Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nearly perfect! I hike in the regular Moabs in the summer, and we so excited to try these out for winter hikes. They're great! I love how lightweight they are, as heavy winter boots really bother my "bad knee". The sizing is the same as the regular Moab's, but I did notice that it feels like my heel slips around a little extra in these because of the soft fleece lining. I wasn't necessarily walking out of them, but I did end up getting heel pads just to ensure that they stay in place. In ice and snow I always hike in microspikes, so I can't really review how good their traction is. As usual, zero break in time for these Merrells! I took them out of the box, put 'em on, and hit the trail without issue!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE these boots! Purchased these boots a couple weeks ago and have put about 20 miles on them so far over the course of two back to back days. Hiked through both mud and snow and my feet stayed dry the entire time. I had even packed my old boots just in case the new ones started to rub my feet funny or hurt and never once did i think about pulling them out. I wore weather appropriate socks and my feet stayed warm and happy the entire time. Truly happy with these boots and looking forward to many more awesome winter hikes in them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXTRA GRIPPY TREAD, EXTRA WARMTH, SUPER COMFORT After years of searching for hiking boots and shoes with good quality and comfort, I finally the one! While buying another pair of hiking shoes, I saw this one on display, and was drawn by the "arctic' grip feature of the soles, and the thermal fleece liniing. The tongue was wide and padded, and high enough not to dig into my foot or ankle like other shoes have. I have picky feet, and have turned down lots of shoes over the years, with aches and pains here and there, and trying to compensate with different socks and insoles. After trying these on, I could not say no, even though I was already spending money on another pair of boots. "I can always return them if I change my mind." But, no "buyer's remorse" after months of wearing them. Ever since the icy cold hit in Seattle, I've walked with these boots almost everyday with my dogs on the pavement and on the trails, and I definitely feel the more sticky feel on the ground, and the warmth of my toasty feet, with the support of Thorlo and Smartwool hiking socks. So comfortable, and not heavy. So far the waterroofness works and the material is holding up fine. I can walk and walk and walk and actually enjoy the feel of my feet touching the earth. Solid ice is still slippery no matter what you wear unless you have crampons. So, don't expect these to be miracle tread. The description even says it's not a replacement for crampons. However, they are definitely a huge step up on regular hiking shoes on frosty ground. I am so happy with these, that while walking I was thinking, "I gotta send a review!" So here it is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Boot I just bought these boots and have been wearing them around the house. I can't believe how comfortable they are right out of the box. They have good arch support, too, which has been a problem for me with other boots. These boots have extra protection (some new technology) for icy conditions which is also a plus. I think they will be a great boot for winter walks and even snowshoeing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Slipped twice on first light snow fall I am disappointed to be returning these boots. I was hoping these could be worn instead of my nano spikes during milder conditions. During the first very light snow fall ( an inch or so) and single digits, I slipped twice during a quarter mile walk on concrete. I am a mum who carries my child still and I believe that I will have a false sense of security reagarding this new technology. I hope Merrill will continue to improve the engineering. It is a fantastic concept.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good boots I bought these boots on sale towards the end of winter; my other boots seemed to no longer be waterproof after 6 winters of hiking. These boots aren't as tall as my previous pair, but I am very happy with them anyway. They are warm, waterproof, comfortable, and way less expensive than other boots I've bought. I haven't tested them at low temps (1-20) yet, but I bought them large enough to accommodate thick socks if they turn out to be not as warm as I had hoped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great walking/hiking boot from the start My husband & I both bought a pair of these boots. I have bunions and often have trouble" breaking in" a new pair of shoes. These were comfortable from the start and with the insulation very warm. We are making a trip to Iceland and look forward to using our new hiking boots even more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for icy Boston parking lots & streets!! Not being a winter hiker did not prevent me from falling in love with these boots. After badly spraining an ankle on black ice at my commuter rail station last winter and then hearing about the new Vibram artic grip tech on a local TV show decided I had to get a pair. As I own several pair of "regular" Moabs knew they would be perfect for my feet and they have been PERFECT! Warm and toasty along with the added grip on ice. To clarify how this new tech works - if you are walking on a surface that is going to move underneath you (slush, snow, etc) the special Vibram artic grip doesn't really help so you are relying more on the lugs. If you are walking across ice then the artic grip soles add extra stickiness although as stated this stickiness does not replace spikes/crampons particularly when hiking. I have used them all winter and have crossed ice glazed parking lots without any issues or falls!! Now I am looking forward to warmer weather; getting back into my summer boots and hitting the trails :)

It's my first time purchasing winter hiking boots--do i need to size up for winter socks? I am usually a 5 or 5.5, and I see that the smallest size you've got is a 6.

Asked by: memory0415
We recommend ordering half a size up from your normal shoe size to make sure you have enough room for your toes and thicker socks.

Under specs, these "lightweight" boots are listed as 3 lb. 1 oz. Are they really that heavy?

Asked by: kstangl
Our weight is incorrect. These boots weigh approximately 2 lbs. per pair. Thank you for bringing this discrepancy to our attention.

Do these or will these come in wide width? Also, when I tried these on in store I felt very little traction- why were they so slippery on the concrete floor if they have "artic grip"? Really wanted to get these, but too narrow and slippery in store.

Asked by: adventureclubpdx
These winter hiking boots are not currently available in wide widths.

I am considering these boots and the Capras. On the Merrel website the description for the Moab's indicates 100g of insulation, but your description says 200.... is this correct or do they only have 100 g? It looks like the Capras do have 200g....

Going to Iceland in August. Is this boot appropriate for that time of year and can it accommodate the crampons they supply. Or would you opt for the Capra Glacier Mid WP because its above the ankle and has more insulation.
