Pretty good
Cooked the Mexican Quinoa Bowl per the instructions for 15 min. at sea level. It was just the right amount of time. The texture of the food is nice. The flavor is good and was esp. good inside a small tortilla. The amount is good and is very filling. I wouldn't want to eat this frequently but it's nice variety to add to a backpacking trip. It is not spicy (hot) at all.
One tasty meal.
Of the Good To Go meals, this might have bumped Indian Korma from my top three. I've reviewed a few of these and they all get five stars for health, serving size, bag quality and weight. They do like boiling water and have a relatively long rehydration time, but I find they're worth the wait. For those who feel the seasoning doesn't mix, I always stir when I first pour and then gently squeeze the bag a few times while it hydrates to mix it up. This is REALLY flavorful. Not particularly spicy, the ancho chile flavor is very pleasing and you taste each of the other ingredients. I find the Good To Go vegetables rehydrate really well – it's nice to eat something that doesn't taste or feel instant. Good quinoa:veggie ratio. Generally the serving size works well for me, but I could have kept eating this one. That said, it would be an easy dish to add to with chicken, greens, tortillas, etc. I might actually choose this for a savory breakfast along with an egg.
Pretty tasty and very filling!
Overall I liked this meal. It was very filling, which is sometimes hard to find in vegan camping meals. It was easy to rehydrate and didn't take an overly long amount of time like some meals do (I let it sit for ~15 minutes which was plenty). I decided to add some avocado but next time I'll definitely be adding jalepenos/hot sauce too (it isn't at all spicy, more of a mole sauce). While it definitely isn't a 5-star camping meal, it's great for what it is. I will definitely add it to my rotation and eat it again. My only complaint is that the package says to "add a little less than 2 cups of water" which I thought I did, but it was still a bit too much. So I would recommend adding a little less than what you would think of as "a little less".
My favorite of the Good To Go meals!
I absolutely adored the flavors in this meal! It would be super tasty in as a burrito filling. As with all the Good To Go meals, we felt it didn't quite get fully cooked - you got some crunchy bits. It could be because it was very cold where we were. The flavors were fantastic though and it was plenty for 2 people!
Great Meal if you like Mole
I enjoyed this meal, and found it very filling - I didn't even finish the single serving. I thought the flavor was great! I didn't think this meal was very spicy, and I did add some salt. I've seen in other review that some didn't like the flavor; I think the determining flavor factor is whether or not you enjoy mole sauce, as that is the overwhelming taste.
Great Meal!
My wife purchased a few of the Good TO-GO meals as a Christmas present for my hiking/backpacking trips. I so far have absolutely loved these meals. The taste has been spot on, and defiantly a nice change over the other freeze dried brands that are out there, as they are way lower in sodium. I defiantly would recommend that you try these out. They only thing I would say that is a downside is the re-hydration time. Most of these meals are 15-20 minutes to fully re-hydrate using boiling water, so if your in a time crunch this can be an issue. The other thing I would note is that some of the flavors are different than what you might be use to, I didn't find them bad, just different. Last thing would be shelf life, the use by dates are alot shorter than a freeze dried option, so one other thing to keep in mind, otherwise a great meal on the trail! Get out there, you won't be disappointed!
Great Flavor
Great flavor, Not too spicy. It didn't need anything added, except maybe a little more water. I would recommend 1/4 to 1/2 cup more water. It made plenty to share.
Delicious and subtly surprising
It's almost as if the designers of this meal got together and said, "Hey, Bob! You know what would be hilarious? What if we made a meal that was really full of fiber so that backpackers can experience a flush on the trail?!" Seriously - it was delicious. Luckily, we were not on a backpacking trip in the back country and had access to flush toilets. It gets a 4 based on: - flavor, - very filling - ease of cooking and eating, and - it's vegan I do question whether or not it's a wise choice to eat this sort of thing in the back country.
My favorite backpacking dinner!
I have loved this dish from the first time I tried it. Who knew that backpacking food can be this good? I also love how the Good to Go brand is made in the USA and doesn't have a lot of the unhealthy ingredients that the more popular brands, like Backpackers Pantry and AlpineAire and Mountain House, do. This is my favorite backpacking dinner. I have found it challenging to find backpacking dinners that are not spicy. This is especially important now that my 6 and 8 year-old are backpacking with me. I am grateful to find a tasty not spicy option.
Who Would Have Thought!!
I rolled the dice with this meal and was totally surprised. Definitely not normally a Quinoa fan, but I really enjoyed this meal. I like that it was gluten free which felt like it just made digestion easier on my body after a long day of backpacking on the AT. I do recommend you the two person serving if you're hiking long distances and the one person for car camping. Also, use a long spoon (see photo for gaging). Your hand will thank me. :-) step out your comfort zone and try this puppy! Happy Trails
