Outlaw-X an improvement over the original Outlaw
I replaced my 22 Designs Outlaw bindings with the Outlaw-X, and it was worth the money. The -X addressed my original complaint that the Outlaw was difficult to step into on soft snow, say when on top of a windy ridge after stripping skins. The -X has a simpler construction, and is therefore lighter. As far as I can tell part-way through the season, the -X skiing performance is indistinguishable from the original. The engineers at 22 Designs have a better design here. The adage appears to be true for the original Outlaw: Never buy version 1.0 of anything.
Good - but not appropriate for wide skis (for me)
Good binding - the obvious choice for this style of telemark boot. My only gripe with these is the overhang on the metal part of the toe. When I used these with wide skis at first (108 mm at waist), I kept getting the other ski caught in the overhang between the binding and the wide ski. I've been tele'ing for a long time (38 years) after downhill skiing since 1962 and ski in a tight formation. In ~6 days at the ski area, this must have happened dozens of times, mostly leading to throwing me off of balance and a fall. I finally got fed up and returned the skis to REI and got a pair that are 88 mm at the waist. On the narrower skis, this problem only happens a couple of times a day and has not yet led to a fall as the skis are not as tightly locked. I wish 22Designs would extend the plastic from the front around each side of the binding, below the hex bolt. This would solve it's problem with wide skis AND decrease the contact of the other ski's edges with the metal toe piece.
NTN Forever
Amazing action! I will never go back to the old telemark binding
THESE BINDINGS ARE UNSAFE
The NTN second heel assembly fails every time. it leads to spontaneous pre-release. Which happened countless times to me, while skiing fast, it fell off my foot on the chairlift. culminating in a near death experience from a pre release. 22 Designs wont stand behind their product. They know there is a fatal design flaw and are not trying to fix it. DONT BUY THESE BINDINGS
this binding is NOT SAFE
This binding has a major design flaw and will fail every time. hopefully your not going fast when this happens The block in front of the orange plastic step in device will slide backwards on the round bars and your boot will loose tension and fall out. its only a matter of time
The binding broke / failed
After 2 1/2 season averaging about 20 days per season, one of the bindings had a catastrophic failure. The metal broke in half when I took a turn on my first day this season. I have really enjoyed the way the bindings ski. Besides this incident they have been good equipment.
