Makes trail maintenance 'easy'
I've had mine for two years now, and use it primarily for trail maintenance. I've cut close to 100 trees/branches and the teeth are still fairly sharp. The largest tree so far was 16 -18" diameter (was a 'good' upper extremity workout). I would strongly encourage all hikers/backpackers to get one of these things and get out there, especially in the spring, to clear some trail. A lot of us doing a little bit, takes the burden off of the few of "them" doing most of it. The smaller, and lighter, Silky F180 works great for cutting Slide Alder and Vine Maple that forever encroaches the trail. It's so light there's no reason to not carry it any time. Both of these saws have suffered serious use and are holding together fantastically.
Easy to carry and great for clearing the trails
I use this primarily clearing windfalls on our local hiking/MTB trails. The largest one to date was a little over 16 in dia and took about 45 minutes to cut. Wish I could add up photos with this review. Would have gone a lot faster with a Katanaboy but the Bigboy 2000 was what I had on my pack.
Unmatched cutting speed
Silky saws cut SO FAST. **But remember it cuts on the pull only** Had a Silky Super Accel 210 and loved it, gave it to my brother. This is slightly heavier but you can cut much bigger logs. I've used it to clear forest roads with trees fallen across them. It could handle a 12" tree very easily. I intend to keep this one in my truck and get a smaller one for backpacking. You could easily keep a bow saw in the truck, but then you'd not be able to take it backpacking. When I've taken either saw backpacking, I wrap it in a piece of Tyvek and a rubber band because the 90* spine of blade is thin, and while not sharp per se, I don't want it against my pack or jacket.
Works as described.
Bought this to help gather fire wood while backpack camping. Works great and quickly. Recommend getting a pair of leather work gloves. Very sharp and cuts 3 inch branches well. Two handed use with friend holding branch is easiest method.
Solid product with minor flaw
Wanted to try a bigger hand saw for trail work. Overall it works very well, doesn’t replace a chain saw but it will do much bigger stuff than the typical small folding saw. My only gripe is it doesn’t lock closed and will drift open as there’s no resistance. Easy enough to get around with a rubber band or such but sort of unexpected for a well respected product.
Cuts Great, Blade Cannot Be Locked When Closed
This is a great cutting trail saw with a open lock but it does not have a closed lock. BAD design! The screw/nut holding the blade to the handle loosens easily and the blade will free open. Unless you happen to have a dime or a large screwdriver you will be stuck on a trail with a blade that freely opens. This is dangerous because the blades are so sharp that serious hand or leg cuts are possible. The fix I'm trying is putting a thread-lock on the screw threads and hoping this will tension it so the blade will be hard to open. I would give this five stars if the blade could be locked.
BigBoy Joy
I bought this specifically with trail work in mind. I have used it with great satisfaction on several WTA events. It cuts much larger limbs and brush than its smaller backpack counterpart. We just wrapped our snowshoe trail work schedule on Mt Spokane. The longer reach was particularly useful cutting brush below the snow deck. So far, it has maintained an excellent edge. Quicker to access/stow than the KatanaBoy.
Puts the FUN in cutting wood!
Just purchased this to help feed a fire pit, and couldn't be happier. It is easy to use, has a very smooth cutting action, is fast, and folds compactly for easy storage. Cuts everything from green wood to dried downed timber. Cutting wood used to be a chore, but this makes the task quite enjoyable. It is so easy to pack and transport that I can see it being a must-have in my emergency kit in my vehicle.
Smooth
This is my second Silky and I couldn’t be happier. Bought a Gomboy 240 about 6 months ago and have been using it to feed my fire pit with downed wood. As the tree pieces got larger, I needed an upgrade. Now I’m just counting down the days until I truly desire a Katanaboy.
Big, Bad, and Beautiful
It’s big, it’s sharp, it’s efficient. My second Silky in my lineup after the gomboy which I love. This just allows me to cut bigger things more efficiently.
