Concerns about durability...

I did a lot of research before buying this hoodie, just because of the price. I was looking for something for backpacking that could be worn as an mid/outer layer when working hard in cold weather, and as part of my sleep system (featuring a quilt with no hood). The longer length, thumb holes, and hood were deciding factors in my decision to buy it, and all of those features have worked exactly as I hoped. The fit was even better than I hoped it would be. However, immediately after I began wearing it under a pack it started showing signs of wear, balling up where shoulder and hip straps rub. I still love the shirt, but I don't have high hopes for it lasting long in good condition.

Too Big!!

The r1 half zip hoodie is several inches longer (in sleeves and body) than my original (orange) r1 half zip. Some consistency would be helpful. The original r1 fit perfectly. The 2nd generation (light blue) was supersized, but manageable. The latest (royal blue) is simply stupid.

so good!

I wear this over a baselayer and it's great. The waffle knit fleece is snug around the arms and makes it a tad tricky to get on right, over a shirt. However, once on, it's not overly tight and is so comfortable at regulating temperature that I quickly forget that it's on. The smoother texture of the outer fabric layer allows for layering easily. Because it's stretch, it hugs the body keeping the torso warm . Stretch allows for great comfort layering and the thin profile helps too. If I could, I'd get a non-hooded version, but that's just being greedy.... I love full zips, and I would go for it, but the large zip makes pull over not really an issue.

Perfectly sized mid-layer

Weight/warmth ratio is seriously good. The medium fits my 6'0" 170 lbs frame perfectly. The balaclava style hood is interesting, fits under a bike helmet pretty well. A welcome addition to almost any outdoor activity that takes a little bite out of the cold. Paired with the nano puff, and I'm rocking my new favorite lightweight fall/winter backpacking/camping setup. The only downside I can think of is the price because ouch...

Great product

Great hoodie, awesome baselayer. While on the move keeps you warm and insulates well, but not going to keep the wind out. Pairs really well with my down jacket on cold windy days. I'm 6'4 180lb and went with xl. Fits perfect. With slight compression in arm and chest area.

Cross/back country skiing gear

The R1 is warmer than I expected, in a good way. I compared it to the Dynafit hoodie and the Patagonia is much softer and thicker. Both breathe really well. With both I didn't have wet areas on my back and pits after skiing. Temps were in the high 20s with a strong wind. I wore a soft shell hoodie over the R1 and wanted the shell unzipped and was able to unzip the R1. It has a very long zipper which gives plenty of ventilation. I had my eye on this hoodie for a couple of years and finally snagged it on sale. It is well made and seems very durable. The zipper when all the way up was not annoying, which was unexpected. The color (Grecian) is not my favorite but it's not bad. Love this piece of gear.

In love with this mid layer

Been wanting this for a long time. Finally pulled the trigger. I don't regret it. So warm, so lightweight, and so stylish. Can't imagine a better mid layer. Perfect cold weather running pullover too. The hood couldn't be more comfortable.

Huge fan of the R1

Lightweight, extremely warm, the vent makes it very versatile, and it's even stylish. I usually use it as a mid layer with a light wool layer underneath - with a soft-shell on top, this will keep me warm down to 30 even standing still, and down to single digits when I'm moving. On REALLY cold days, I use this as my base layer and use a down sweater/soft-shell system similarly. I have had some pilling occur around the wrists where gloves chafe and along the back-hem where I sit on it occasionally, but nothing major.

great piece of tech

Rode with an underarmour base layer and this on top plus my jacket. Very warm down to 0 F with 15 to 20 mph winds. The can barely feel the hood, no lose of motion in head turning. ( important for snowboards) Great buy.

Works in every condition

I bought this to go backpacking in RMNP. The entire 7 days I never took it off. It regulated heat in Lyons when it was 80 degrees. It worked backpacking, hiking in the 50s, sleeping in 30 degree weather. I wore it under a hard shell backpacking when it was snowing, sleeting, and hailing at the same time in 35 degree temperatures. It never failed me. If you get hot unzip it. If you get cold zip it with the hood. It did pill from the backpacking hip belt but considering all the positives I think this is a trivial problem. This thing is a workhorse. It will be a staple in any outdoor activity I ever do.
