Rated 5 out of 5 by from My search is over! I am a coffee fanatic. For 20 years I have been searching for the perfect cup of joe to brew up on a cold Sierra morning. I am a minimalist and lightweight enthusiast when backpacking so carrying extra coffee presses or bulky gadgets on the trail is not ideal. I have tried every other lightweight coffee brewer there is. This one blows them all away. With a course grind, I get the flavor and body profile of French press. Surprisingly, this little guy doesn't give a ton of sediment, almost none! It brews a little smoother than a French press. I now use this at work because of how easy it is to use and clean. I recommend it without paper filter addition as the cup is so smooth and filtered without it. So excited about this. I think I may have created a mini buzz at work cause everyone who has tried it is blown away. The best part about this is: There is absolutely no taste from the silicone. I thought for sure I would be disappointed with it when it arrived but I was wrong.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Product - except for screen The filter packs down nicely, it's easy to clean, but the 3rd time I used it I broke the screen. The design allows you to pull out the screen for cleaning - but in order to get it back in place you must press down firmly - and that's how I broke the screen. If they sold replacement screens or gave you 2 or 3 three screens, the product would be much better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good pour-over This dripper works well and the silicone snaps into place up/down well. It's important to grind properly for a mesh screen and not expect it to follow the same requirements on grind that paper takes (i.e. know what you are doing). I suspect some low reviews are coming from grind mistakes rather than the screen. As mentioned by another reviewer, you will mess up the screen if you press directly on it and that's simply a design fact, so use carefully if you remove the filter. That said, you will notice that it's not possible to completely clean without removal, but it's not necessary to clean 100% every use either.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Clean and easy way to make coffee on the go. I got this to make coffee at work . I bring my own coffee because I'm not happy with the coffee at work. I use a #2 cone filter and ground coffee. Thanks to the filter clean up is a matter of dumping the filter and rinse off the dripper. It makes coffee fast . No steeping . I just pour and wait for it to drip through .

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not work without paper filter I am sure this would work great with a paper filter. However, without one the water pours straight through leaving contact time with the coffee at right around half a second. This results in a very weak brew and a lot of wasted grounds. I will be returning it, the search for a decent backcountry cup of coffee continues.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Skip it Bought this for a week long hiking trip and it made some of the worst coffee. The water drains quickly so you are left with very watery coffee. After day 3, the filter popped out of place and it was tough getting it back in position. Each day it was getting tougher to collapse properly and just became frustrating. It's light and very little grounds got through the filter at least.

how coarse or fine of a grind would make the best cup of joe without a paper filter with this item?

For best results, we recommend using between an espresso and a traditional drip grind.

Could you dump the contents of a K-Cup into the X-Brew and brew a drinkable cup of coffee (or would that just be too stupid for words)?

Asked by: CheesePlease
you answered your own question;) fresh grind will always beat the stale coffee in k-cups any day IMO. grind enough for your trip or bring a hand grinder with you and you'll have much better coffee.
