Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for cool weather distance hiking I can't praise the PhD tights highly enough--I wore them every day and most nights, for two weeks straight, on an autumn John Muir Trail hike. They were comfortable, breathed well when I was very sweaty, and kept me warm when it was cold. They held their fitted shape perfectly and didn't pill up at all. After a lot of wear and several washes they look and feel almost brand new (except for a hole where a dog bit me on the trail, but that's not their fault). I'd wear them every day even now I'm home if that didn't get weird after awhile. My only complaint is that they are too short to cover my ankles, but I'm pretty tall. If Smartwool could start making a Women's Tall tights I'd never need anything else. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love at first sight I love Smartwool products. I've never been disappointed or itchy. When I saw these running tights, I knew they were for me. Great fit, slimming lines, a handy pocket at the back for my car key and WOOL! I followed the sizing chart and ordered accordingly they fit perfect. If you don't know the benefits of wearing Smartwool, you're missing out on something great. I wash them on delicate cold in the machine and hang to dry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm and very comfy! Just bought these and I love them! I have had a hard time finding pants that are warm enough but these are perfect. They are also super comfy and fit the waist perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these tights, but I already tore a hole in them I wore these tights for the first time today during a trail race. Super comfortable, very warm (it was 34 degrees at the start of the race) and I love the pockets. I put my car keys in the rear zippered pocket and my phone in the side pocket. I tripped and fell during the race abscess unfortunately tore a hole in the pants. I wanted to cry...not because I was hurt, but because my new awesome tights were torn. I'll continue to wear these and eventually I'll buy a new pair. I'm 5'11", 165lbs and the large fit great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Warm Tights I love these tights, super warm and flattering. I love where the waist hits a bit high and the long legs but not bunchy. The hidden zipp pocket and butt seams are really nice. And like the side pocket that is big enough for a cell phone. I would highly recommend these

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect waistband ! Great color I wear these pants daily to stay warm in the house. The material is great for me as I tend to get sweaty in regular tights. The waistband sits just right (I bought xl and I'm 5'7 158 lbs) when I run in them. They don't fall down at all and it sits just perfectly! I bought the phd windpants first to use for outdoor cold running and mountain biking and they really work great. After buying those ($$$) I decided I wanted the regular phd pants and bought black and soon after receiving those I bought the eggplant color. So, yes I have spent a lot of money on these 3 pants and NO I don't have any regrets! Love love love. I've barely batted an eye at my other pricey workout tights. I'd recommend to anyone and already have talked a few people into buying a pair for themselves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are the best tights! Tights are well designed resulting in a comfortable, flattering fit. I wear these biking, walking and daily wear. The fabric is warm, washable and feels great. Will be purchasing this product exclusively from now on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Consider sizing up This one disappointed me, according to the size charts, I am between a small and a medium, but I know to get medium in Smartwool because they generally do run a little small. Medium tops fit me fine though, so I ordered a medium in this and boy did I miss the mark. Even to get my foot through the ankle opening, it was a struggle, they were so tight on my calves, I felt I was going to pop a seam. The rest of the way up wasn't so easy ether, I found myself grabbing at the inner thighs, trying to pull it up high enough for it to meet my crotch where it should be. The waist fits fine though, in fact it has a very comfortable waist band and higher rise that I appreciate. I just couldn't believe how tight these were for a medium, I think I would do ok in the large though. I am a cyclist so my legs are a little bulkier than some, but not by a large margin by any means. I'm also 5'8 and these were a little short on me, not drastically, but my ankle was exposed with these. The quality feels nice, I like the higher rise, and I like the pocket features, just consider sizing up if you're not really lean in the bottom area.

Do these pants have a more specified model name? What season are they meant to be used for? What's the difference in regards to the Smartwool wind pants?

Asked by: clb87
These tights do not have a more specific name. These tights are warm so they are ideal for fall, winter, and spring. The Smartwool PhD Wind Tights have wind blocking front panels while these tights do not.

Do they shrink at all when washed? I am torn between the XS and small sizes.

Asked by: Pamela
To avoid shrinking, Smartwool suggests machine washing on a gentle cycle with warm or cool water.

Do these keep you dry at all? Wondering about using these or hybrid hiker tights for Mt. St. Helens hike in late October. Need something warm but a little water and wind resistant.

Asked by: VandalScout
These tights are water resistant. They are not waterproof. If the conditions on St. Helens are favorable, they can be worn as an outer layer.
