These are my first ever pair of hiking boots and I am very happy with them so far! I am an experienced hiker - my 2020 New Year's Resolution was to do at least 1 hike every week this year and so far I'm 40/52 and still on track. I was initially attracted to these boots for the color scheme but they have also been great on the hikes so far! I used to just wear Nike running shoes while hiking and I'm so happy I finally invested in some good boots. They didn't take long to break in and have been very comfortable with no blisters - my most recent hike was 7 miles and my feet felt great at the end! Definitely a very happy customer :)
These are the most comfortable hiking boots I think I've ever owned. However, the tread literally tears off, especially the front. Those parts that don't tear off wear down fairly quickly. I hike a lot and easily go through two pairs/hiking season, simply because of the tread. The problem is I have some foot issues and nothing else I've tried is this comfortable. I guess I've just accepted I'm going to have to keep forking out the $$s every year and hope they'll improve the tread or I someday find another boot that fits as well. I've returned a couple to REI in the past (hoping it was just an anomaly) but same thing happens with every pair, and I don't feel right returning them over and over.
The Keen Targhee's provide the comfort you expect from a lightweight boot but have the durability, stability and traction of a much heavier boot. The toe box is roomy, and the footbed and arch keep your feet snug. I like the mid-height because there is no pressure on the achilles. The mesh construction keeps your feet cool and dry. The Keen's are by far the best boot I have had. The price is at about the midpoint of the 3 other major brand boots I have had over the years. I am a day hiker around 5-6 miles on easy to moderate/difficult trails with less than 2,000 ft elevation gains. These boots take me over desert landscape including hardpack dirt & clay, loose gravel & rocks with ease and are nimble over changing terrain. Comfort, Durability and Price all in one good looking boot.
I love these boots, so comfortable right out of the box. I just ordered another pair, this will be my 3rd pair of Keen Targhee Vent. My only complaint is the sole. It does not last! The boots are lasting me about 1 year before the soles start to fall apart - I hike 2 to 3 days per week. The boot itself holds up beautifully but having to replace boots every year is extremely expensive and at this price they should last more than one year. I used to wear Merrill boots. I found the soles (Vibram) on the Merrill's would last for years but the boot itself would come apart at the seams. I found the toe bed on Keen's to fit my feet better, even my podiatrist said he loves Keen's. If Keen would pair their boots with a Vibram sole they would have a hands down 5 star winner!
These boots felt wonderful right from the beginning. I have arthritis in my feet and ankles and these boots let me walk with no or minimal pain. Very comfortable and supportive, yet light and breathable. Nice wide area for toes - no crowding. I bought 1 size larger than my usual shoe size for comfort and to accommodate hiking socks. I'll be wearing them in Zion and Bryce Canyon, Utah in June. Purchased in the Madison, Wisconsin REI store - sales staff were very helpful.
I love Keens. They are the only boots I've ever worn (successfully) in my 5 year hiking career. However, having retired my second pair after wearing them out I have replaced them with this boot and find that it is running shorter than my previous 2 pair. Everything is great as always...straight out of the box flexible, no rubbing, etc. But this pair had my toes screaming and a couple of black nail at the end of their first long, multi day hike. I'm in despair. The next size up is way too big so Im not sure what to do.
The boots are comfortable, needing no break-in, but I have found the soles to be a real problem on slippery talus/scree/gravel. My husband has the same boot and tested it on a slippery slope compared to a Vibram soled shoe (no longer available). He agreed that the Keen sole is more slippery, vindicating my unhappiness with the boot. The boot is OK for well-maintained trails, but not off-trail use.
I needed move up a 1/2 size from my previous pair of Keens for toespace for backpacking. Only had 2 weeks to break them in and they felt great for the entire 25 miles and 32 pounds. No moleskin or blister care required. Wide foot and high arch. Keen never lets me down.
I have been a huge fan of Keens and owned many pairs. They fit better than any other brand, but the quality had really deteriorated and I will not buy them again. I threw my last 2 pairs out even though they did not have much use. On the Targhee Vent Mid a flap of rubber peeled off the very thin sole under the foot ball. On my Targhee II Low boots a rock tore a 2 inch slash in the nubuck on the side of the shoe.
I got this for my trip to Moab, Utah. We were mostly hiking in the desert with more rocky terrains and this boot worked great with that. My feet also didn't get too hot in them either. After 5 days of hiking my feet are not sore and I don't have any blisters. Highly recommend.
