I am normally a 7.5 and ordered an 8 like everyone recommended. I am happy I did because with socks they fit PERFECTLY. I have slightly wide feet. They are really warm and sturdy like others have mentioned. It is true that they feel kinda clunky but I believe that is because of the combo of being totally waterproof, good traction, good support and high quality. I plan to use them for snowshoeing and a trip to Iceland. Also, I live in Washington State so I could do a review after I've had them for awhile and let you know what I think. For the price, I thought they were an excellent bargain.
The title is what my wife said after a day playing in the snow. She loved that these guys are lite and comfortable. But mostly her feet stayed dry and warm in the snow.
I was in search of an "in between" winter boot. A good temperature rating for standing around and moving around, hikable, waterproof, comfortable. I bought these last month for exploring and playing with the kids in hip high snow in Tahoe. Along with wool socks my feet stayed warm for several hours, even in all of that snow. My feet started to get cold when we weren't moving around as much. I have worn them most days that I am outside since then. On ice the traction isn't fantastic, maybe a 5 out of 10. Other then that I'm really happy with these boots!
I bought these recently and have used them several times in very cold temps. I love that they fit my wide foot, and appreciate the level of support. I have used the boots mainly for snowshoeing and they have been great. I believe they are rated to 10 degrees? I took them out on a 4 degree day and my toes got cold, but I also was not moving very fast and wasn't wearing wool socks; however I decided on this pair since I rarely go out shoeing below 10 degrees anyway, so I knew what I was getting with these. Great overall boot, comfortable fit and waterproof so far!
I just used these boots for a winter camping trip on Mt. St. Helens and per usual Salomon, they were so comfortable without having to break in the boots. They were waterproof without a doubt! I took off my snowshoes around the campsite and kept sinking in, my feet stayed dry the whole time. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because they weren't warm up to 14 degrees. I had two pairs of wool socks and foot warmers on and my feet were freezing (it was probably high teens). Other than that they were amazing!
Main reason for purchasing this boot was to keep my feet warm in the cold MN winter days; I'm outside daily an average of 6-7 hours. Even with warmer socks these boots never kept my feet and toes warm. Combine that performance failure together with the overall discomfort of the boot I had to return them. The boot is very stiff and inflexible, it felt like I was wearing my downhill ski boots; except they are more comfortable. I had bruises on both lower legs above the ankles from the boot top digging in and not having any give. Terrible boot for hiking in MN.
These were toasty warm, perfect for snowshoeing, perfect height to get a good overlap between the top of the boot and bottom of my snow pants, and all around perfect for enjoying well-below freezing New England winter weather. Unfortunately, the height and stiffness of the boot around my lower calf caused severe chaffing, despite thick wool socks. I ended up exchanging them for a different pair of Salomon boots.
Excellent support. No water leakage yet. Only thing I don't care for is the height. Just a personal thung. Rubs just a bit on the calf
These boots are extremely comfortable from the get go. I also spent 3 hours standing stationary in 32F weather and my feet stayed warm the entire time!
These boots are very aggressive looking and made extremely well, just like all other Salomon products we have in our house. I ordered these online without trying on beforehand. These boots have a somewhat cushy feel but the support feels a bit lacking (I have high arches). Wasn't expecting amazing support anyways though. The boot feels very plush on the top of my foot which feels nice. The soles are awesome and can definitely take you across any kind of slippery, crunchy, wintry surface with confidence. The toe box has that hard rubber that acts like steel toe does--feels like you can kick anything or have a cement block dumped on your foot with no repercussions. Also great for "grabbing" things with your feet, which I do in my job a lot. The upper portion of the boot is surprisingly supportive--feels almost like a ski boot or hockey skate does! There is really no way for you to twist an ankle if you were to somehow slip and fall while wearing these boots...which I doubt you would, because those soles will grip onto anything. These boots run true to size. I wear a 9.5 and this leaves room for bulky socks. While I really really like these boots, I am returning them. I was hoping for a bit of flexibility in the toe box since I was intending on using them for everyday use for work (I do a lot of squatting and kneeling and need the boot to bend with my foot). I will be buying a less winterized pair of Salomon boots for my particular application.
