, I can't recommend this one. Did I get two that were made on a Monday? I don't know. I'm hoping that Gransfors Bruk is still living up to their esteemed reputation. Sorry folks. Hults Bruk seems to be on a different program now.
Hults Bruk Tarnaby Hatchet
Wonderfully made. Effortless and natural transition from lower grip position to top. Great for car camping trips and small jobs.
Great hatchet!
Very well made, an excellent tool for working around the yard, at when camping. Well worth the money!
