A great compact shade essential for car camping
I bought this shade to be used at group campsites. The size of the bag is ideal to throw in the back of a car much like a tent. This shade is very versatile. The added side panel allows for adjustment throughout the day. Even at night, I was able to use the frame to tie on a few lights to keep the group campfire going. With a few adults, the shade was very easily put up and broken down in a few minutes. The angle of the legs allow for a very stable base. For taller users, the height of the shade may be an issue as the awning is relatively low (i'm 5'10") and it was fine for me, but taller folks had to duck quite a bit. Overall a very solid buy.
OK, but....
I bought one of these last summer. It works as advertised; one person can set it up; and it's lightweight and easy to stow/carry. However, a couple of things you should be aware of. First, make sure you also guy it out from the center. If you don't, the cover fills with water and might collapse. Even guyed at the center you should check to make sure water isn't building up if it's raining. Secondly, the cord as supplied for guying is green and blends in with background and is difficult to see. I replaced mine with bright orange parachute cord with reflective threads. It's easy to see, especially if you have to get up in the middle of the night! Also helpful when you camp with children and have six guy cords holding the canopy in place.
Not as good as the similar REI version
I bought this to replace an REI brand shelter that looked almost identical...but the REI version was so much better. The REI version was excellent as a rain shelter, but the Kelty top seam leaks (causing a steady drip from the top pole) and, as another reviewer mentioned, if you don't stake guylines out from the middle, the tent pools on both sides (and yes the dark guylines that come with it are very very hard to see). I also appreciated that the REI version was a little lighter to carry and liked the side open carrying bag better than a top load. Plus, having the connectors stay on the horizontal poles made telling others how to set it up and break it down much easier.
Returned it after first use
Just returned the kelty discovery shade shelter after one use. The carrying bag ripped when I carried it from my car to the picnic table. The instructions (if you can call them that) left were quite vague. I think the poles and connectors could be labeled more clearly to help with setup. The pins at the end of each pole that need to be pushed in order to lock them in place were extremely difficult to use. Once I finally figured it all out, when it came to the final connection, it didn't line up correctly and I had to resort to duck tape. The one feature I like was the side wall that can be moved to either side for extra shade.
Poor quality
The shelter is easy to set up with one person. Although the directions could be a little more detailed, it’s simple enough to figure out. The shade wall easily attaches. Why two stars? The material for the top of the shade is very thin and it seems that it provides less cooling ability than other shade shelters/canopies. The material could be more opaque. My biggest complaint, however, is that after the second use, the inner bag that holds the poles has already RIPPED! For the price point, I was expecting higher quality materials.
Okay shade tent
The best thing about this tent is it comes with everything you need to use it right out of the bag. Tent stakes, tie down cords, etc. The side sun shade is really nice to have too and definitely helps its effectiveness. However, as others have said, the material isn't the strongest and the directions could have definitely been better. I caught this product on sale so it was worth the price for me but I wouldn't buy for the current price of $120
Needs stronger stitching
Pros: Easy to assemble/disassemble even by one person. Cons: Stitching on a corner of the side shade immediately ripped when moving one leg of the shelter. Minus one star for the weak stitching and another for the sheer disappointment of experiencing such a glaring weakness on first use. It makes me suspicious of the rest of the shelter fabric and how much use it will be able to take.
Inexpensive Shade
I was able to assemble and disassemble by myself. After you have put it together once, it will become easier. You can move the extra shade piece to any side of the shelter when the sun is low. Seems more robust than the pop-up style, and will hold up to some wind.
Happy shaded camper
I read many of the reviews before going ahead and purchasing the sunshade. I am a 5' 2" woman and had no problems assembling it and putting it up by myself. So far so good. Other than the poles being bright red (not that color in the picture). I guess that'll make them easier to see so they won't be tripped over.
Easy set up, not sure how well it'll hold up
Setup was easy, a lot of thought was put into making parts easy to identify and secure. The shade cloth was what sold me on the product. The downside was that there were little half inch rips in the fabric all along one seam right out of the box. By the end of the weekend, one seam ripped out to an inch long.
