LOVE THIS PACK! Just finished an 8-day trek doing the O Circuit in Patagonia, and this baby fit everything. It packs much more like a 45L. The main compartment fit my sleeping bag, pad, tent's rain cover and stakes (husband carried mesh tent and poles), Jet Boil, camp mug, food, travel towel, travel daypack. Lid/brain had my med kit, toiletry kit, headlamp, knee brace, and the underside carried the pack's rain cover, my rain coat, and a beanie. Front zip pocket had my camp clothes and one extra leggings/tank and socks/underwear in a vacuum-esque bag. And the pouch between the front pocket and main bag held rain pants and extra ziplock bags. Hip belt pockets ARE small, but fit my old iPhone SE (same size as a 5 or 6), chap stick, foldable sunglasses, sunscreen, insect balm, and a few small snacks. I utilized loops on the exterior for camp sandals and my puffy in it's foldable pocket. After a couple days of eating food though, everything fit inside the pack. Total weight with food and water was 28lbs, and felt fine, well distributed. Things I liked: - beautiful - even with the bright yellow color, didn't get very stained - rain cover is brilliant! has loops for the hip belt and an elastic band for the top, so it didn't blow away in the patagonian winds like some other rain covers i saw - spacious for it's size - whistle on chest buckle - water bottle pockets accommodated both a full size Nalgene, and a slimmer Smart Water bottle (has a little snap to make the pocket more snug to hold slimmer bottles) - can access water bottles by myself, and don't need help getting them back in while pack is on! due to forward location and angling forward as well. - even fully packed, fit as carry on for both domestic and international flights Things I didn't like: - straps DO brush your neck, but only when empty. When full, and even at the end of the trek when it only weighed 17lbs after my food was gone, the straps laid perfectly on the shoulders and not against my neck - hip belt pockets could be bigger but it wasn't a deal breaker - lid/brain is a bit smaller than I'm used to - lid/brain does not detach to make a day pack like on the bigger Traverse models All in all, my new favorite pack!
The gold color is beautiful - not too obnoxious. The straps are padded and with a heavy enough pack you can feel it help your shoulders! This pack offers so many options to place tools for ascents and I even customized it to fit my snowshoes once. One con - the side pockets are cut too low and if I have a water bottle in it and bend over it falls out. Kind of sucks I can’t stash my hat or gloves in the side pockets for fear they may fall out too. Other than that this pack is great!
I am giving this 4 stars because it really is a great pack with LOADS of features, is a great looking pack (I bought the wasabi color because it was 50% off), but it is 1 lb heavier than my REI Flash 58. I bought it after being fitted at the Northridge, CA store. Technically it fit by looking at the straps, the angle of the load straps, the fit of the shoulder straps, etc..., but it just wasn't quite right for my 15" torso-the S/M size is rated for a 16"-18" torso and that was the smallest made in this pack. The frame brushed the back of my neck when I moved around a lot and I knew this would be enough to distract me from my hiking.
The Traverse 35 Pack features impressed me from first use forward. The back panel ventilation, padded belt, built-in rain cover, and tool loops--not typically featured in most daypacks--make it work like my favorite full backpacks, but the volume makes it a fantastic fit for dayhikes (or possibly even a warm weather overnight). The new REI Uplift technology made it easy to adjust the weight on my back, but my favorite feature might be the simplest: Easily accessible water bottle pockets, deep enough to hold bottles securely in place but also ergonomically designed to make it easy to grab my own bottle without removing my pack or asking a hiking buddy to grab it for me! Of course, it has the extra green bonus of using recycled material, too!
I bought this pack because I have another REI pack that is much larger and want to become more of a minimalist. The color is so beautiful although the burgundy is a bit darker than shown in the picture and is more of the cacao color described. I haven't taken this pack out yet but have tried it with weight and all the weight goes comfortably on my hips. Other advantages of this pack are the uplift technology, whistle & the ability to use the hydration reservoir tube on the right or left side depending on the person. I also enjoy that even at 37 liters it has room to put your trekking poles. It feels much lighter than 3 lbs as well. While I do have a bigger pack I like this one so much that I am hoping to fit all I need in it for most trips.
I bought this pack in anticipation of a hike on the Camino and I just did my final packing. Everything fits and I think it will be the correct size for a carry-on. I have been really comfortable using this pack for long hikes (20 mile, 26 mile, some shorter hikes too) in the Alabama heat. Love the ventilation panel in the back and love how the strongest part of me takes the heaviest part of the pack. I am really optimistic that this pack will be great for 40 days of hiking in Spain!!
I'm 4'10" and 105 lbs. I've used this pack on three backpacking trips now, each trip being 2 nights of camping and 2 days of actual hiking/backpacking. It is so comfy and nothing pushes on me weird or anything. I absolutely love it (though I wish the front zipper wasn't a side zipper). The only thing that failed me was that the chest strap actually popped off the strap railing so I'll be returning it -- to get the same pack. :) It's been so amazing these last few trips and I can't imagine getting a different one unless it weighs less haha.
I am recently getting more serious about hiking and wanted to finally get a bag that helped me prepare for the trails. This bag is amazing. For me, the biggest selling point is the pockets along the bottom buckle that fall on either hip. I am never hiking without my pups, and one pocket holds their (empty) waste bags and the other holds treats. Amazing! The bag itself is also great, with tons of storage for safety gear, food and water, and extra clothing. I am a day hiker (at least for now) and do not know if I could pack for more than that in this bag, but a lot of the room is for my dogs' water bottles, too. Also, an added bonus to this bag are the hooks to clip extras on the outside. I have a whistle/compass and my dogs' pop-up water dish clipped to the outside. I got the gold color and I love it, but it will get dirty. It is comfortable and perfect for my needs. Frankly, it's almost like it was designed for me.
Years ago a bought a Traverse day pack and love it. I went back to REI to get a backpack with the same features and fit but they didn’t sell it. Well suddenly here is the Traverse in the size I need for overnight-3 nights. I could probably do longer trips too if I cut back on other things I’m carrying. So comfortable. I love the water bottle pockets, they are actually useable by yourself while the pack remains on your back. And the Uplift system holds the weight close to my back and higher so it’s not drooping onto my butt. My partner has the men’s version and he loves it too. I now use this pack for snowshoeing, skiing, and backpacking. I still have my 20L for day hikes.
Comfortable backpack with opportunity to adjust for height and waist size. The rain cover and top pocket are convenient; and the rain cover came in handy for other purposes. There is a good amount of room in the bag as well. The pack comes with the usual basics: side compartments, cushioned straps, and hydration pocket. My only criticism is the durability of the fabric -- already caught a couple snags from the shrubs and rocks. Half glass full is that it gives the pack some character?
