Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yakima slim shady I've only had it for 2 days but so far it's pretty amazing. Installation Is very easy as is the setup. The materials feel pretty sturdy. I was worried it would not mount to the load warrior but it did. Also it is nice having it a little higher.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent price point, falls short in execution... First off, I'm a HUGE Yakima fan. I've run Yakima for 17+ years now on multiple vehicles, and currently have the new Timerline Towers, JetStream Aero bars, Loadwarrior & extension on my Forester. This setup is perfect for anything we can throw at it. I wanted to add the SlimShady as the ARB & Rhino awnings are much more expensive & require non-included brackets to mount them. With the Slim Shady, you can mount it to literally any type bar you have (round, square, aero, whatever...) right out of the box AND it comes with SKS cores...for $259 that's a great value. Overall, the setup is pretty nice, it's smaller than I would have liked, I believe it's about 5.5-6' out from the vehicle, depending on how for inboard you mount it. It's also about 6' in length. That's a great middle-point size since Yakima only makes 1 can fit more vehicles and that just makes sense. Where it starts to fall apart is the way it mounts, which unfortunately is the main reason I really got excited about this. Yes, it's dead simple to install to your rack, But the base is just too big to allow you to fully utilize the full bar real-estate and makes you jump through hoops trying to find ways to use it when other rack items are mounted. If you only have this on the rack, it will be perfect, even on factory crossbars. This is THE easiest awning on the market to install to literally any vehicle, but again, I have a lot of stuff on my rack. I will probably swap out the mount for a Rhino Racks universal mount (made for their awning but works with ARB and this one, as the mounting channel on the back somewhat 'universal' to all awning designs.). I think that will allow me to butt the awning right up against my Load Warrior, which the included mount will not allow me to do due to its size. Again, overall, I'm pretty pleased with this awning. The price is just at the top-end of 'good deal' before you get into ARB & Rhino pricing. At that point, just go with those brands. Yakima also offers a lifetime warranty, which may be a great thing to have in a year or so because the case of mine was scratched all up when I opened the box and the aluminum rail looks like it was scratched up during packing. I can't say that I love it, but I also don't hate it. I believe this is the best option for a casual user, but if you are like me, and want to use 2 JayLo kayak racks, a LoadWarrior (OR) Skybox, AND this awning, you'll have to be creative and possibly use aftermarket mounts. I would assume most people aren't like me, because most people like me buy ARB or Rhino. Only time will tell if I'll do that myself...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed While I was very excited about the price point on this product and was hopeful that Yakima (an established manufacturer) would have good quality, I was concerned with it being their first foray into the awning market. Unfortunately when I unravelled the shade it had lots of aluminum shavings in it from where the screws were drilled into the metal poles. The way some of the screws were installed also caused scratches on other metal parts of the product. It was concerning enough that I took extra time to inspect the shade. In doing so I also discovered that the mounting bar for connecting to the crossbars mounts was installed backwards. Rendering it impossible to put on the brackets without figuring out a way to disassemble it from the shade and then putting back on the correct way. At that point I decided to return it. The Yakima universal mounting brackets fit my Rhino Rack Aero bars as advertised. That was nice at least. It would be helpful if Yakima had a video on how to mount it to your vehicle as the instruction sheet wasn't particularly great in problem solving the backwards mounting problem.

Could I mount this awning to the side of my Yakima Mega Warrior roof basket with the included hardware?

Asked by: Jonjon
NO, and I wanted to do this with my mega & load warrior also. If you do, you have to use the front or rear basket bars that run side to side, as the brackets can't be adjusted to work with bars running front to back. I ended up using the extra internal spreader bar included with the basket and the rear load warror bar.  It  works OK, but the rear bar is lower so it doesn't sit flush or even. It works OK like this, but overall, I'm not 100% sold on mine. I may try the round bar ARB/Rhino mounts and see if that makes it any better, but I also run a cargo box and don't want my awning dictated by which basket/box I use. I may also use the Rhino universal bracket with mine & my JetStream aero bars, so that may make it 100% better. The stock mount needs reevaluation for sure, and I believe they will do that for the next version. Use #YakimaSlimShady on Instagram to find my pics and videos, right now I'm the only one in the US reviewing this thing.

Is the actual mounting clamp on the slim shady the same as the clamp on the yakima tents?

Asked by: Bob LaBlaw
They are similar but not the same; the orientation is different because the clamp is vertical on slim shady and on the Skyrise tents is more flat.
