Functionally superb for camping/hiking. I bought the french press and set it up before I go to bed. I can lite it and have coffee in 90 seconds before I get out of my hammock. The vessel only big enough to hold the small fuel can. The stand works great and keeps the stove level, but it is top-heavy when full of water. I've had mine on over a dozen trips, probably started it 50 times and the starter works great. The only problem has been the little metal key that turns/controls the flame comes off. Easy to clean up. This one doesn't simmer; it's either boil or off. I'd consider this an essential for everyone but the most serious minimalist.
An amazing little product that does what it's supposed to. After doing lots of research on mini stoves, I decided on this one. It's the perfect thing to take along on a trek, when you can't haul complicated gear & food. Just heat the water & pour it into your oatmeal, soup, dehydrated meals, etc. It makes such a difference to have a bit of something warm after a long day at the trail -- and within seconds! -- versus having to try to build a fire. Do keep in mind that you can't simmer with this.. it's basically hot or not. But that didn't bother me. My one wish is that it took a little less space, perhaps collapsible, but I would not exchange it.
I had used the old jetboil cooking system a few times when backpacking with friends that owned them. Having used many different cooking systems, including the whisper light stoves, the Jetboil Flash is above and beyond the best personal cooking system I have ever used. It's perfect to toss in your pack for whatever kind of trip you're doing. Whether it's for a night hike to boil up some hot cocoa at the summit, or for quickly boiling up some pasta for a meal, the Jetboil Flash does it all. I would never go anywhere without it on camping, hiking or backpacking adventures. Easy, fast, effective--I would recommend this for anyone.
After reading all of the reviews I had high expectations of the Jetboil when I bought it. I finally got to use it on a weekend backpacking trip to Fossil Creek, Az and I couldn't be happier. My wife became a huge fan of it on that trip and now wants one for herself. For you java lovers, I highly recommend getting the coffee press. A very nice comfort to bring on trips like this. BTW - It started up like a champ every time. One more thing, there is some truth to the difficulty in adjusting the flame level. I have two points to make on that subject. 1) most of the adjustment is in the first 1/4 turn. After that, its Jetboiling. 2) who cares? we are boiling water right ;) Buy it.
I purchased my JetBoil Flash just before an overnight snowshoeing trip to Zimmerman Lake, near Cameron Pass in Northern Colorado. After my purchase, I found some stories that the upright canister stoves didn't work that well at altitude or in the cold, so we packed up and extra white gas stove just in case. We didn't need the white gas stove. The JetBoil Flash worked great and even at 10,500 feet and 20F, melted snow and boiled the water in about 4 minutes total. Excellent companion for backpacking meals and hot chocolate trips. Light, compact, easy to set up... it's an all-around great stove. I was even able to bring down the temperature of the stove after the water was boiling and keep it just on the edge of boiling while someone else was preparing their meal. Only one suggestion for using this stove in the cold... sleep with your canisters in your sleeping bag or store them inside an inner layer of your clothing. If you do that, you'll be golden.
I bought this for my self-supported bicycle tour of the Adirondacks. I also bought the coffee press attachment. The whole thing including the coffee press stores into a small cylindrical shape that easily fit into my panniers. I used it to boil water to reconstitute dried meals and for coffee. It worked flawlessly. When I was finished using it, it cooled quickly so that I could put it away between uses to avoid losing parts. It is well made, although you should exercise some care when using the plastic parts. That isn't enough of an issue for me to rate it less that "Excellent".
Originally purchased a Jetboil Sol, which was a bit disappointing...the lid wouldn't stay on in my pack and the sleeve was too loose. Traded it in for the Flash, which I think is much better, plus holds a little more fluid. The sleeve on the Flash seems a little thicker and sturdier, and the lid is heavier grade than the lid on the Sol. The lid on the Flash fits on snugly and hasn't fallen off in my pack like the SOl lid did. It's a bit heavier than the SOl, but in my opinion, quite a bit higher quality and worth the extra weight. Plus it's about $20 cheaper!
For my 14th birthday, asked my dad for the JetBoil Flash cooking system because of its great reviews and performance. Once I got it, I grabbed my coat and took it outside to make a cup of tea. The set up was very simple. I put in the two cups of water which was the maximum amount and fired it up. I was surprised when in less than a minute and thirty seconds I had a roaring boil. As I eagerly await for the weather to warm up, I know when the time comes I will be able To have a hot camp breakfast fast and get back on the trail!
I give the product 5 stars, it works great, this is the 3rd one I've bought, 1st one from REI. I recommend buying from somewhere else. The pics I attached show how the product was received. I was inside a pristine outer box, so this isn't shipping damage, somebody at REI saw this and decided it was OK to send. I was going to give this as a gift, can't really do that now. The product inside is fine, no damage, so I'll keep it as a spare, and buy the gift from a better vendor.
This is a powerful stove that boils water fast. However, no one wants carcinogens leaching into their boiled water, right? I could find no info on the plastic lid that covers the pot, and jetboil did not respond to my inqiries about whether the lid contains BPA. I have never used a plastic lid on a cooking pot, so this would be good info to have. When I do use the plastic lid I notice a strong plastic odor, and that gives me pause. Also - the ignitor only works about half the time. My friend has an older jetboil and the ignitor has never failed. I would like to see a lightweight metal lid for the pot and a reliable ignitor before I'd recommend this to anyone.
