Great Tool!
I took my family on a beach camping trip to Second Beach on the Olympic Peninsula. It's less than a mile to walk in to the beach, so there are plenty of other campers, meaning finding decent, usable driftwood for a fire is next to impossible. Knowing this was going to be an issue, I purchased the Silky F180 with the intention of being able to cut some usable lengths of otherwise hard to manage downed branches and driftwood. My wife rolled her eyes at the purchase, but by the end of day 1 she was using this thing with a smile! It flat out works, cutting through 3 - 4 inch diameter branches without undue effort. It really made our campfire much easier to create and keep going by having lengths of dry-ish wood that would fit in the pit and were not wet from saltwater. This thing is a bargain and a quality tool.
Great for tree branches 3" or less
After receiving the saw, I took it out on a one-night camping trip. In the area where I camped, there were a number of ponderosa pine trees with dead lower limbs. Some of these limbs were up to 3" in diameter and were very dry. The saw cut through these limbs as if they were made of butter. This little saw even sailed through knots in the limbs. The saw is fairly small and light and doesn't take up too much room in the pack. I wouldn't try to do any heavy-duty cutting with it because the blade is fairly thin, but for campsite chores, it works as advertised. Well worth the money I think.
Impressive Performance
I often hike on trails that don't get much official maintenance, so I like to do light cleanup when I can. On my first hike after receiving this item, I came upon a tree fallen across the trail with two, 3" branches sticking up into the area where people would want to step across. I pulled this out and was amazed by how quickly it cut through those branches. The whole job was done in around a minute. The saw is light enough to keep in my pack from now on, and efficient enough that I won't hesitate to use it when a few small cuts can make the trail more passable.
Sturdy and sharp
I bought this saw last year (the next level up) prior to a backpacking weekend with friends. It is sturdy and sharp and fast, making quick and easy work of cutting firewood. Every time I went backpacking my fellow campers used it and were very impressed with how easy it cut! This year I bought one for my nephew and will likely purchase a few more as Christmas gifts. It's now a must have for backpacking and camping!
Must have for firewood
Love this, my buddies have some larger Silky saw's including the 210 and even one that is 3XX in length, the longer lengths are still relatively light; however, this one is perfect. I've used it from small branches up to logs almost the size of the blade. If you're looking for your weekend (or longer) hiking excursions, look no further.
Great for the occaisional small blow-down
Or for processing fire wood at camp. It cuts on the draw, so don't bear down on the push. Sharp, oh man, watch out for those teeth. I have rubber band around the end to keep it closed in the pack, 'cause if it opened accidentally.... damage for sure. I said small, but could handle up to 8" diameter, pine much quicker than a hardwood.
Cuts firewood fast.
We have used this saw on a few backpacking trips and it’s been great. Folds up to a convenient size and doesn’t add much weight.
It's A Saw
First off, if you break this saw, it's entirely a skill issue. You don't cut on the push, you cut on the pull. Trying to push cut with this will put undue stress on the blade. Replacement blades can be found on silky's website. I've owned this saw for years now and never once even come close to breaking the blade. With that said, this saw does what a saw should do. It cuts wood. As a bonus, it's lightweight and compact. When I'm working around camp I'll even just slip it into the cargo pocket on my pants and hardly notice it. You're gonna have trouble trying to saw through a whole downed tree, but some downed limbs and boughs will be light work. No more half charred logs being slowly pushed into the fire, no more all kindling no fuel fires. One time while driving down a logging road, a small tree had fallen over the road out. With the saw I was able to cut a truck size gap in the tree (the whole thing would have been too heavy to move by myself) and get home in time for dinner. This thing rocks.
Handy piece of gear
I bought this baby Silky after the state Forest Service supplied bigger versions to our backcountry trail maintenance crew, replacing a saw that was better suited for gardening. Silky's high quality steel and secure lock-back mechanism makes for a formidable little blade. I carry this little guy for processing firewood for moderate-distance backpacking, but would not carry the weight for longer-distance or fast-paced trips.
Backwoods hand saw
I tried this out last weekend and it cut through maple wood like butter.
